*** About Living Traditions Homestead ***
Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
We put out 2 new videos every week! Wednesday and Saturday. We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we give up the rat race and live simpler, more fulfilling life in the country.

I've used the "tray on the dashboard of my pickup truck" technique and it works okay. It also keeps people from borrowing the truck. I want to look into getting a dehydrator, but we have a lot of appliances already. The issue for me is grinding them up into a powder. I have to do that in the spice grinder outside. Now I need a new spice grinder.

I just received 20# of fresh off the farm chili peppers from a friend in NM. I could roast and freeze them as I've done before, but I thought dehydrating might be interesting to try. I'm excited and hope I don't spoil the whole bunch. Many of these chilies are the size of bananas. Beautiful chilies.

Great video! I had the same type of dehydrator I got at a swap meet for 5 bucks :) I did the same with turning and rotating trays. I used it till it died(or I killed it ) haha! I got a knockoff brand now that’s similar but not near as expensive as an Excalibur. It has horizontal airflow, timer, temp gauge, and ten trays. It was a gift from my daughter :) sometimes I miss my round one though :) Simply did the job . Thanks for a great video! God bless .

I know this is an old video but I came and watched this one after your recent harvest video. I'm looking into dehydrators and I had a friend tell me once that he had plastic dehydrators and he strongly recommended that I get two. One to use with peppers and onions and one for everything else. He said the plastic holds on to the smell and flavor of the onions and peppers and ruins the flavor of your fruit and everything else. Have you found this to be true? Thank you. I love your videos and I'm so happy for you guys having such a blessed garden.

Hi Sara. I love watching you and have learned so much ❤️. I also dehydrated my peppers this year, but was scared to do the hot peppers in fear that we would all be crying and in pain. Have you had any problems with this? Also can you show us how you blend them for spices, what do you use to powder them and would love if you shared you spice recipes. I love my old presto dehydrator, I purchased extra shelves that you can disassemble and use as spacers to dry bigger items. Also have mesh and plastic liners for small items and fruit roll ups. Have had mine for 30 years and still going strong. (Knock on wood) lol.

I know this is older comment but when I do hot peppers in my dehydrator I actually set the whole thing on the deck for about 2 hours at the beginning. I did pepper gas us out of the house with the habeneros the first time. But after about 2 hours the peppers form a dry skin so the smell drops down to almost nothing. Then it comes back into the house. I do the same with onions and garlic too. And one last "oh my dont do this in the house " if you grow horseradish don't grind/process in the house without good ventilation lol it should be weaponized! Lol so we pick a nice day and grind outside or in my moms garage if no good days in forecast. That stuff is lethal. Lol. Happy dehydrating!

What Is an Ancho Chile Pepper? The ancho chile pepper is the dried version of the poblano pepper (from Puebla, Mexico) or specifically, it's the dried version of the almost-ripe state of the poblano pepper. In other words, the chile we know as a poblano pepper is a fresh chile that is harvested before ripening, which is why it's green. But when allowed to ripen, a poblano turns red and develops additional sweetness, which in turn balances out its already mild heat. Thus, ""an ancho chile is red"" while a poblano is green.

Most my cayenne peppers are green. I had to pick them before the frost last night. Dehydrating the green ones; will they be ok or should I let them sit out to turn red, IF they will turn red. I usually just let the red ones sit inside in a sunny window to dry. I want to dehydrate pepper Bell & jalapenos, too. I do not have a dehydrator. Someone suggested I use the oven on the lowest setting (170 F, for me) & keep the door open a bit to let moisture escape. Do you have any suggestions. I do not want to buy a dehydrator. I usually will freeze whole serranos, jalapenos. I add the whole frozen serranos to food (soups/stews). The serrano are too mushy to cut up when thawed. Thanks.

My stomach was fine, and I didn't even ate that much food as it was painful to swallow with tonsilitis. and yes, it did burn on the way out. But a minute of burn is nothing comparing with severe weakness antibiotics used to give me, and certainly worth to get rid of the pain in the tonsils.
