An unboxing and installation of the Dekoni Audio DT Series Elite Velour Earpadz for the Beyerdynamic DT1770...yes...that's exactly how the website describes it.
Awful naming aside, these earpadzzzz are fantastic--compared to the stock pads, the Dekoni's are in a completely different league.
This video contains the unboxing and installation.

Agree with you, very typically headphones don't come with 'either excellent' earpads nor cables. Some will say that's a given, to be expected by the buyer, they'll say - considering the manufacturer is applying More quality everywhere else, the drivers, the frame, etc. But I think a $500, or ..1000 hp ought to be a top notch, complete headphone out of the box with no upgrading necessary. That said, I find that an aftermarket alternative earpads will vary... somewhat to greatly change the characteristics of the hp. For instance, a more porous memory foam may lower the bass considerably. A deeper foam may increase bass bloom, or a denser pad may increase treble and sibilance. Tricky business. Dekoni sure is comfortable, and finding the right size and density is key. I'm looking for a replacement pads for my Audioquest Nighthawk (which are pleather, angled, memory foam (honestly not that great of memory, but deep) and flaking after so many years of use). Probably going with a Dekoni pad, maybe the Elite, and Hoping it can fit the ring just right, and bend slightly, which is a sort of egg shape. Thanks for the review!

Yes, very comfortable, totally agree. However, these pads totally change the sound profile of the headphones, making them a bit too boomy for my liking. The DT1770's are already a bit on the bassy side, and the memory foam pads put them way over the top.

I really like your videos. They're earnest. They're short. They're not filled with theatrics or digressions. You believe what you believe and you make a tight argument for it. I would have liked to have heard more about the difference in sound. Ease of pad-swapping is less important to me than the effect on sound.

Why are you bashing the original Beyerdynamic earpad? I find them comfortable and with right amount of horizontal pressure. What's the use thicker earpads? Isn't the horizontal pressure not increased that way? What's the price of those thick earpads?
@NoThemeReviews
@NoThemeReviews 4 жыл бұрын
Umm. Because I don’t think they are comfortable. The exceptionally tight pressure of the headphones isn’t helped with the original pads.

Comfort is subjective so if your happy then I would chill. Otherwise the only other reason to get pads are to change up the sound signature or quality. An example of quality could be like the sennheiser hd 600 line. The foam pads lose their bounce over time (took my 660 about 4 months) making it so the pads became more uncomfortable over time and my ears started touched the side of the drivers.

I ended up pulling the pads over the cups on my 1990s like you did. No way you can get the leather into the slots. Edit: I went with the elite hybrids and love them

The "slot" is a detachable plastic ring. You are supposed to pry that off, attach tha ear pad, then put it back on. Doesn't anyone read manuals anymore?
@johnnelson4386
@johnnelson4386 4 жыл бұрын
How did you get them around the earcup? the back part is super thin and i cant seem to get them around the back of my 1990s, the pads that come with them are easier to get on
@nekekaminger
@nekekaminger 4 жыл бұрын
@Truth I just double checked the manual of the DT 1990 and interestingly it does in deed not mention the detachable plastic ring. The Manual of the Amiron Wireless however does (that's where I read it) and the mechanism is exactly the same on both headphones. I own both and have changed pads on both plenty of times.

It's crazy that the 990/770 and 900/700 have perfect pads, but the headphone that costs way more has the worst pads.

You can pry up the ring. its much easyer. Swivel the pads around the ring and pop in the ring with the dekoni pads .But i think Beyerdynamic does know what they are doing.So why should be the original not good enough..I ones changed the earpads from the 770 80 ohm to the 1990 250 ohm. The sound on the 1990 became very muddy and awfull.

You realize that you call one of the best stock velour pads on the market, ones that are actually used by many people to mod other headphones - a terrible pads? LOL . If you think Beyers pads are bad then you know literally nothing about pads. Do I think Dekoni make good pads? Yes, but they are overpriced.Better then Beyers? Hmm not really. Thicker yes but Beyers pads are part of headphone tuning for example closed and open back headphones have different pads although they look very similar. Closed have denser more firm pads in order to reproduce better low end and preserve sound isolation. I hope by now you realized you have changed sound signature of your headphones by adding this much space between drivers and your ears.

One mans treasure is another mans garbage. Why should I care if other like the pads? Do YOU care many people don’t like Beyer products, including their pads? As for my pad knowledge, I didn’t know it was such a divisive thing. Now I can’t change pads I bought for a headphone I paid for without you taking issue with it? THAT is the level we’re at, huh?

The problem is the stock pads are poorly tuned and are one of the reasons the DT1770 gets a certain amount of hate, even though it's an excellent headphone. The velour pads provide terrific clarity but they kill the bass; the leatherettes provide substantial bass but at a loss in clarity. It's reasonable to ask whether there's a way to get both and whether a pad swap can fix this Goldilocks too hot/too cold situation. Dekoni's pads are expensive, and they're not necessarily the tuning fix. I've purchased lots of their pads (which are excellent pads) but if they're not the right match, they're not a decent fix. I've tried to fix the flaws in the DT1770 with sheepskin (lots of bass, but muddy) and with fenestrated sheepskin (lots of clarity, zero bass). I came here hoping this guy had tried the sheepskin/velour hybrid. As it turns out, he didn't even say what the difference in sound would be with these. That difference is the only thing I care about, so I'm disappointed. But pad swapping is not an atrocity. It's the next wave. As it turns out, the pads do make a huge difference and some of the best manufacturers are a little derelict in not making sure the pads improve the experience, rather than simply tossing on some stock pads. Velour, by itself, solves some problems but not without producing some of its own. Velour provides more clarity than leather or sheepskin but it can kiss off a lot of bass. That's the Achilles heel to both Beyerdynamic and Sennheiser. Focal does a better job of trying to match the pads with the cans, themselves. Audeze goes with leather and pleather, which is why their headphones have richer bass but end up veiled, unless you EQ them. There's got to be a way to tune a headphone better using some sort of hybrid between foam and animal/fake animal materials. There needs to be a material that traps the bass without leaving the HF muddy in the process. The first manufacturer to figure this out will reap the rewards of doing so. So, I find Dekoni a useful agent in pushing the boundaries of what the pads can do - even if their product is pricey.

The original pads aren't bad at all. Call me crazy but I'd rather stick with the pads that Beyer designed the sound signature around rather than some third party company that spams youtubers for reviews to justify their incredibly overpriced pads...

You’re not crazy at all. I like the original pads for all of my Beyerdynamic headphones. I have several 3rd party pads but have yet to find a reason to change
@billkilpatrick3465
@billkilpatrick3465 2 жыл бұрын
If you want to stick with the original pads because you trust Beyerdynamic to have given you the perfect match, then stick with the original pads. I know, from pad swapping on the Focal (Elegia and Clear), their pads are non-negotiable. Those cans sound best using the pads designed for them. But Beyerdynamic and Sennheiser have a tendency to give you generic velour pads that don't necessarily maximize the potential of their headphones. That's not to say that pad swaps are a guaranteed fix, because an aftermarket pad can also overcompensate. The original pads on the Beyerdynamic DT1770 are like something out of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. The velour pad gives you plenty of transparency and sparkle but at a serious loss in bass. The leatherette pads give you that bass but at a serious loss in treble. Can there not be a sweet spot in-between? I've used the Dekoni sheepskins on the DT1770. It brings it with respect to the bass, but it, too, is a little muddy. I've tried the fenestrated sheepskins and the bass is gone. It's a total disaster. I came to this video hoping to see if anybody had tried the sheepskin/velour hybrid. This guy obviously hasn't. He hasn't even told us what the Dekoni pads sound like, just that they're way nicer than the stock pads, which is probably a given.
