As an Aussie and born in 1994, I grew up in the peak Wiggles era. They did an 18+ (aus drinking age) tour in Syd a few years back and toured all the local RSLs. Tickets sold out in 30 secs. Literally a bunch of grown adults a bit drunk singing ‘toot toot chugga chugga big red car’ at the top of our lungs. Iconic.

Man, even in recent footage of Anthony with all the new wiggles members, you can just see in his eyes how much fun he’s having, how much he enjoys what he does. I’m glad at least one of them has been able to stay on to instill the band’s original energy to the next generation of cast members.

The original wiggles lineup still tours occasionally, hilariously doing mostly 18+ pub shows for adults who grew up with the wiggles. Murray is also still very present in the Australian music scene, and does a lot of TV and radio and even occasionally pops up at music festivals to play guitar with popular rock and punk bands. They actually topped a countdown a few years ago that one of our very popular major radio station does where listeners vote for the best song of the year for covering a Tame Impala song. It cannot be understated how massive the wiggles were and still are in Australia, they’re basically royalty, and I think a big part of that is the fact that they all just seem to be really nice people who love music and care about kids. I think it’s that passion and sincerity that’s always kept them so beloved, in the same way we loved Steve Irwin. I’m not a patriotic person, but I’ll be patriotic about the wiggles god damnit.

Well, it was the timing of the lights that was the problem, not the maintenance of the lights themselves. Still, the accident would have been prevented with better maintenance of the ride and/or investment into a system to automatically monitor the ride and shut it down if the water level dropped too much.

Shoot, I forgot about that! What year did the accident happen again? Edit: Whoops, didn't realise it was mentioned in the video. I could have sworn it was 3rd quarter of 2016 as I remember seeing a big ride closed during that time, but I could be confusing Dreamworld with Seaworld.

Ok this aside, no disrespect to the victims, this is truly an awful tragedy but only 1 fatal accident in multiple decades is like... really good numbers compared to like, almost everything in the world. Well I work at a huge themepark. And lights is not something they care about. They rather focus on keeping the big rides up to date. And if the small ones work okeyish and are safe they see that as enough. Lights, broken speakers, needing a repaint, small disfunctions on the show elements are not something they care about.

The wiggles origin story is actually surprisingly sweet, dudes just wanted to make some good kids content. I'd always heard about the wiggles band members leaving in passing and assumed that they'd gotten laid off for being too old or something, but the fact that they performed for kids for so many years and eventually had to leave because of health issues is something I did not expect, good for them.

Jeff (purple og wiggle) has the best origin story. The others were childhood teaching students and for their final assignment did children's songs. They needed more band members and I think it was Anthony and Jeff were in a band prior. They called Jeff up and asked if he fancied a short gig, and Jeff replied sure how long do you need me for ... and that was something like 15 years he did it for.

Probably more for the parents than the kids. The Wiggles were _big_ in Aus. My Mum even reported that there were multiple times when I was a kid that she'd find herself accidentally still listening to the Wiggle's cassette tape after she'd already dropped me off at daycare. And she wasn't the only one! If there'd been no comment, the parents would have been at a loss, particularly as to what to say to their kids when their favourite band changed members!

Could this be something worth investigating like say a channel called, Blameitonjorge, or say Night Mind even? That'd be interesting and I would watch it too. I saw the Wiggles in the same era, I remember when they replaced some of the crew, I stopped watching it after that and also, I was well passed moving on then as I was a bit older anyways. I remember the songs but only one comes to mind every time I think back, Fruit Salad, Yummy Yummy. That was also a backmasking era as well, "Stairway to Heaven", "Fruit Salad" and many many more like "Another one Bites the Dust" and Ozzy's "Iron Man." I was but a wee lad back then I am a fully grown adult now exploring the AOL internet at the time what a waste of time that was, Dial up. Jeeze was it utter trash. I’m a 30 year old American and I can honestly say that I had no idea The Wiggles were THIS popular. Hell, the first time I actually sat down and watched The Wiggles on television was when I was babysitting my nieces and nephews when I was in college. They all seem like genuine dudes who just wanted to entertain kids for a living. Very admirable.

Oh good gracious. At the height of Wigglemania, their concerts were respectable-budget affairs even by the standards of adult rock concerts. They had a supporting cast of a couple dozen backup dancers, acrobats, and aerialists ... Murray was rigged to wires that lifted him up into the air during "Play Your Guitar With Murray", others flew during "Eagle Rock", and they had an entire aerial rig that supported at least 4, maybe more, acrobats above the stage. They've played Madison Square Garden and sold it out. It was a great time to be a Wiggles fan, because it was just crazy that a kids' musical group was that successful. When I moved to Australia, I got to learn that they're kind of embedded in the national consciousness because they've been around for like TWO generations of kids now, and most people think they're cool. When they had the big line-up change after the 3 originals retired, the new crew played small venues like a local shopping mall, a tiny pavilion at the state fair, and a city Apple Store to get used to performing. Their cover of a pop song actually was the number 1 voted song of the "Top 100" one year recently.

I like how kevin sounds more and more disappointed as he describes the ride. Its so funny. When he shows wags sliding down and completely cuts all the audio to show how slow hes really going, henry not moving his arms when he is told to and the saxophone playing fish moves back and forth, which kevin gives his approval by saying in a monotone voice that it is “great”, to returning to the loading area extremely slowly. I love how informative he is and how funny he is at the same time. Also that zoom on flora door looking very unsettling at the beginning was great. Keep it up kevin! Edit: lol i kept calling him patrick. My brain kept turning on and off. I didnt know i did that until i saw the replies lmao

As an Australian it's fascinating hearing you explain The Wiggles in such a methodical and external perspective. It's great. It makes sense. Can we take a moment to appreciate the, if you'll pardon my phrasing, gigachad energy of John Longhurst? Dude wanted his own theme park, he did the bulldozing his own damn self, and then he shamelessly and fearlessly ripped off Disney as much as he possibly could, arguably also improving much of it with the Australian stuff. I'm sure there's a milkshake duck twist to this guy somewhere cuz there's gotta be, but right now I'm just in sheer awe at this absolute unit.
