Yes, absolutely. I've run both the T9900 and the E8435 on an Inspiron 1545. It doesn't run hot because it's better silicon than the Pentium Dual-Core chips that Dell used in many of these. My battery life improved by 30 minutes when I switched from a T4400 to a T9900.

I've had mine since 2011. Bought it refurbished from Tesco direct in the UK. It has moved house many times with me up and down the country, has been knocked, bashed about and has had a few new keyboards and numerous power supplies. I'm thinking of getting an additional Dell laptop it as I can't deal with the painfully slow speeds, however, it will still be used for the CD/DVD drive. Mine is totally original with the integrated webcam, no updates.

I'm still running one of these in December 2019. It has the original 3 GB of RAM, ancient Celeron processor, and a dodgy but usable replacement battery. I run Linux Ubuntu, and it does pretty well. I don't get very good internet speeds out in the country, so this one can browse the internet slowly, just as good as any newer computer. I did find a deal on a HP Elitebook 820, that should have some better specs. I haven't tried that one out, but nearly anything should be better than the 1545 after this many years. The 1545 just refuses to die. I bought it back in college when I was very broke. It was on a Father's Day blowout sale for $249. I think I got my money's worth out of it.

I'm watching your video on one that shipped from Dell in February of 2010. Of course, I've upgraded pretty much every component of it. It's now running a Core 2 Duo E8435 3.06 GHz, 6GB of DDR2-800, a 240GB SSD, 900p screen, a new 5G-capable wifi card, and I swapped in the silver keyboard from the 1525, which is compatible. This one shipped with Vista, but dual-boots Mint 19 and Win 7 now. Still works great and I expect it will be my everyday laptop for quite a while yet. Mint 19 Cinnamon works wonderfully on a 1545.

That's so cool. I have one that my dad bought for me back in the day. I remember it was on sale at Best Buy for father's day. Mine has 4GB of RAM and the intel core 2 duo processor. It still works, but is pretty slow with Windows 7. At least, it's much slower than my new laptop which is a Dell Latitude E5550 with 8GB of Ram and a newer Intel Core i5 processor (I believe the 2nd generation of Core i5). Maybe I will start using mine again, any ideas on how I can make it run faster?

The other thing I love about my newer laptop, is it has a matte black finish which means it never catches fingerprints, and the display is also matte compared to the inspiron's display which is really shiny.
@johncate9541
@johncate9541 4 жыл бұрын
@@arjunj73 The best upgrade for a 1545, if you haven't done it already, is to replace the slow spinning HDD with a SATA SSD. I gained more performance from this than anything else. Just an inexpensive ADATA 240GB drive did the trick. Maxing out the CPU (quads don't work on a 1545, but any 35W C2D will) improves performance, but the best upgrade is the SSD. I only pimped the heck out of mine just because I could.

Damn this was my first laptop. I also got a crappy chinese extended battery from amazon and you're right, it didn't do anything to the battery life and actually failed about a month later. This cheap flimsy laptop is surprisingly durable. I've dropped it numerous times, spill drinks on it, and one time I got something stuck on the fan underneath and had the CPU running over 100 degrees Celsius for a month before I realized what was going on, and it still worked just fine. I bought a new laptop once the hard drive started failing. I could have just replaced it but this was back before I knew much about computers. This video got me in the mood to dig this old workhorse out and put an ssd in it!

I have a Latitude d630. Edit: this model was my mom's first computer ever. She had the purple one. She bought it so she could do her college work at home. Then. I dropped the computer from a high spot (my dad's gun case,) and it was externally damaged. The charging port on it was screwed up though. Then, she ended up having to borrow a laptop from the neighbors (the one that ended up being mine) and the rest is history!

I still use one, daily. I am watching this video on it. Mine is running windows 10, with 4gb of DDR2 ram, 2ghz Intel Celeron cpu, and a 250gb HDD, and it runs fine. I am still on the original battery, although battery only lasts about a half hour. I have replaced the original HDD which had become corrupted, and the keyboard has been replaced about three times, and one USB port, which got damaged. Oh, and the touchpad no longer works, but that is a Windows 10 issue, as they stopped supplying the driver for this particular touchpad. And I have tried installing a new driver from Synaptics, but no luck. I do use a mouse anyway, so it is no big deal. That aside, it has been the best laptop I have ever owned. I had 2 Acers prior to buying this about 10 years ago, and Acers of that time were just junk. I recently bought an HP budget laptop, with an AMD A9 cpu SOLDERED to the motherboard, and I have just stripped it for parts after just 4 months. Never will I buy HP again. I also just bought a Dell XPS 15 L502X, which has boot problems, so that is packed up to return to the seller, But my Inspiron 1545 has never let me down, ever. It is almost like an old friend, and it will be a sad day when I eventually replace it. Good to see there is another one still working away hard, way past its expected shelf life.

That machine is probably twice as fast and powerful as the machine I use. Still has at least 150,000 more miles in it. The video camera software causing your CD drive to disappear probably has to do with bad UPPERFILTERS/LOWERFILTERS keys in the registry. Common problem, very easy to edit the registry to correct the issue. System Restore rolled the registry back before the change, which is why that worked, but also got rid of the video camera software. No wonder the software was shady. I can't even tell you how many machines I've fixed with the UPPERFILTERS/LOWERFILTERS issue. Touchpads on laptops today are a completely and total joke. It's almost as if they made them useless to force you to buy a touchscreen laptop. Any touchpad that does not have separate buttons for left and right is not a true touchpad. It's junk. That's why an external mouse is well well worth it. Microphones in the screen where the webcams were offered better sound. A lot of times later on they integrated the microphone into the webcam board. The bad news is on older machines they ran a separate microphone cable up inside of the screen, along with the wireless antenna wires and sometimes the LVDS cable, it just gets too crowded. The best way to enhance the performance of what you have now, at no cost, is to reinstall the OS. If you want to dual boot that's fine, but reinstalling the existing OS will make it faster, and give the machine a much better offering of a user experience. The best way to enhance the performance of what you have is to install an SSD in place of the hard drive. For the small amount of money these drives cost today it's probably worth it. The 500GB drive can be turned into an external using an enclosure which could likely be picked up on Amazon or ebay for under 10 bucks. Personally, I wouldn't bother with Tiny 7, it sounds like TOO much has been stripped. XP hasn't been supported in some time. Not that I care if MS has any updates for it, but other programs you probably use such as Google Chrome no longer really support XP. It's the dropping support from other applications that's leading to its demise.
@Dantastic
@Dantastic 7 жыл бұрын
jaykay18 Yes indeed, this machine has quite a bit of life in it, which is why it's staying at my desk to be used for word processing and light tasks. As it turns out, I think I omitted much of my reasoning behind upgrading (due mostly to the video being reshot). I could easily have used this as my daily driver for at least five more years, but like many people, I am underwhelmed by the direction the computer industry is going. Basically I wanted to get a new machine while they still have built-in optical drives, actual USB A ports, touch pads with actual buttons (like you had mentioned). Also, I've been wanting USB 3 ports, a backlit keyboard, an actual graphics card, etc. One of the requirements was also having a hard drive and not an SSD. They're too pricy as compared to hard drives and I don't like the fact that they're pretty much guaranteed to fail after a finite number of cycles that can actually be counted. I know hard drives are guaranteed to fail eventually as well, but they generally last longer.
@jaykay18
@jaykay18 7 жыл бұрын
I've been extremely underwhelmed as well. They've stripped out all the ports, gotten rid of Ethernet on a number of models, relying on wireless only, and figure nobody uses optical media anymore. The majority of laptops I've seen are these "ultrabooks", and there's absolutely nothing ultra about them except the price. They're as thin as a sheet of cardboard, and can't cool themselves to save their own life. Worst is they build them upside-down, so replacing a keyboard requires complete disassembly of the machine, rather than just the removal of the old keyboard and dropping a new one in. I honestly don't know what I'm going to do when forced to buy a new computer. Chances are I'm going to be using old boxes for the rest of my life. I'm a firm believer in old hardware. I think the phrase "they don't make 'em like they used to" comes completely into play here.
@Dantastic
@Dantastic 7 жыл бұрын
jaykay18 It's so true. I suppose you could always look into building your own box. Luckily, there are a lot of power users that generate demand for all of that sort of hardware that OEMs don't wish to include any longer. It seems like PC building is making a comeback. As far as notebooks are concerned though, there's not much hope left there. As much as I hate to admit it, there will come a time when the well-equipped pcs of yesterday will become too obsolete to do nearly anything. I used to be able to have almost 30 tabs open on my browser. Now just opening my yahoo inbox can make the browser freeze briefly due too the webpage being bloated beyond belief.
@jaykay18
@jaykay18 7 жыл бұрын
30 tabs, never! Not even on a fast machine would I think about taxing it like that! An old ex-co-worker of mine many years ago used to leave windows open (this was before tabbed browsing) all the time, and I'd yell at him every day. It's the same idea, applied differently: "Oh, quick, close the door, don't let the heat out", then they leave a hundred different tabs open. Building a box is a possibility, but the motherboards generally don't carry a nice plethora of ports anymore. It really has become the genericized "beige box". Laptops are going to get worse and worse.

Back in 2009, it wasn't too much of an issue, but the amount of processing power that is required just to browse the web now takes it toll.
