G'day mate, just so happens I sing in an original rock band also :) current name is "Solarstatic" if you want to check out a couple of our songs on iTunes or Google Play etc, but we're thinking of a name change. 48's must be the bike of choice for lead singers hehehe. Mine's a 2011 model, I get about 140km before the fuel light comes on but I can get over 200km before I really need to fuel up. I have screaming eagle slip on pipes wrapped and a Kuryakyn air cleaner with a Power Commander V. I've tucked the wires and made several other mods. I think the fuel sensor get's a bit confused when we do the tank swap but you'll learn to judge it. When I fill up, normally around 170km on after a fill, I usually still have about 3 litres in the tank. Del and Penny are awesome :) your bike's looking good and you'll appreciate the extra mileage, well done mate, love your music too. Rock on!!!

G'day mate, I have no idea how you are getting those miles? Maybe it has something to do with your Power Commander V? Have you done a tank swap too? I can't get anywhere near that even with my new tank! 70-75 miles and my fuel light is on. It still seems to read correct though with my new tank. The Transitions Yeah mate, same tank as you have now so 3.3 Gallons is about 12.5 Litres. The original peanut tank from the 48's is 7.9 Litres and a few guys I ride with get about 120km before they start looking for a gas station. I had a ride yesterday and filled up after 120km and only had to put 7 Litres to fill it to the brim so in theory I still had 5.5 Litres in the tank. My fuel light normally comes on around 140 - 160km into a ride but when I fill up I usually only need to put 9 - 10 litres in. I've never fully ran it dry with the new tank on it but I have gone over 200km and still had fuel in the tank. I have had my bike dyno tuned and they re-mapped it for the power commander to get around 73 HP at the rear tire. Maybe the PCV and Dyno have something to do with the mileage I get. Also I'm not sure what pipes and air-cleaner you have on the bike but they could play a part. The other thing is, I always fill up with 98 octane usually BP Ultimate here in Sydney Australia, so I'm not sure if that increases my fuel efficiency as well. With that new tank you should see more than 75 miles for sure? Keep me posted on what you find, feel free to contact me through my bands Facebook page if you like. Rock on bro!!!

*The 3.1 gallon 883 tank (which I thought was a peanut) at best gives a 100 mile range. My thought a decade ago was to extend the 883 tank upwards, making it taller instead of wider.*

You definitely made the extraction of the fuel pump look easier than what I accomplished. None the less I'm thrilled that I got this done myself. (Albeit a little bit of direction from you). Eric higgs Plenty of reasons to take the long route to work, the main one being you don't get there so quickly lol! ... the guest bike thing is not permanent, it was purely a one-off to help out a mate that we owe a huge favour to... lots of stuff to come on the Bonneville & Scrambler, but you know it's gonna happen, the pearls will return !!... they'll be back!

Bill Fuget I think he'll get to all of it in time, but he was hardly gonna upgrade to stage1 until he'd dealt with the tank range, as it was bad enough on standard fueling!

Moonfleet41 The air filter will come for sure! Del is right, had to sort my tank range first. The problem for me with filters (apart from cost as they cost a small fortune plus I will also have to tune or get the V+H fuelpak or tons of other choices) is the huge choice available. I just can't decide which i like best. The ones I like the look of so far are 10% over OEM but if I'm gonna do it i want to increase air flow by 20% + As far as foot pegs the standard 48 ones aint that pretty but i do find them comfortable and they grip my boots good. I wonder how well the metal ones will grip. Dont really like the look of bare trap and jaws style ones. Some use a mixture of metal and rubber which so far I'm prob swaying towards most. To be honest they are not top of my list just because mine are already comfy. Just got rid of all that shit that hung over my back wheel though so looks way cleaner and much more RocknRolla at the back now. :)

Richard Bale I don't think Harley ever intended them to be a distance bike... I guess at least with Harley Davidson, like no other manufacturer, the tanks on practically on all their bikes are interchangeable... try that on a Honda lol!

Moonfleet41 Hi, i was almost successful with my new fuel tank from paughco and i realized that the vent hole was on the right side instead of left. My fuel line is too short to reach. Any recommedation on how i should approach this obstacle?

Hi buddy, happy to help with this - you say 'vent hose', then 'fuel line' - firstly, do you mean vent hose, as in the overflow hose that I cut and shortened in this video?? Or do you mean the fuel supply line to send fuel to the carb?? And, is your bike fuel injection, or carb??

Moonfleet41 Yes, overflow hose in my EFI fuel tank. Also the hole looks like i have to screw something in it because it doesnt have anything sticking out like the one in my OEM tank. I dont know what it's called. Thanks.

Ok, trying yo picture this... you have bought a Paughco fuel tank, and the overflow outlet is on the right.....but there is no short protruding metal pipe to push a rubber hose over?.. do i have that right?.... so what DO you have there, is it a threaded hole.. can you send me a picture..?

These little jobs are really never that difficult, if you buy yourself the big, fat, blue service manual from Harley, you'll be surprised how easily they lay it out... ! Then again, you could always pop over and you could be the next guest bike on the bench!! It was great having a Harley back on deck, and I promised myself I will have another Harley some day, so it will happen! This recovery is slow and I just don't wanna tempt fate diving in to a heap of finance for a bike I'll only use on Sundays ... we only missed out on winning the StreetGlide by a cat's whisker, top 5 out of 10,000 and all that, but you never know who's watching!

Sure thing Whitey, the 3.3 is a fine range, you'll still get maybe 120 miles on a standard 883 which is usually enough for a bum break..lol

Indeed. The 4.5 gal. tank completely changes the look of the Sporty because it's geometry is completely different. Just checked the Paughco on line catalog. They have aftermarket tanks in both the 3.4 gal. and 4.5 gal. sizes but they're not cheap. Also they make them for both the carb and fuel injected models. Also you can mount an adapter on a fuel injection tank and then it will take a petcock.

EFI bikes have a reserve capacity metered by the fuel pump buddy, so when the fuel light comes up on the speedo clock you 'are on reserve', just like in your car !

Well thanks yeah I went to Harley to get a rear tire they wanted 350 dollars to put one on they said it was a special tire all super bikes use the same tire that's a joke I turn around and got one for a $117.00 dollars I actually traded my CL 125 1966 Honda for tire and install

But I love my XR 1200 I put drag bars on it it corners so well with them on body weight is right
