I'm so glad to know this happens to even good goat keepers. The literature attributes my itchy girls to "unclean conditions" & "neglect". This was a major punch in the stomach. All my girls are about to kid so I'm really down and a bit panicky. Thinking I've been neglectful in any way doesn't help either. Our vet is ok for emergencies, but not really great for goat issues. So here I am, trying to learn (even after 5 years of goat keeping). We are also right on the edge of winter, and honestly it has been mild and wet. Lots of barn time so I'm really thinking the creepy crawlers are just smart in wanting to also be warm and dry. My girls just so happen to bump into them, not that I have done something neglectful. Bring so close to kidding, they are a bit pale, not dangerous, but they always perk back up a week or so after kidding. With a parasite stress, can I supplement iron to make sure the unborn and the mommas are ready & safe for delivery? Thanks for the advice.

Thanks! I was #1 scratching my head as to how our goats got them, and #2 feeling guilty I didn’t know sooner. We had 2 goats and 1 lamb drop overnight without any clear signs of distress in 3 years. This time, our fainter had twin girls a day after their big brother dropped out of the blue. They are teeny tiny, and mom had a Prolapsed rectum, so we pulled them after a couple days, due to mom being so weak. Which lead us to finding the lice on the poor newborn kids! After walking and treating them all, mom and babies are reunited and doing well! We treated the rest of our flock as well.

I got lice in my herd in the spring from bringing in a new goat. By the time I figured it out, my goats had anemia. I tried to use DE and tea tree, but ended up getting scared that it wasn't working fast enough and treated with pour on ivomec. I also got some python dust. I treated the goats twice with the ivermectin and then used DE and python dust in their bedding. I also dust them about once a week with DE for maintenance and so far I haven't found anymore eggs or bugs. I also read that if you put DE in their feed, it stays in their poop and the flies stay away...I don't know how well it works but I'll be trying it this spring/summer!

This is NOT true... Yes, humans can get goat lice. I know this to be a fact....!!! When I was a teenager my aunt had goats and WE ALL ended up with them. I know this because we went to the doctor, for treatment and this is what the doctor said and that we had to use a special medicine to kill them. It my be rare for humans to get them, but it can happen.

You can spray it on undiluted. And use the lice comb to brush out the lice and nits. Remember, the vinegar is mostly to loosen up the glue that holds them on to the hair. You can read more about it here if that's helpful: alifeofheritage.com/farm-living/goat-lice/

I was talking to a friend of mine today (she also has minis, one in labor as we speak!!) And she laughed out loud when I told her your philosophy on teleporting lice!! It's bad enough that we have a foster child that came to us in January of 19 (we are currently in the middle of adopting :)) and she had lice when she first came to us. Between her and our bio daughter, they passed it back and forth, I ended up getting it, on and on for about 8 months before I finally got a handle on it. Now my poor goatie kids have it from goodness knows where? You're right though, I'll get a handle on it, now that I know the importance of being vigilant and not slowing down until it is certainly gone. Your tips are great. I knew about DE but the ACV trick is great too. I'm starting treatment tomorrow, in addition to their selenium and copper doses. They are gonna hate me tomorrow but love me in the end. Haha!!

How often do you change bedding while they have lice? Also, how often do you do this treatment plan? We are at a loss as to what's wrong with our goats. We have 2 female 5 month old pygmy's. About a week and a half ago they started acting very strange. Twitching alot, stomping, scratching, and biting. We honestly can barely find any hugs on them. Very few and none of them look exactly like lice. We've done your treatment once and changed bedding and sprinkles DE everywhere. They aren't as social as they were a week ago and stay in their shelter most of the time. Any ideas? I'm so worried something is seriously wrong;
@DelcifromALifeofHeritage
@DelcifromALifeofHeritage 3 жыл бұрын
It's hard to say exactly what's going on from long distance. It could be something like mites. They are not easy to spot because they live under the skin and usually require a skin plug to determine that it is mites. I really do like to try to do things as naturally as possible but sometimes, it's important to use chemicals to make sure that the parasites are actually gone. I would look into trying to identify if it's lice or mites or something like that. You can read more about it here: www.tennesseemeatgoats.com/articles2/mites.html After a chemical treatment, I could change the bedding and hopefully, that gets it all gone!
@healthfromtheinsideout7791
@healthfromtheinsideout7791 3 жыл бұрын
Neither goat looks to have any sort of skin irritation, missing fur or anything mentioned in the article. I'm assuming since we can't be 100 percent sure that we will need to get a vet out to assess.
