Delius's 'Walk to the Paradise Garden' comes from his opera "A Village Romeo and Juliet." It's an evocative entr'acte that the published score reveals to be in Sir Thomas Beecham's arrangement of the music, though his name is seldom mentioned as being the arranger whenever this piece is played. It was performed at the Last Night of the 2000 Proms by the BBC Symphony Orchestra under Sir Andrew Davis.

Davis plays this score like it needs to be played, allowing the sheen of the strings to come forward at just the right moments. I'm so glad he started recording Delius for Chandos. I heard him say in an interview that he was a late "convert" to Delius.

I was in the middle of the arena for this, as a young man. Second half of the LNOTP and over 6000 people in party mood, yet you could hear a pin drop at the end. We were transfixed. An amazing moment.

So glad you witnessed this. This recording is a default go-to for me, if merely for the reason you state. How perfectly lovely. There must have been one giant breath. Pure God. ❤

Sublime serenity. Were it so to walk in such a garden; this piece of music will have to do.

This particular "paradise Garden" is, in fact, not a garden but a pub!

lovely. sometimes the most revolutionary music is the quietest--it makes a universal point at a pianinissimo--Delius often does this....

very wise observation Windstorm1000 ! Time stands still with Delius in his quietest moments. And at those moments there is a magic that is at once assuring and uncomfortable. It's all about the transience of life. Knowing/sensing the tragic truth that the paradise WILL be lost and loving it all the more for that.

I just watched my mother pass from life at 100 years and feel this transient element so deeply. Well said.

This may have been included in the opera, but the title comes from the name of a local "pub" he would walk to. Hence, "A walk to the 'Paradise Garden'".

From Wikipedia: "At a local fair, Sali and Vreli buy rings. Sali mentions an inn, the Paradise Garden, where they can dance all night, and they go there." Are you sure this is anything to do with a Delius local pub? Please supply a source.

Lest we forget, it is The Walk to the Paradise Gardens. Puts a bit of a different slant to the whole idea.
