I’ve been a supporter of Defy for a few years and finally got to meet Chris and visit his shop this year on a day off from tour. I have several of their bags but my Bucktown in black xpac is my daily driver. Solid all around.

One of my favorite bags in my collection and it’s an underrated company. I have the one black x-pac so I didn’t get this version in black multicam. I probably will once there are sales.

For those interested, the main compartment is HUGE. This video doesn't do load-out justice for this bag. Biggest gripe for me are the zippers. This is a two-hander every time for sure. Just FWIW. As an aside, I do wish they'd have added the/a laptop compartment separately to the back and added minor organization to the interior back panel of the admin panel. This could be a holy grail bag if those few things were addressed. Seriously. It's that nice. Video doesn't do this bag justice.

Visited the shop to get some of their packs in hand, as they're just down the street from my chiropractor. You're right about the quality, it felt very nice. I'm really digging that REDRUM black-XPAC-with-red-interior version. That said, as a bike commuter, a more breathable back harness is essential for me, especially at that price range. I want to support a bag company making good stuff not just in the US but in my city, so I might buy some of their pouches. But until they revise their harness system or until I hit a different income bracket, this backpack & their Verbockel are gonna have to go in the "someday" pile for me. Great review!

The Bucktown is going to my local tailor for a modification. I’m having a top admin pocket, generous in size, between the 2 zippers on top. This is a kick ass bag!

Your second dislike is exactly how I felt about the Bucktown I bought (and returned) last year. I got the black xpac version with the red interior. It was a BEAUTIFUL bag, but the fact that everything else was so overbuilt almost worked against it when you see the things they "forgot". The lack of interior lining in the top (ceiling?) panels, as well as the front of the main compartment that you mentioned, was so glaring, it was hard to overlook. The other killer for me was that they used VX21 xpac for the exterior, which felt super flimsy and lightweight especially with the seatbelt webbing and other substantial materials sewn onto it. Obviously that's different in different material versions, but it was enough to make it feel like it would eventually wear out. With a bag that is priced the way that was, I just couldn't get past how it felt, and sent it back. Had they used more robust xpac like I've had in several other bags, I think it would have been a different story for me. Thanks for another great review.! I'm definitely looking to get my hands on another one of these someday as they keep experimenting with materials and hopefully add some updates and details.

Definitely my two dealbreakers here are that the front zipper pocket should be oriented on the opposite side for righties. Second is that the lack of attention to detail (or cost cutting) that led to some of the camo panels going horizontal (as it should be) but the other panel like the front top have the camo pattern going vertical- which just looks yuck on its own but would bug me to no end on a bag that had mismatched panels.
