My father knew Del. He’d come into my father’s bar occasionally, have a drink and asked him to cash a check. These were the days before atms etc. He told my father that he had a big hit record currently. My father responded well I have a blonde teenage daughter who would love to hear this song. Father called me at home and told me that Del Shannon wanted to sing me some of his recent hit song. And he did. And father cashed his check! Thank you father and thank you Del! A great memory that’s true! L. Wood ❤

I never appreciated growing up a teenager in the 60’s until recently. I didn’t realize then, the magnitude of what we had. Seeing the world today, the kids of today…..I could almost cry. Now I’m 72 and realizing……my God..WE HAD IT ALL! God bless all of you, especially those who were there and understand. ✌️😎☮️

Born in the 90's and I envy you. I was born early enough to experience a world without phones and social media but too late knowing I am missing it and still have a lot of years to go dealing with generations of people that will never develop real personalities and shy away from true interpersonal interaction...

The music will never leave our thoughts. We could sing along with the tunes. Now, how much can you scream and that is sad. I sometimes get lost when I hear those songs and cry because that time is lost, Earl Love the oldies, class of 1969

My late husband and I used to go dancing most Saturday nights at a pretty nice club with a great house band. All young guys. Runaway was always a favorite song of mine, and I kept bugging the band to please learn it. They finally did and did it brilliantly. What a thrill to dance to it played by a live band years after it was big. Ever after they'd strike up Runaway when we came into the club, so we'd have to hit the floor before we'd even sat down. Great times.

IMO I think it's the very best version of the song. Even better than the original. Shannon said this version is how he wanted to record it originally, but the big shots wouldn't let him. Given that he was really ahead of his time with the rock beat, pushing the song forward and getting people up on their feet.

Del Shannon's does not remind me of John Fogerty one bit. John Fogerty a little bit on the conceited side he thinks he's the greatest thing that happened to rock music when he it's not try a little bit of Ricky Nelson a lot of joint Fogerty's music is nothing but noise

@@fredkaplan9720 Fred, Sure you've got the right Fogerty? Dude, it's well documented that CCR were NEVER into the Drugs and/or Alcohol scene. They are not like the overindulged, overrated and overhyped beatles. Never heard so much Bullcack about the mersrybeat. Hype again you see. CCR were a solid Crew, man. John Fogerty is as far-sighted as Zager&Evans. Chill out, dude 🚬.

No kidding, it really was one of the top, maybe Top 5, rock songs ever recorded. It crossed all sorts of barriers at the time. His unique use of the minor chords and the famous Musictron (by Max Crook) took the music into a new direction, a direction that never turned back to the old style tunes before it. For a great song, combined as a solid trend setter, 'Runaway' will stand out 100 years from now and Shannon's story will live on thru it.

The LaSalle Hotel opened in 1927 at 45-47 Capital Avenue Battle Creek Michigan. The Hi-Lo Club was opened as a bar and "beer garden" in 1933. In 1954 the name was changed to the Gilbert Hotel. Rock-and-roll singer Del Shannon first performed his hit song, "Runaway" at the Hi-Lo Club in 1961. The hotel closed in 1978 and was demolished in 1984.

it was plenty manufactured. del was one of the few pre-beatles acts to write his own songs. there are tons of great artists these days - the difference is that the record industry is dead so you have to find the good music for yourself. music without the interference of corporate interests, exploitative contracts and sleazy hype men promising young bands “i’ll make you a star, kiddo!” is pretty great actually.

I have just read the sad news that Max Crook died just a few days ago on 1st July,2020. Max is the wonderful solo musician on Runaway, playing his own invention the Monophonic Synthetiser, which he called the Musitron. It looks very Heath Robinson (it is built with additional resistors, TV Tubes, and parts from household appliances and old amplifiers); but the very special sound and Max's energy and passion, together with Del Shannon's wonderful voice make Runaway one of the greatest hits of the early 1960's. Max co-wrote Runaway with Del. Max's chord change from A-minor to G was sheer musical genius. Del will always be one of my favourite singers of the 1960's and I hope he will never be forgotten. But I hope that Max Crook and his family are also remembered by us at this time. Rest In Peace Max.

When depression hits one can’t think or see things clearly. He was only human and like the rest of us he suffered from emotional pain. When he was feeling bad his managers wanted to send him on tour. What gets me is that no one encouraged him to see a doctor or encouraged him to get some type of help. I remember reading that in my local paper. He certainly had a large fan following.

My older siblings listened to Shannon, Buddy Holly, Everly Brothers, that whole lot. So I grew up on these guys. Had an old Motorola Stereo record player. Detachable speakers. State of the art back then. God, do I miss those times, and those singers.

Del Shannon I first heard “Hats off to Larry “ in a Ski Boat on a Hot Summers Day at a Family Picnic. My Cousin Jim had his Transistor cranked and we and a boatload of us singing the Song full volume. It was one of the happiest family moments as a kid. A few years later I remember the Song “From Me To You “ and loved it I was’t the only one as it became the first Beatles song I remember prior to them exploding. Last I worked on the James Taylor Album JT and Handyman became a smash. What inventive an inventive singer songwriter. He was a true Rock Star

Growing up in the music of the late 50’s and sixties Del was so great the (to the greatest) and then the 60’s and 70’s we were the aria to the greatest music . This all evolved because of the Del Shannons and the great rock and roll.

Met Del in Adelaide ( Australia) in 1975. After his fairly short time on stage he invited a few of us back to his room after for a beer. He had another gig the same night on the other side of town, so, much to the promoters distaste, Del agreed to come to that gig with us.What a thrill, driving around your home town with a roll n roll great.
