According to GP To Enthusiast's very interesting "What Actually Happened?" series, the wood cracked on Son of Beast when one train went over it. A second train was sent out while the first was being de- and re-loaded. When that second train went over the crack, it got worse and dropped like 5 inches, painfully jerking everybody on board. When that train returned, the boarder noticed that everyone looked like they were in pain and sounded the alarm to the operator, who E-stopped the train that had just left with 27 riders aboard. This probably saved all their lives, because if that train had gone over the crack I have no doubts it would've derailed entirely.

@@largol33t1 it's less about the city and more about the history of the state. Since the Ohio Department of Agriculture oversaw state fairs in the 1800s into 1900s and when these state fairs became perminate fixtures known as amusement parks they kinda inherited this mess. If the Ohio Department of Agriculture doesn't view themselves as the best people to oversee amusement parks perhaps the state government should reassign amusement parks to a different state agency but that's just my 2 cents on the subject.

I actually felt kinda bad for the Department of Agriculture when I heard that, lol. They weren't TRYING to cover anything up. 2:23 so for those curious about the brady bunch thing: " Before the cast got on the roller coaster, Robert Reed noticed the camera on the front of the car looked unsteady. In another account, series creator Sherwood Schwartz said he thought the camera was too tall and would hit an overhang. Whatever the case, a test run was ordered without anyone on board, just to be safe. Sure enough, the camera flew off during the first run. When the car came back to the station, the camera was missing. Had anyone been seated in the car, the camera surely would have flown back and seriously injured them, perhaps fatally. Two cast members who would have been spared were Reed (Mike) and Susan Olsen (Cindy). Olsen refused to ride the roller coaster, so a stand-in was used. Barry Williams (Greg) held his hands in the air to cover the stunt-double's face. "

@carrotking123

@@karonga629 It could also be a historical thing. Before there were permanent amusement parks, there were (and still are) traveling carnivals and fairs, many of which were set up in conjunction with county fairs. Since county fairs prominently feature livestock and animal showings and competitions, and the dept of ag covers livestock, maybe they just scribbled down "fairs, carnivals, etc" under the dept of ag's job duties and just never updated it.

It’s more of if you hire roller coasters of America to build anything for you, you’ve made a mistakes. They purposely underbid everyone by a large amount, then cut costs all the way to ending it. Notice how the law suits say Roller Coaster Of Ohio. It’s a shell company they would do quite regularly. Form a shell company, outsource the work to that shell company. Then close that company after the coaster was built. In theory it helped them dodge lawsuits and negative press Also the wood itself was above the needed at the time. But they didn’t have enough supports.

I know this video is 4 years old, but there's a bit of an error with your description of the July 9, 2006 incident. A wooden support in the rose bowl section of the ride had cracked as a result of Kings Island's reinforcement of supports in other parts of the rides. The ride had become too stiff in certain areas, causing too much stress on others. It's believed that one train passed over the support, cracking it, then the next train that passed over experienced a major bump in the track damaging the support further. Both trains completed the course, but when the second train returned one of the ride operators noticed that riders seemed to have experienced extreme discomfort. The ride op immediately yelled for the ride to be emergency stopped. There were no trains on the course when this happened, one was in the loading station and the other is the one shown half-way up the lift hill in the footage you have. The people treated were the riders on the second train, the riders evacuated were on the train that was halted before dropping from the lift hill, none of which were injured. At no point did the ride stop mid course. The E-stop was not a result of ride failure, but instead a result of a ride operator that held rider safety as the highest priority. There were no sensors on the ride indicating ride failure, from the perspective of the ride ops everything would have appeared normal. If that ride op hadn't called for an E-stop the 3rd train would have likely not made it past the rose bowl section of the ride. The story you gave is not far from the truth, but it the ride op deserves praise for the call to E-stop.

9:47 This saved lives! The people before them came in injured, so the workers E-stopped the ride and if they hadn't they would've derailed and potentially suffered serious or deadly injuries The wood had snapped and caused a sink in the rail. The pressure was enough to keep the coaster stable for the previous riders to go across with mild injuries, but another car going over would've caused a catastrophic failure and thus taking the riders down the with unstable frame

I rode the SoB (I like to think that its initials were intentional) the year that it opened, and it was a miserable experience. Shaky and jerky throughout, even moreso than other wooden roller coasters like the original Beast (which, despite its shakiness, is still an amazing coaster) and Mean Streak at Cedar Point. I'm honestly surprised that it survived as long as it did. Great video.

I grew up basically my whole life at Kings Island. Once I was tall enough to ride ever ride at the park me and my family invested in season passes. There isn't a ride in that park, kiddy section and all, that I haven't rode. The Beast has been a huge favorite to me for awhile, but I never rode this! Ever since I was little it was shut down, and my dad would tell me horror stories about how painful it was. He told me that he stood in line for hours on opening day, and that one person tried to cut the line and everyone in a 15 mile radius lost their shit at em. But when he finally got on, he had to leave the park and go home because he was too sore to ride anything else. As crazy as that park is, and as horrifying as it's tales can be; I can't wait till they finish the Giga coster this year and FINALLY destroy The Vortex. That ride has almost killed me on soooo many occasions. I got stuck at the top of the main hill once and, overall, that ride has always been horribly painful. One night after riding it I cried myself to sleep because of the amount of pain in my skull from the way the ride banged my head around. The Vortex was just metal Son of the Beast, in my opinion.

SoB was extremely rough.. I was 13 when it was built, my buddy and I didn't give a crap how rough it was.. It was the biggest and baddest coaster in the park. We loved the hell out of that ride. I rode Son of Beast a few times and hated it. It was waaaaay too jerky. Funny story though- I was riding the ride with one of my friends' moms and was like screaming in pain around each turn (because it would shake you so hard, and there was something on the side of the cart that was jabbing into my leg). She thought I was just screaming out of fear, so she was laughing really hard at me- up until a bug flew right into her mouth and down her throat.

I rode this ride only 2 times. The first time was with my classmates back in 05. Thought is was fun but it seemed off. My friends loved it that they got bounced around a lot since it’s kind of like the back of the bus if you hit big bumps. For me it wasn’t so bad. It was last quarter part of track that was bad. I noticed it get rickety that my head would bang a bit hard to the seat. Gave me a headache afterward. The second time around was with my family in 07. And that was the last time I rode it. My dad says he wouldn’t get back on it cause his back started hurting and it wasn’t like the first time he rode it when it first opened. Something has changed. For me I noticed more jerking in the seats than before and more banging to the back of head. Overall it could have been a good coaster if it was built correctly. Plus my family is all for the Beast. Always a tradition to start with the Beast when we first arrive to the park and always end with the Beast for the night. The Beast has its flaws too but that is mainly the cars themselves that is the issue. Ride the beast at night and on the second hill, the arm strap lifted up and unclamped from me. I had to quickly grab it or I would have flung off the ride. When I did grab the arm strap, the ride bumped hard enough that the clamp really clamped in that it stayed. By the time I got to the station, I couldn’t get out of the seat cause the locks were stuck. They had to shut the ride down till they got me out. Had several workers trying to pry the arm locks off so I can get out. They asked what happened and I told them that everything was fine until the second drop that somehow the thing flung up and was unlocked when the checkers have checked to see if it was locked before starting the ride. So something went wrong. They got me out and had to put the bars down for that seat only and have the other bars up so that maintenance would know which seat to take a look at. I will never forget that. Scared me to death and my dad didn’t know that was the reason why I screamed so loud on the hill cause normally I don’t scream on coasters. I love coasters and laugh when I’m enjoying them and say Whoooo! But that time around I was screaming.

It’s bizarre seeing this recommended to me. I remember riding this at 12 years old and just being completely destroyed where I felt like I couldn’t ride anything else the entire day. The ride was so bad it literally just ended the day for me and my family because it jerked us around so much. My family just casually went there knowing nothing about the park but that it was close to a spot in Kentucky we were vacationing. Watching this now, is absolutely terrifying.

I actually rode the Son of Beast the day of the 2006 incident. My parents and I had ridden it once in the morning and loved it. We went back for one last ride before leaving in the evening, and noticed a dramatic change. We notified ride operators of how battered we felt, with bruises already starting to form on our bodies, and were told that's "how it's supposed to be." By the time we reached our car, we could see emergency vehicles heading for the ride and knew that we were right in thinking something was off. Such a shame.

A train returned to the load/unload station and one of the ride operators noticed that riders had appeared to have experienced extreme discomfort. The ride op called for an E-stop and the ride was stopped as the other train was halfway up the lift-hill. Cedar Fair has always held rider safety as the highest priority. I wouldn't be surprised if Cedar Fair had mandatory safety training immediately after buying Paramount Parks. It's possible that the train on the lift hill would have continued on the course had Cedar Fair not purchased the park. The outcome of this would have been fatal.

Given that Cedar Fair's priorities right now are rider throughput and reliability, yeah, there's no way that this piece of junk would have been built the way it was under Paramount.

It's fun but these videos shouldn't be taken too seriously though right? most of it is looking up stuff you can find on Wikipedia or fansites like 'Theme Park Tourist' (who also mostly get facts just off the internet), downloading clips to put to it and writing a voice over . It's a fun youTube series but that's really all it is, a KZfaq series. I'm not having a go at the uploader, I enjoy most the videos, but just sayin' .. because you see so much of the past being 'branded' now with various channels, doesnt necessarily reflect the past fully

I grew up with Kings island and while I was only 2-3 years old when Son of beast came out, my mom remembers it clearly since she grew up in Cincinnati. Son of beast is pretty infamous for kings island, if you grew up in the area and been to kings island, chances are you’ve heard of this ride and not in a good way. And now that it’s demolished because of Banshee, there’s little memorial (a tombstone) in the waiting area so it’s kind of a nice touch.

Oh yeah, and another thing. The Racer technically didn't almost kill the Brady Bunch. It was just a twist of an outcome. The woman who played the mother on the show actually was scared of roller coasters and wanted to experiment with the ride with the camera on it before the cast would get on. The camera wasn't properly attached, so it broke as the coaster was operating. If the Brady Bunch decided to ride it with the camera not attached properly, someone would've got hit and the head and die on it.

I know I'm very very far from alone on this, but I just have to say how much I love the wooden coasters. not just because of the sound and the feel, but the SIGHT - the intricate web of supports and bridges you fly around and through ... you can't beat that, in my opinion. it's a really complex and overlapping pattern, the wooden criss-cross, and so it's just a really really interesting thing to fly around. I love that. then, of course, come on. clicketty-clack clicketty-clack clicketty-clack ... the quiet hum, then BOOM. you're off. awesome tension, awesome experience. a good wooden rollercoaster has so much going for it that a more modern steel design just can't. or won't.

Rode this once back in about 2004 and that was enough for me. The ride was rough and being rather tall my knees were against the hand rail in the car. I spent most of the ride trying to keep them from slamming into the metal bar repeatedly.

Hey, at least this coaster operated for more than a couple of days. You should really do a video about Ring Racer. It's still standing but not operation, with no intention about reopening it. Most people who aren't enthusiasts outside of Germany don't really know about it, and I dont think you've heard of it, but it would make a neat video, expecially that thier aren't many videos on it.

SOB is what happens when you hire non coaster designers to design a coaster and non coaster builders to build a coaster. I know upwards of 20 enthusiasts who rode it, not one of them had a good thing to say. Regardless of old/new trains or with/without loop it just sucked.

I rode it all the years it was open and operating with the loop and without. I am from the old school before steel coasters became so popular and wooden coasters were the norm. Riding a wooden coaster you were thrown around to high heaven. I still am a woodie fan and a member of ACE. This was a damn good coaster and I am happy to have been able to ride it. Any other Son of Beast fans out there? Steel is just so tame, not a fan of "smooth" rides and I am 63-years-old.
