it's amazing how a colour can change the look of a bike, the black tank and fairings, etc... make it look really special and tie in with the black springs on the rear suspension, can't wait to see the finished art work on it. Great job.

Thanks Woody, you're right, its important to tie a few things in so it sits right... most bikes have more black on them than any other colour, so its pretty easy on this one.. !

little trick for ya :D .. if you put your hand into a clear plastic bag .. the ones for the fridge ect .. close your eyes. then you can feel every single imperfection there is, it will enhance the imperfections :) . try it out see if it works for you, one more thing, for better atomisation on the paint. try placing them in "hot" water so the pressure in the can goes up :) , awsome work as allways ofc

Well done, I enjoyed watching this and am looking forward to seeing the progress. I've done a few 'ok' rattle-can jobs in the past, but the application of the Simoniz Tough Paint and the use of Tak rags are great tips and I'll be using them in future. Keep it up!
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 7 жыл бұрын
Hey Ralphy, its right to apply all the same care and principles to a rattle can paint job as it is to a proper spray-gun job..Tak rags, wax n grease remover, correct abrasives, etc etc, thats the way you end up with a really good result, because as you probably know, the delivery of the paint is a minor issue, its the prep that makes a good finish aye.?

Hi Abouzar, good to hear from you as ever.. think of it this way, a rattle can is just a paint delivery method...as long as you apply all the same preparation and care that you would when using a spraygun, then you'll get the same result..!

Hey Delboy, it looks awsome even it's just a simple rattle can spray! Great job and yes it all comes done to prep prep and prep! Love how it's looking rite now and I can't wait to see how it's gone turn out soon I have a small question I have replaced my claps on my water hoses of the cooling system with some shiny new ones from samco, pro brand etc and good quality gear but....2 weeks ago I have mounted them at the Same tencion from the old ones Now I clean my bike every week and check up my stuff,and I saw a small drop of green cooling liquid on one of the tubes So I went to do the inspector Morse thing and found out that all the new clamps where all super loose and they weren't holding on well! Now all redone etc but I don't understand how they just got so loose! Of course the tubes set with hot and cold condition so they expand and shrink but the clamps got so loose that I worried a bit Any info or perhaps any personal opinion? Thank you Steven
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Steven. You're right indeed, Samco hoses are clips are about the best on the market... maybe you just didnt do them up tight enough mate... you said you "mounted them at the same tension", so you mean you screwed them up to a torque setting... or was it just be 'feel'... either way buddy... its no ha,r to just nip them up a bit more and see if they stay put... you should tighten hose clips until the hose itself just starts to 'squidge' a but under the clip.. then the thread on it is under tension and should stay where it is.... Give that a go buddy, you'll probably find they are fine..! Hope that help fix it... let me know how you get on mate.. take care.. del.

Any particular reason you prefer to use a spray can rather than a compressor-based spray gun? Easier to use? Less waste? Or because it's a base coat, a spray can is acceptable? Cheers.
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Richard, for a few coats of base black, cans are all i need buddy.. the minimum quantity of neat paint i can buy is 1/4 liter.. and thats 5 times what i needed for this, plus i would have had to buy thinners with it, and hardener... so its a lot of grief for just base coat, we'll do the rest with proper equipment though...

I'm also on need of some tips for my wheels cos they're all chipped and blistered so I look forward to seeing that video. My bike's paint is looking very tired. I suppose that's wot happens when it's used everyday no matter what the weather. As of yet I don't think you have done a video on how to keep the paint on our bikes fresh and I hope that will be coming especially after you putting the time and effort to the paint. Good luck bruv it's looking the part already😎😎😎😎
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 7 жыл бұрын
Cheers Ray, sadly mate, the weather can beat the best of paint finishes, all you can do is keep it clean and invest in some T-Cut for a freshen up once in a while... Yes, I'd like to have another go, it's been over 6 months since I nearly smashed the bike up, got so frustrated at how much time, effort and money went into no fruitage and it's hard to believe it was simply because the surface was too smooth for the paint to adhere. By the way Del, I plastic welded the throttle tube and it was fine but have bought a speed triple twist grip, which is installed. I wasn't happy in the back of my mind about the repaired one, no real idea how strong the weld was although it did do over 100 miles and was working great but on inspection, it was wearing quick. Thought I'd update you, have a good day.

Beautiful work as always boss. Just out of curiosity though, with all you spend on paint and primer, wouldn't it have paid off by now to just pick up a spray gun, small compressor, and a moisture filter ? Even adding the cost of some 1x's and some plastic for a small paint booth, seems like it would have paid off by the bulk primer and quarts of paint. Rather then all the cans. Or no ?
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 7 жыл бұрын
Good point well made Moto... but in real terms, its still cheaper this way...This tough black paint is so cheap, that 12 cans of paint cost me £59, and i used just two of them on the whole basecoat job...neat paint, in even half liters comes in at about the same money, and ill need thinners for it on top...but i still have 10 cans left, Thats it for the black now, its just some art work which will be mostly air brush and pin line paint.. and then a few coats of clear (which will be from a spray gun, and we will have to sheet the place out with plastic lol) Ill paint the wheels with two more cans, and the fork bottoms maybe a bit more.. so this whole job wont have cost me even £25 in paint, plus the bill to the artist... the other 7 or so cans will last me ages for all those little jobs that need a lick of satin black, things like brackets and little fabrication jobs etc... I know its always better to spray a job with a spraygun if you can.. but i dont do enough of it to justify all the mess and setup.. Good point though buddy.

@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 5 жыл бұрын
Drew, i would always use the factory paint as a base coat / primer, you only need to strip it all off if its badly damaged of pealing off already... its going t be tough and rock hard already, and like you suggested mate.. just sand it back so its baby smooth and you can paint over it... if you go through to bare metal in any small places.. then just "spot prime" that bit with some regular primer first..! Good luck buddy, hope it goes well for you. Del.

Hi Del, just watching this one for possibly a 3rd time, and noticed that the datatag number was on the front mudguard. I assume you didn't need/want to transfer the owner details to keep it current?
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Ian.. I dont want to be derogatory about Datatag, but TBH its a practically useless system now days.. the point of it was to mark parts so they cannot be broken up and sold off... it made something like a mudguard unique to your bike only.. and with this paintjob, i think ive done that already... and datatag numbers can simply be painted over anyway.. the paperwork i got with the bike is way out of date too, probably still in the name of the first owner lol.! Hope you;re well mate, Del.

quick question, how do you deal with the paint particles that gather while you paint all over the garage ? or do you not because its a garage :P also... I really like your garage setup :P shame it isn't a bit bigger for a bit more room, but its nice that you have it setup so nicely. Can't wait to design and setup a garage like that one day :D

Hey buddy... if you watch at about 14:20 for a few seconds, you can see the overspray blowing out the door, i have a fan running behind me that takes about 90% of the particles out of the garage, and the rest falls as dry dust in the surfaces and floor.. i just wipe that up later... Thank you for your kind word,s i also wish i had a bit more space, but we have set it up to make the most of the room we have... take care. .Del.

Hi Delboy I have been watching your videos for sometime now. Currently my first project bike xv535 and have everything disassembled. I have a couple of questions regarding primer etc I know you are using the tough paint as your primer. For wheels, bare metal frame , bare metal tank , fork legs what do you recommend in terms of primer, filer , top laquer. I want to do satin blue fender and tank with everything else satin black. Do you recommend using etching primer on the bare metal with a filler then satin colour with satin laquer? Or what isthe layers of paint I need to use. It's a bit unclear on the net regarding the paint type process I need to use. Keep going with the videos.
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Richard, good to hear from you buddy... In a case like yours, ir pays to just keep it simple, use a regular metal primer to cover all the bare steel and filler.. then a few layers of your chosen base coat...after a day to dry out and 'sink", give it all a quick flat down to make a smooth keyed layer to topcoat.. be careful not to go through the paint to the primer or metal... then once you';re ready, layer up 4 good coats of your chosen top colour, 15 minutes between coast for it to flash off... then finally, do four coats of a cleat lacquer to make it all sealed and done.... then after a week, you can flat it all down with 1200 grit paper, and compound it up to a cool shine.... Hope that helps buddy.. good luck... Del.

Hi thanks for your detailed reply. When would you use etching primer? can you use this over building primer? Will find you to send you a pic when it is done, will be a while because it is in bits on my garage floor. good luck keep making such good videos, extremely detailed, well done.
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 6 жыл бұрын
Hi again Richard... just to answer your "etch" primer question... thats mostly good for smooth metal that you can't sand and rough up to make a good key.... the chemical base in the etch primer forms a really good bond with the metal and helps it stick better... but if you can rough up the metal surface with some sand paper, then you can just use regular primer.. and regular primer over filler too, like i said Etch primer is mostly developed for bare metal.. Hope that helps you chap.. Del.

After fully curing, about 3 months, it's fine, but not constant dousing in fuel as that would damage even factory paint in the long run.

reflective surfaces make it for easy LIDAR guns used by police, just saying the more flat your bike is the harder it is for them to get a reading... being turbo.... just saying.... lol.... tinted headlight and flat black 0 reflective surfaces (but then again you wouldnt speed on a turbo bike right?)
