Tip for the bar feeder: if you're loading even remotely shiny material (like aluminum). Scuff up to ends or paint them black. The "optical" sensor relies on a reflective piece of tape rather than a separate emitter and receiver. Sometime it doesn't sense the end of the bar and will push out way farther than it's supposed to and wipe out your tools. Ask me how I know. I have videos to prove how it doesn't pick up the ends of the bars. Just be aware. Also, deburr the ends of you bars or they shred the plastic spindle liners

@@Eggsr2bcrushed It is! Its a major safety/reliablility problem. I posted a PSA about it on the Haas CNC Operators Facebook group and several others have had similar issues. It would be an easy fix by just having a separate receiver on the opposite side of the bar. Probably wouldn't cost much more either. Pretty sure I even told our HFO about it. I should add Clear materials to the list too such as acrylic. If it's tubing you can roll up a piece of paper or something but it's still annoying to have to do that and then have to stop the machine and remoye it.

I would never use plastic spindle liners, they are going to get so beat up. Better off just making your own set of aluminum ones.

Considering a bar fed machine without a chip conveyor belt, was an option to you? That's insane. This machine will run all day. Who has time to remove chips, after all that, assuming the machine doesn't get full in the process? Conveyor belts should basically be standard. I see no reason not to get them. Far easier to wheel out the full chip bin, and replace, than scoop out the machine. Looks pretty nice though. Wonder what parts are going on there. :)

Bar feeder doesn't necessarily mean loads of chips; could be making parts that have low material removal. I'm thinking parts like a rod threaded on both ends, like hold-down stud or spacer.

Hey Jay, great video. Quick question though, you are primarily a Haas mill, Doosan Lathe shop. What drove you to switch to a Haas lathe? Was it cost? It can't be performance. As an owner considering buying a lathe, your insight would definitely help? Thanks in advance

I too would be interested cause I was looking at haas, xyz, cutwell, doosan, hardinage and a couple of others but wanted to lean towards haas st15 but it didn't look as rigid as a doosan and the doosan had a bigger spindle bore 81mm , programming wise it didn't matter what control, but with the whuflu all my potential orders vanished over night so for now will have to carry on with my Harrison alpha.

Well it could be control comparability. I know that I just got a VF-2 and an ST-10 because there was no way I wanted to learn two separate controls at once, and having one source of contact for maintenance is good, so is having consistency in other ways. Or, it could be that this channel platform is worth offering some heavy discounts to, which makes sense considering.

Congrats on the new machine. That means a step forward for you. But why?why haas? The price should be almost equivalent for the Doosan if not lower. Performance wise, you'll never get the same experience with Haas. Yes, it's true that the chip conveyor is another brand, the oilskimmer is another brand an so on, and so what if Doosan takes care of it, meaning as a whole package in terms of service. Best luck and be healthy!

Doosan lathes generally use FANUC control systems. FANUC control systems do not have a dialogue programming module, so they are not as good as Haas in guaranteeing processing safety. I guess this is the reason. Looking forward to the next episode.

Fun video, just had an ST-10 (And VF-2) installed and so a lot of the steps are familiar to me now, having gone thru it. It was amusing how after the machine moving montage and epic music and slowmo just finished, it kicked right back in for the bar feeder all over again. I was half expecting after that there would be another pause and then BAM right back into yet another montage with boxes and accessories. And another kicks in with lunch. And another would kick in with some other stuff. And then it just gets ridiculous after that... Anyway you showed restraint where I would not. The ST30Y with Sub Spindle really does seem like it's just a few details away from being a DS30Y. Is there really any major difference in capabilities besides just the base casting and even then? I'd always assumed that the DS30Y WAS just an ST30Y with the sub spindle option and so putting that on the ST30Y was just getting a DS with a different badge. But it seems like for now at least that there is some distinction with the DS and ST at a base level so its cool to see that it takes up less room. One thing Haas really needs to work on (And I understand why they don't but lets imagine here) is giving relatively up-to-date features of what THIS YEAR MODEL of machine is, and differentiating that from previous year models. Show us what the models look like side-by-side. Give us a feature-by-feature breakdown of why two similar machines might exist and what differentiates them for the nuanced buy. Just knowing that the machine I got (2020 ST-10) doesn't actually look AT ALL like the images on the website is really amusing. Essentially If I looked at the gallery page and fell in love with that design of machine, with the rounded angles and so-on; I'd be surprised when I get it, and it's this geometric box of a thing. That said, I'd seen what the current gen looks like and prefer it, so no real complaints (and I get that we aren't buying these machines for style like one might get a car, otherwise they would offer different colorways and chromed door handles as upgrade options) but still it's really amusing and frustrating that Haas machines are almost sold like year-model vehicles where each couple years is a complete new bodystyle with small refreshes and updates year-to-year, even if they fundamentally share the same bones over long stretches of time. Haas doesn't seem to provide much in the way of "if you haven't looked at a ST-10 in the last few years here's what's new with the latest edition" for any of their machines and it's a missed opportunity in my book.

But I will consider buying/Upgrading Half indexable 24 station BOT turret because when you have live tools and regular turning tools you can Stack the regular turning tool on one station and half index them to open up some spaces for live tools. I wonder why you didnt chose half indexing 24 Station turret. May I ask why you didnt chose half indexing turret?

Don't get 2 different size qg chucks. Im trying to get my boss at work to move away from that because of the space in collets it takes up when doing a wide range in size of parts. It also makes your machine more capable to have qg 80 on both. Actually now that I think about it, the castings on Haas lathes aren't as big as Okuma to where collisions could occur with that.
