I'm actually kind of upset that with all these various fighting game ports, there was no mention of one of the best original iOS fighting games to ever be delisted, Flappy Fighter.

Surprised to see nobody talking about the iOS port of Street Fighter x Tekken, it was a genuinely impressive feat for a touch screen. I remember it looking stupidly crisp for a mobile game at the time, and the the local Bluetooth multiplayer was surprisingly functional. Check it out sometime!

I had that game. The other street fighter game always updated it with newer characters. Sadly I think it was just you and me who bought this one and Capcom/Namco ignored it.

You're absolutely right, these were my gateway into fighting games as a whole. Back in 2013/2014, I was a kid with an iPhone 4 who relied on GBA emulation and mobile versions of fighting games because I was on vacation in Ecuador and couldn't play these games on console yet. I played the mobile versions of SFII (which also had Champion Edition and Hyper Fighting), SFXTK, SFIV, and MVC2.

I played so much of that MvC2 port, like I actually could do small neat combos with the normal controls and unlocked everything in a few days. also put an insane amount of time into KoF XIII and SF4 ios ports back then... was better cause I had someone else to fight against locally was my weird way to get into fighting games besides when I found SF4 AE for $10 at Gamestop

The iOS version of MvC2 was how I played it as a kid since I didnt have a Dreamcast, a PC capable of emulating it, nor was able to buy the 360/PS3 versions that were delisted. It and UMK3 were the best way to kill time on the way home from my freshman year of highschool

Great video! Those MK3 models look surprisingly a lot like their 2D counterparts. Also thanks for bringing up KOF 2012! I thought that game was delisted, I don't know when they put it back on but now I can play it again :D
@nicholasfokas42922 жыл бұрын
While I first played it in an arcade at four years old, I grew up with that mvc2 port for a number of years. I rarely got passed the first match, but I still played the hell out of it anyways. It’s arguably what got me into fighting games. I also remember the game running a lot faster too so maybe it’s a glitch that occurred over time due to the delisting and aging of the game overtime or something. I think it’s based off the ps2 version because of the sound effects and the title screen.

This was a cool topic. I liked what you said about that SF4 version. Anytime a handheld fighting game simplifies things while not losing the core feeling of a beefier console/PC/arcade fighter, I am always impressed. Been that way since Samurai Shodown on the Game Boy & Gear. It's cool to see which games succeeded and which ones stumbled here, and why. I really should check out more mobile fighters; Vita Fighters looks pretty sweet. I've barely played fighters on mobile, but the ones I have enjoyed more were mobile-specific ones like Final Fighter and Shadow Fight 3 (I'm waiting for the console/PC version of Metal Revolution though), so I'm gonna have to look into Vita Fighters. I've also seen a video on why something called Flappy Fighters is apparently an awesome mobile fighter thanks to its controls tailored specific to touchscreens, so... I guess I should play more mobile fighting games, lol.

KOF 2012 Is pretty much THE standard for mobile fighting game ports. It really strikes a good middle ground between a simple control scheme but still having the mechanical depth of the game it's based on. They even still give an option to use actual normal commands, to the point that when I finally got my hands on MAME and kof2002 I knew a bunch of the commands already just through experimenting. It truly really got it right so early on lol.

One of those annoying ironys it was only when everything switched to a service based free to play type model that games were given the proper amount of attention but of course that came with the cost of games that were essentially slot machines except you can only put money in and you could never win anything.

it's just speculation, but i bet the slowdown in all these mobile ports is probably an intentional design choice. these games - particularly Marvel vs Capcom 2 - play pretty fuckin' fast. since you're already battling with the touch controls too, maybe the developers thought slowing the game down a little would be a good idea for giving players more time to act/react.

It’s funny, the smartphone market has some powerful hardware to have older games run on them without issue (especially Apple’s A-series & it’s derivatives). I’d love to be able to download a perfect port of the 2D Street Fighter series on my iPhone (current iPhones BTW), sync an Xbox or PlayStation controller (now super easy & supported Apple/Android), & go ham. & yes, the smartphones today can also be wirelessly (or wired) connected to a TV easily. I’d also love ports of the Arcade versions of the Mortal Kombat series too.

KOF 2012 brings back memories. I played it a lot to kill time in high school, right around the time I got into the classic Neo Geo games. The combos were easy to understand and surprisingly fun to do on a touch screen. I remember nearly unlocking the entire gallery before my parents bought me a new phone and I said goodbye to my old one. I've yet to play the actual console version of XIII but in the meantime this was a close enough substitute. Surprisingly really good for what it was.

You know, it's kind of ironic, at the time fighting games on mobile were a novelty and little more (still are on the official markets) but because modern phones tend to be emulation powerhouses, I actually use mind as my main method for playing fighters away from my PC, just link up some bluetooth controllers or plug my stick in through a usb-c converter and just have a go with some dreamcast era fighters

I remember fondly playing SF4 for iOS (the OG without online mode) and when I knew Volt was releasing I purchased in a heartbeat on day 1. Online was smooth and we had a pretty big community on the Line app and in TouchArcade forums. Back in the day I was a top player with Guile as a main and without using the easy modes (autoblock and easy specials). I even got my spot as top 1 for a while, but it was just so fun to boot up and play online with a lot of different players or entering tournaments ran by the community. So it was a shame when CE came out with more characters but unplayable online after, a problem still present even after a few years of the release date. Hopefully we get something as good as Volt or better in the future, since I think Volt was the definitive version even today.

I loved that UMK3 mobile port! I used to play it at my old gas station job all the time, wish it was still available. I love the low poly models. I used to play OG UMK3 on snes as a kid, but that was one of my last fighters that I played for years, until MK9 in 2011. Since then I've been way more into fighters and even run a podcast on them with my gf called Wake Up Three, but this weird mobile port was definitely part of what got me back into them. Love it.

Very well done video 😎👍🏾 playing the Japanese DC version of MvC2 was even more of a pain because it had three different types of points to use, and it relied on players going to the arcade to stick their VMU in the cabinet and play in order to get one of the types of points that way. So if you lived in the US, your best bet if you had that version was to just find a way to download the save file with everyone unlocked. Otherwise, you'd only be able to unlock maybe 10 of the hidden characters 😂

@Ekraelum2 жыл бұрын
My guess about the price inflation in SoulCalibur is that they actually added the full roster later on, or at least that's what I know. I was like 12 when the port came out so I grabbed an APK instead, and it had only the default roster. Years later after it got delisted, I downloaded a random APK and it had all the characters. Idk if they actually added them in later on which caused the price inflation, or if the APK I got was modded lol. But like the mobile port didn't had any way to unlock more content, so idk. That's the reason I always prefer the Dreamcast version.
