Same here in Western Australia. It's hard to find a place that's not brick. And most builders here refuse to buid wooden or plasterboard homes because of the white ants. I know someone who had to sign an agreement for a shorter structural integrity warranty because they wanted their internal walls to be plasterboard instead of brick. The builder wasn't happy about it.

@@billyplaysroblox5904 Probably is, it seems pretty primitive to buy land in Aus. My bf's cousin is lot/house hunting there and they basically have to camp on/outside of the lot and be the first one physically there+being the highest bidder to have a chance. I think land is perhaps more expensive than the house itself.
@OrWhatWeHave
@OrWhatWeHave 3 жыл бұрын
Australia has an incredibly urbanised population, and most people want to live in the 2 or 3 major cities. The effect of this is that most land in a half-decent location already has a building on it, so buying unoccupied land within a reasonable distance from a major city centre is pretty bloody expensive for sure.

A dog door was a game changer for our dog. Hes 10 and weve only lived in this house for a year. I was so worried. It took him forever. And occasionally if he goes out and the flap sticks out instead of falling flat he'll wait there. So ill have to lift it with my foot (never fails im getting ready when it happens) and then tell him its okay to come in. Hes such a sweet boy. As far as doors inside though. He owns the house. And will go into every room if the doors open.

My weakness in the sims is planning bathrooms. When they're a reasonable size, I'm gucci, I'll plan it fine. When it's small and like 4-6 tiles, nah, I can't like where do you put the toilet when you can't fit a shower?! Basically, bathrooms are hard to build/plan when they're small for me...
@alexisthompson6310
@alexisthompson6310 3 жыл бұрын
I keep mine so generic most of the time for that reason lol if they’re 6 tiles, there’s a shower/tub combo in the “back” taking up 2 tiles and making the floor space a 2x2 square, then put the toilet and a sink (the kind with a cabinet or without) on the same wall, so that there’s a walkway directly to the shower (it’ll be about 1 tile by 2) and you’re good to go lol
@Montisaquadeis
@Montisaquadeis 3 жыл бұрын
for the smaller ones tub+shower combos tend to come in clutch for me personally. Also most of the houses I have lived in have had small bathrooms so its rather easy to get use to a certain layout because of that LOL. AKA little to no counter space the toilet shoved up next to the bath with the sink shoved next to the toilet and the door next tot he sink. With the ability to alt place doors now you can easily fit one in a 2x3 room aka 6 tiles.

I’m also Australian and in my humbled opinion, some houses that are put together with cheap materials can be more expensive than if you were to build one yourself with good materials because some houses are built to sell meaning they are put together for normally about $200 000 but sold for over $1 000 000 and then their value will go down quickly as the cheap materials begin to wither. Then again, I’m from Brisbane and it might be different in Melbourne. Another tip is that if you do end up building a house, make sure that it’s the kind of house that goes up in price over time rather than down. Then if you want to sell, you will make money and it would be easier to find a house that you can afford. Hope this was helpful in some way! I love your vids and have an amazing morning, afternoon or evening, whatever time it is currently for you. ❤️

Deli, I'm busy building this and I love how it is minimalistic, modern, clean lines, with beautiful wood tones throughout that brings a lot of warmth into the property and makes it feel more cosy - honestly this home is my dream - just please not the expensive price tag attached. I sort of remember James building something similar. I look for homes with floor plans now to recreate in the sims. Apart from the stone arches we got from the star wars pack, I'm really struggling to think of stone arches for this. Oh it comes with a video of the home and I totally fell in love with it. Linked it in my reply because youtube does not like links in the original comment.

Ok, I have 2 small preschoolers and my mum has polished concrete in her “games room” it’s a open plan mini house, with a kitchen, dining room, lounge room, bathroom and lots of play space. My kids have been running/ playing on polished concrete since birth. Personally, I love it. It’s durable, easy to maintain and clean. Kids make messes, drop things, so it’s less likely to break like a tile, or warp / dint like floating floorboards. If I could get my husband on my side, we would get polished concrete in our home.
@michaelbrown8571
@michaelbrown8571 3 жыл бұрын
Due to their high thermal-mass, concrete floors are ideal to be heated by an underfloor heating system. Concrete provides quick heat-up times and retains heat well, even storing the warmth produced by solar gain, making a heated polished concrete floor a great option to improve the comfort and warmth of your home.

Our home building budget was $450k in the US (Arizona). Building custom was JUST out of our price range BUT we are a family of 6 (me, my husband, my mom in law and 3 kiddos) so we want 5 bedrooms. We are in the process of building an eco-friendly new home and it came in under budget at $430k including land and a few upgrades. You do have to remember that you will need to set up sewer, water and electric, so I recommend getting a lot that has all of that set up even if it's a little more expensive. It will save money on your bottom line! It is so satisfying to watch a home be built from the ground up!! Our foundation was poured last week and our framing is going up next week hopefully!!! I have built our floor plan, too :)

Not gonna lie, I have been obsessed with having an inner courtyard with trees & foliage, rocks and water in a house most of my life. When I was young I had a dream about a donut-shaped house that was basically all glass facing an inner courtyard, but very few windows on the outside. In my dream it was raining, and there were sliding glass doors in all the rooms that opened into the courtyard, so nature was a part of every space in the house. I built that house immediately the first time I played Sims 1, and I have been building versions of it ever since. So even though your dream house is fairly simple, it really appeals to me. I hope you get your house someday. :)

I am an architect, and because you were discussing the concrete floor, i just wanted to say that, it actually makes sense in terms of sustainability. A concrete floor can act as a thermal storage, which means that if it gets enough sun exposure in the day, at night time it can radiate back the heat like floor heating without any energy consumption. And since you are in Australia i guess the courtyard is facing the north, so the interior will get more sunlight during the colder months and warm the space up. Alternatively , during warmer periods, concrete will get colder during the night, and cool the space up during the day. Wood is more of an insulator so it will not have the same effect. Irrelevant with the sims gameplay but i just wanted to comment. Love your videos btw 😊

I’m not sure if it works out the same in Australia as it does in the US but, it’s always an option to buy a foreclosed home for cheap, tear it down, and build a new home on the property. It can be cheaper than buying the land + paying the cost to possibly have to clear the land, then building new construction.

Houses like this and similar are super common in Queensland and also super affordable! Almost all my friends (we are aged 19-22) are all either saving for a house or own a house! It's only not that expensive in Queensland. You need around a 25-30k deposit and can get a brand new home (built for you). They are all 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms with everything you were speaking about being worried about adding to the price! I'm extremely extremely lucky to be currently in the process of building a first home in New Zealand (cheaper than Aus for sure, but perhaps similar enough in terms of styles and material costs). Here's a few things I've learned along the way: - A square/rectangle house is much, much cheaper than a U-shape because it requires less cladding on the outside of the house! - Wood cladding is far more expensive than bricks (at least here?) so we had to go with bricks with some cedar wood accents for contrast - Hipped roofs are the cheapest because, again, less cladding is required on the outside of the house as compared to gable or mono-pitched roofs - Carpet is the cheapest flooring! Far cheaper than wood/tiles/wood-look flooring (so sad) - Big windows and sliding doors are defs where it's worth spending money! - Eco-friendly fireplaces are so expensive, so we had forgo that! - Attic space and storage cupboards are awesome - Look up some Aussie building companies, they usually have a collection of house plans on their websites (not the architectural drawings, but floor plans, sizes and cost estimates. I went through a huge phase building heaps of these on the sims before we finally chose a plan to work from haha)

Long term , a metal roof is probably cheaper than other options (at least other options that are typically used in the US like asphalt shingles), because they hold up longer, usually. Also, going with a white or light-colored roof is much better than black, because it is a much better insulator (since it reflects, rather than absorbs light) so will keep utility costs down and be more environmentally friendly.

Hey Deli! Don't over estimate the costs of building! My partner and I (22 & 21) are building in the outer suburbs of Brisbane and honestly we've upgraded ALOT of things and our whole house and land combined is alot less than you think it would be. Definitely if you are interested in building start looking at some builders or land OUTSIDE of Melbourne, get quotes etc. The things that you were talking about (large windows, double basins) really don't cost that much extra. ... Plus if you guys do build you know we would all LIVE for you to document the process 😉

Concrete is also dusty, I agree it looks nice but even polished can add dust to the home. So I would def recommend the floating floor. Cost effective and can look super nice.

My dad was always keen on the idea of having all of the plumbing on one wall, no hallways (wasted space), and square floorplan, rather than rectangular (no cut-outs, because he thought all of those extra corners drove up to cost), and raised foundation, so you could get under the house to make repairs.

We just bought a house and I immediately took the floorplans and built it in the sims and my mom and I put the furniture in the house that we actually have so we know what we can do in there. We used to live in a flat all our lives. First time living in a house and I feel so blessed to have the opportunity to get that experience. (Houses in germany are expensive, so keep that in mind that we took a long time to afford it)

Hey, not sure if you are aware but brick and concrete (and appliances) in walls can seriously mess with WiFi signals - if you are building, that’s not a problem because you can plan empty wire conduits for hardwiring your internet in rooms that are too insulated from your WiFi location. (Or plan to use a mesh system for your internet) Wood floors are fantastic but keep in mind they do require some upkeep with pets - you want a good seal and regularly use a wood floor product. I’m not sure what insect/critter factors are a specific consideration where you are but keep that in mind, your builder might have ideas. I LOVE the large overhangs on my roof, it saves my so much work on my windows and outside wall because any splash back from rain doesn’t hit the walls/windows - but I know in some areas large overhangs attract certain pests.

Polished concrete is very common here in my country, or was back when I was a kid... So as someone that fell multiple times on polished concrete growing up is not that much worst than falling anywhere else.. lol. As well, as someone that has a kid in their house (my almost 3yo niece), I know how messy the floor can get and I think any wood floors would require a lot of maintenance to prevent damage for at least the first 5 years of a tiny human's life. :) (as well as light non-easy to clean furniture lol). Love the build!!

The trick is to buy cheap land and get a storage unit. Slowly and I do mean slowly start purchasing all the materials and fixtures you need until you have all your stuff for your house. Saves a lot and you can get the things you want when they go on sale over time

It's really interesting hearing ur veiw on building. I am in Australia and live 5 hrs away from you. We r just over the SA border and our city is not metropolitan like Melbourne or Adelaide but it's a decent size. I do home loans and many of my customers building have got house and land packages for 300k-400k (That includes the land and building the house) also the S.A. government offer 15k for first home owners who build. I don't know prices in Melbourne, as property prices would be more but definitely look at Victoria's first home owners grant and 'house and land' packages :)

Something super useful is also to buy a cheap property that can be built on, because after the basic renovations it becomes a life goal to keep building on it. It's usually cheaper and more doable, but there is the issue of possibly being renovated and built on constantly lol

Deli talking about empty storage, it's been TWO years of constant decluttering for me and I FINALLY had an empty closet under the stairs. We painted it and turned it into our son's "clubhouse." Empty space used to scare me, but it's so nice now!

Love the idea of a courtyard garden but your lot would need to be facing the right way, you really need it to be north facing (I assume for Australia, south facing where I am in the U.K.!) to get sun when it’s so sheltered on three sides

Hearing all this talk of how expensive bricks are surprises me. Here in Western Australia bricks are the norm. Getting a house not made of bricks is strange to me. When my hubby and I built 3 years ago every builder we looked at only appeared to offer bricks. Our place has 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, 1 powder room, an Office, Open living space, Games room, Home theatre, and an activity room (aka kids play room). Our house is massive (I even had a 4m long walk in wardrobe) and it only set us back just under $600k including the land. Building isn't as bad as people think. At least not as bad here in Western Australia.

Hi Deli, I love the way you build Sims houses and your aesthetic style. I know you get thousands of suggestions for builds so feel free to ignore this one but I think it is a bit different and could be fun. I always struggle with making houses for my Sims - I'm not like a family player or a role player; mostly I powergame to create a world-famous, rock-climbing, tomb-raiding astronaut wizard who has a side gig creating symphonies, masterpiece paintings and uh... knitting I guess. So the challenge is building a suitable house in a single cohesive style and including all those weird, huge and/or ugly skill building items like the rocket ships, the telescope, the climbing wall from Fitness, a cauldron, a robotics station etc and making them look good... or as close to good as it is possible to make some of them. In order to not make the house cost hundreds of thousands right from the start I thought an interesting way to do it would be build a base house and then use the room system to make a bunch of "modules" that seamlessly slot on to the house and expand it - like a workshop, a gym, a science lab, etc. This may well be impossible but I think it could be fun to try and if anyone can do it then I think you have the skills to do it!

That's a beautiful house and it would be a dreamhouse for me too because it's right up my alley. The only downside I noticed is that it doesn't include a kid's bedroom. I know that not everyone wants to have children, but I'm pointing it out because you mentioned something in this video about the wooden floor being better for a child.

I really like your idea (from another video) of one room for an office that is divided with a big sliding door in between. My bf and I are sharing a room rn while studying civil eng and I both love sharing it with him but it would be nice to have a bit of a sound barrier on occasion. We are planning on building a house because that's literally what we are studying and I am 100% stealing that idea if we get to that point.

I would love any sort of laundry area! In England it's most common for washing machines to be in the kitchen, so it's really noisy if it's going while you're making food. 😑 Also there's never anywhere factored in to hang it to dry (we don't have a tumble dryer).

With doggie doors, use treats! Give them one initially and then place another one on the other side of the door. If they don’t want to go through yet, you can kinda lead them with the treat in your hand as they go through. It might take a few tries but treats are good motivators lol

Hey ya! You should look into Earth Ships. They're fully off the grid, self-sufficient, and affordable! You can make them out of recycled goods, and essentially turn landfill into a beautiful home! I'm already collecting bottles and old car tyres for mine! I live in Australia, too, and these homes would totally work in our climate :) I hope you get to build your dream home for real one day. If you ever want to pool our money to buy a nice block of land, let me know haha.
