Top job Del. Reminds me of the whole point of your channel ; to help others. Some of us are old enough and "wise"? Important to mention… When the piston is in the rest position, the brake fluid will be balanced via The compensation hole. This compensation hole is very small, clean this compensation hole with a very thin wire of copper, if it would clog… you are guaranteed a dragging caliper, this has already happened to me twice!!! with the Honda CBX 1000. Stay Safe.

KZfaq must know I need to do mine 😅 and I hadn't even done a search. Don't know what your views are, Del. But I once saw this guy get some dry fine sandpaper and crosshatch the inside of the brake and clutch master cylinders to de-glaze them. Your videos are timeless Del and Penny x

OK, cross hatching is done in cylinders to hone metal piston rings in... these cylinders have soft rubber seals and should be mirror smooth inside otherwise any roughness at all will accelerate wear on those seals and end them early.. just clean them, fit fresh new seals and fresh fluid, job done mate. !

I had to check and bleed my front cylinder on my 83 z750 ltd last week, all looked ok, ended up bleeding the calipers above the cylinder to get all the air out then used your top tip of taping up the lever overnight as it was still a bit spongy. 100% better in the morning!!

We did get a parcel with a pair of beautifully made caliper pad pins in there, and a hand written letter... but it had no name, no address, and also made it clear he didn;t want to be identified...just signed it off "and old guy with a lathe"... so if it was him.. then please tell him i WILL be using the pins, they are perfect and im very grateful.. if he had given me even the smallest return contact, even a private email, i would love to have thanked him personally... .those pins are so perfect they are like Watch Parts...Once again, please tell him thank you and we are very grateful. Just me or has the 2x countersunk screws they use on every front lid of the reservoir always been made of Swiss Cheese?

This. They don't look that different, but when you have a mullered screw they make a world of difference. If you work on Japanese bikes, a set of JIS screwdrivers is a must have tool. Also when you do get the damaged screws out, put new ones in. They only cost a few quid for the OEM ones, or less from ebay for something compatible.

What about if under heavy braking from say 130mph I have fluid spraying out of the top of my reservoir cap.. could this be the seal in the master gone so fluid and pressure coming back through it and blowing out the top of the res cap ? Ninja Zx6r 1999

Bit of valve paste on a screwed screw works every time .correct fit screw drivers and a little tap help

Love the videos. I've wrenched on bikes for years but jobs like this and many others you've done go beyond the usual jobs I've done and are really fascinating to me. I've pulled the master cylinder off the bars countless times but never knew what was in there and how it ticks. Now I'd feel 100% confident rewatching this and doing it myself should the need arise. @@Moonfleet41 Exactly. I've always wrenched on my own cars and bikes. Used to be due to the fact I was a broke kid. I didn't have the money to pay someone to do something I was perfectly capable out figuring out. Now days it's more about just not wasting money and knowing that the job is done correctly. I laugh when guys ask "you do your own brakes"? I always tell friends that are scared to do more than pump their own gas, "just put it back together the way you took it apart". Either way, KZfaq channels like your's are a godsend now days. So much better than trying to read a greasy well used Chilton or Clymer manual with crap black and white photos back in the day. How did we survive lol?

Hi there, Delboy (and the rest of you guys). Now that you mention corrosion... I have an excellent tip in case you haven’t heard about that product. It’s called “Corrosion-X” and is quite inexpensive - they claim it’s used by the US Navy. It’s based on the fact that all metals are a little magnetic, so it binds to them magnetically - making it very durable even at high pressures and temperatures. I’ve used it myself and it’s amazing how effective it is (I tested it on a couple of screws etc in salt water, and the treated ones were like new after that treatment), My brake components haven’t been tested with it yet, but at least the outermost components such as that circlip and outer piston end will benefit from it... and probably the inner parts as well.

I have similar Tokico calipers on my ZX6-RR, but four pots not six, just for information when Kawasaki send their master cylinder kits the middle seal is not fitted as helpful Suzuki appear to do. Looking at the the seal you'd think that will never fit on there! well it does and there is a method I found to fit it which I discovered on another video, it is a bit stressful though! Just to let you know there is a bit of a gap in the method for some owners doing a brake rebuild. Great videos by the way, not being a total newbie on bikes after 20 plus years of racing but working on mostly new bikes so you don't really get the age related wear and things usually come apart really easily. Now having a small collection of older bikes (the newest is nearly 20 years old) I have had to learn a lot of new skills and I found your explainations invaluable. Keep up the good work....everyday is a school day.

Very good camera work. Good flow in video with closeup show how to fix it. Very good advice witch grip to use to get look ring out with right tool. So as a novis this video made me safer to do this job.

Here's what gets me: See how simple and elegant design that master cylinder is? How did we de-evolve into the rubber hose, mounted on a stick up in the air like a hood ornament master cylinder? Sure for a $110 bucks more you can get the after thought reservoir that plugs in with no hose but even that is not nice, sleek, ununweird like what Del was working on. The one on my new Triumph looks like it was designed by an accountant.

Its cheaper buying the seal and spring kit instead of piston.Piston wont be damaged you just need to replace rubber seals spring and clip.

I think this vid confirms what is wrong with my FZ6 currently. The lever feels like it catches slightly before it begins to make pressure. Not great pressure either for a braided lines in a race set up. Calipers are completely free from air.

Great video thanks , just a quick one I have a 15.8mm / 5/8 master cylinder with 6 pot calipers but I want to change to nissin 4 pots , could I do that and keep my stock master cylinder without any problems , its a zx9r and I want to put the triumph/nissin 4 pots on but don't want to change master cylinder so do you know why people want new master cylinders and is it just down to the feel of the brake , do you have previous experience of something similar , any advice would be much appreciated

Im not the best qualified person to answer this one, but from what i understand, swapping from 6 to 4 piston calipers makes little difference as long as the collective pumped volume of fluid behind the pistons is the same or similar... and in most cases, 4 pot calipers have bigger pistons than 6 pots, so it is.. The swap is usually motivated by the 4 pots being less liable to jam up and easier to bleed.. If it was my bike, it'd plumb them up, and go for a careful ride, see how they feel..!

@@Moonfleet41 thanks for the feedback much appreciated, yeah I just want calipers that need rebuilding less and a little cheaper to keep in good condition, I might get those four pots and give them a try , I think those standard 4 pots have a 14mm master cylinder internal bore and the 6 pots are 15.8mm , trying to find out as much as poss before I press the buy now button 😁. @@bccapone837It's not critical mate, at the very worst you might find you need a little more lever pressure to create the same force on the disc face, but if you switch over to some new copper sintered brake pads, they create a greater rolling drag and, therefore, more bite needing less lever pressure... so they'll more than compensate!

I would like to know if those same diameter piston able to replace the oem kit? Is it as long as the diameter of piston is the same will do the job? Some piston do have splines and some not, interchangeable?

I bought complete new handle bar with master cylinder, but I think that something is wrong with cylinder. I perform air bleeding (conventional way and reverse), I don't think that air remain in system, but breaking force is just too weak, brake pads move just small amount, and there is almost no back pressure on lever. What is strange to me is when I press handle bar, there is significant fluid shooting in reservoir, I must put cap on reservoir otherwise I it would just spray all around. Is this normal behavior that fluid shoots out during pressing handle bar?

Red rubber grease, it was supplied with the kit.

@@Moonfleet41 is there anything comparable, my kit did not come with the grease, how do you think jus using brake fluid will work. Ive seen others do that. And cool fact, 90's yamaha four wheelers have same exact internals in master cylinder, its why i checked your vid out. Cylinder im rebuilding was all apart and i needed to kno how to put it together.

Yes I have struggled in the past with poorly designed cir-clip pliers, usually chinese rubbish. Now I see there are better with that ever important ridge on the tip. WTG Wiha this is the first I hear about them. Good tools always goes along way. Thanks for showing. PS. Harley footpeg mount c clips are ever so tiny, I struggle fitting the pliers in those small holes, do you use a special one with smaller diameter tip?

Hey brother.. yes indeed, bless them HD clips.. the smallest one is under your brake and clutch levers, holding the pin in place.. the hole in those clips is 0.8mm, so you do need the correct sized pliers to get hold of them... never enough tools aye :-)

8:28: Is that simply some Red Rubber Grease or does it have to be specific to a braking circuit? Alternatively, can I pour some DOT4 everywhere and consider it will lube things enough to put it back together? (Wanting to do the job without waiting for new grease)

Hi Delboy. Great video. Just did the same job on my 1999 cbr600f. It was fine when I first fitted it but after leaving it a few hours I’m finding the piston isn’t returning back out and sometimes just stays fully in? I then press it a few times and it returns back out and will seem fine. I’ve definitely fitted it in the correct order. I’ve put red grease on the piston seal and clean brake fluid on the seal that attaches to the spring as my manual says to do. Brakes have been bled and no bubbles coming through calliper bleed screws so I’m stumped 🤔 any suggestions would be much appreciated, thanks
