Hey guys, beautiful home, awesome video!! Thought I'd throw a tip I saw online at y'all. Putting your meals in a ziplock with an inch wide opening at the top before you put it in your vacuum sealer bag helps with the holes poking, also writing out your meal on your paper towel before it goes in the sealer helps you recognize what it is, esp those ones you don't finish in the first six months or so! Happy Trails, keep up that gourmet cooking! Thanks for all the awesome videos!

Great video. I learned a trick or two from you. I do combine my dehydrated meals, but just before the trip, which speeds up meal prep at camp and spoilage isn't an issue. At home, I keep everything separate for storage. When hiking, in the afternoon I will add just a little bit of water to the evenings meal so it partially re-hydrates. I find it helps with some meats and grains, like corn, and doesn't hurt more delicate veggies like bell peppers. I double bag that meal, just in case of a leak.

So happy I found you guys. My girls and I are doing the PCT in '19 and I'm a home cook. The only part of the trail that worries me is all the junk "food". I'm looking at a lot of freeze dried and dehydrated foods to cook/eat like we're at home. Great info!

Thanks for the video!! You cook much the way that I do! I take a couple of shortcuts though. Often I'll split a Mountain House in half and add my own touches and extra veggies. I use Pronto Barilla pasta to speed up the prep time and lose the startchy texture. Love, LOVE the spiced rice w raisins from A Taste Of India! Bring along some chutney leather and...yum!!! Have you tried Alpineaire's guacamole yet? I haven't, but it looks promising!

BTW, if you take meals that are dehydrated whole, vacuum seal and freeze them, they can store for months before you use them. They will be good for the first 3-4 days on the trail, especially if packed with an O2 absorber, you just plan to eat the whole meals first and the other ones later.

Anyone dries baked beans in a glass house in the summer? It gets over 40°C / 105°F in there all day long. Is that enough? How long would it take to dry some?

How long would these meals with the beans rice dehydrated. Last in a Mylar bag? I would like to make some plant based mini meals mres for the coming famine shortage etc. but how long would it be safe for in the shelf? Does rice get bacteria in it while dehydrating? Since temps don’t stay on entire time I’ve heard they go off and on. Also how long would rice take to dehydrate and what temp is safe?

Very helpfully video....I have been dehydrating/vac sealing for many years also...Q: Except for sauces or like consistancies ,, why do you use liners in the dehydrator ?? Totally agree ,, if meal planning at any time ,, a few nights of prep can last many months... Huge cost savings if used regularly,,year after year.....of course after recovering the cost of equipment and disposable items (bag products)....The book references in the beginning are extremely helpful for ideas I have not done.....Separate or full mixed meals are my go to.......Thanks for sharing...............Stay Safe and God Bless......

I am sure you figured out by now. The sour cream was way too playable, it should be crisp and breakable. It is also better to powder and you can even dehydrate another hour or two and powder again for best results in reconstituting.

is the pasta and rice cooked then dehydrated or just as it was in the pack? it all looks amazing
@onthetrailwithbart5236 жыл бұрын
The pasta and rice are both uncooked. On the trail, I boil it for 5 minutes and put twice as much water as there is pasta or rice. Then let sit for 30 minutes in a cozy. The reason that I don't dehydrate cooked pasta/rice is it never seems to reconstitute well, and is more chewy/tough.
@Elldeeve6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the fast reply, I'v just found out about cozys, thats a game changer. Have you had any luck with dehydrating low fat tinned chili, fat content is 1% of the tin. its vac packed in my fridge waiting for two weeks to test its rankness or rehydratability

Just a question, if I dehydrate my own meals and vacuum seal them then take them on an airplane for a hunting trip is there any problem with them opening up or popping at high altitude being in luggage on the plane?
@onthetrailwithbart5235 жыл бұрын
I would have to guess that there wouldn't be a problem. I suppose if you were to to look at the vacuum pack during the flight, it would look less compressed. But it should recompress once you come back to sea level.

@ChallengeTheNarrative6 жыл бұрын
Noodles are dry to begin with. Maybe different in Aaaaamerica
@ccameron93985 жыл бұрын
Cooking and dehydrating the noodles actually makes sense. The weight of the noodles won't be much different, but it uses less fuel to boil water to rehydrate than it does to sustain a boil to cook the noodles.
@alexhankins14725 жыл бұрын
C Cameron is why people cook and dehydrate noodle instead of cook on site. And pasta is used a lot in dehydration and rehydration because it’s high calorie for the weight. I cook pasta into all my backpacking meals. And like rice it’s nice and filling to the stomach and brain lol
@georgemasson61255 жыл бұрын
Is cooking then deydrating pasta, different from just using dried pasta? Sorry if that's a silly question.

Lots of great info, thanks for sharing. Do you need to vac seal it, or is that just to save space? I know it will last longer, but say for how I backpack, I'm only out a week at the most, the food should keep for a week in regular bags? Other question, I see you didn't use any meet, you substituted turkey for beef,.. I'm guessing the beef does not re hydrate as well, or keep well? Thanks
@onthetrailwithbart5236 жыл бұрын
You don't need to vac seal anything if it's just for a week. We vac seal so it will last a year. The reason I use turkey is that it low fat, which means it won't go rancid. You could dehydrate very very lean beef, but there's a chance it could spoil, but that's only if you're planning on using it several weeks later. If you're gonna use it the next week, probably no problem as long as you use lean (
@flashmanv32606 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much, great info just getting into dehydrating backpacking meals !

If you use beef you have to take paper towel and blot up all the fat as it cooks and as it dehydrates. It's a lot of blotting!

Putting beef in a colander in the sink and pouring hot water over it works well at removing any fat left after cooking ,then dehydrating.

@mega_game_play5 жыл бұрын
Robert, yes and no. 250 is way too high. My oven temp goes down to 170 degrees F at the lowest. That’s maybe okay for making gravel or jerky but too hot for most other things. A dehydrator is much better.
