Roxanne is frustrated that her boyfriend Shawn is addicted to the “buy now pay later” purchase plans. And even though they make good money, they have debt, no savings and Shawn is in the market for a big screen TV. They’re keen to take the next step with the ultimate “buy now, pay later” life choice…having a baby. But can they afford it?

Hmm were they referring to it as a checking account or credit card. If the former, then yeah I agree zero balance is bad, but if it's the latter, then it's good to have a zero balance on credit cards

Some people who have a spending problem feel fearful when they have money which leads to them spending it and it's a vicious cycle of feeling insecure around money.

The actual debt was on the screen for a spilt second. I think it was $11,000. They would be at zero balance with the show's $5000 and her saved $6000.

Sure, having a Baby is expensive but the trick is to buy second hand. Stroller , jumpers and most babies/ toddlers don't need way to many toys. Buy them a Great interactive gift + your attention. Also join groups in your area. You may be surprised at how many Mother support groups they are. They usually exchange , trade base groups. Formula for diapers.

Sure, have a huge shower, but request 2nd hand gifts where possible. We discovered the fabulous world of pre-owned/pre-loved when a Value Village opened near us in the 90’s. It changed our lives and bank accounts. Invite me and I will show up with 7 onesies in perfect (resale) condition than one item with the price tag still attached. (If the recipient doesn’t like it they can re-donate.) I make no bones about it. And kids grow so fast that it’s virtually impossible to not to find almost-new items at any age or stage.

I use the 'Freecycle' and 'Buy Nothing' facebooks groups to donate things when I'm decluttering, and most of what I see offered there are baby toys, clothes, books, strollers, car seats, etc. Since you have nine months warning, you can pick up most of what you need for free...

This reminds me of my ex. He would take out payday loans to buy toys and tools he didn't need, not pay Bills and lie to me about it. Wait...they spent $550 on stuff for a baby when she's not even pregnant yet and they have a bunch of debt. What the hell? Gail told them to price things out, not to actually buy. It could be years before they actually get pregnant, especially given that they are older. That money should have gone toward their debt.

I don't get the mind set of people thinking they are 'getting something' with buy now pay later... I feel like a total chump if the credit card company / department store / car dealer makes so much more off me than they do off the next person who pays cash and is done. And it's not like you really have to delay getting what you want. If you delay the first big purchase, like a car, until you can really afford it, then you don't have a monthly payment. After that, it's really fast to save for the next item. So it's just ONE time you have the 'pain'. My husband and I did that when we were young, and bought inexpensive used cars when our friends were buying new. But then we never had car payments. We were able to save up and pay for nicer, newer cars. As we got older and made more money, we just saved larger amounts towards the next purchase. Now we usually buy new cars, always cash, and we've been keeping them for about ten years. So much cheaper over the life of the car!
