A customer shows up with a replacement battery for a "non-replaceable battery" laptop. Okay, pretty easy to do...but the work time doubled because I discovered a totally unrelated problem with one of the left hinge mounts falling apart.

Thanks for the help! I found a hinge mount broken on mine so I wonder if it's a factory QC issue. I'm pretty sure that you don't need to remove the perimeter screws fully. After they unscrew, they felt like they didn't want to come out and it appears that they were designed to be held by the plate when removing the plate. Thanks again!

My latest laptop is identical to this one. I love Dell. Never had a problem with them, either when I was working, (it's all the comp0any would buy), and since retiring. But, going to internal batteries was/is a retrograde step. Very poor design for the sake of saving a small amount of weight and aesthetics which do not really matter in the practical sense. All of my previous Dell laptops have had external plug & play batteries that could be replaced or upgraded without getting a screwdriver out. I wish they'd go back to them.

I don't like it either. Though I will admit that most laptops switching to a unibody-style construction has made it easier to perform servicing that isn't the old standards of "upgrade RAM" or "replace hard drive." Once the back plate is off, everything inside is exposed. The only major beef I have with the new way of building things is that keyboard replacement is now far more difficult and expensive, and people spill trash on keyboards all the time.

Thank you for the great video. Any suggestions for getting out those 3 stubborn screws under the CD drive??? I’m using a 00 Phillips but no luck. Thank you in advance.

Use a #0, not a #00. Always use the largest screwdriver that fits. A #00 should strip the heads on the flat #0 screws.

@@JodyBruchon Thank you! I made the mistake of using the 00 Phillips because I thought that’s what you used for the CD drive screws. Any suggestions if I did strip those 3 little screws??? Yikes, I really thought changing the battery would go okay 🤦🏻‍♀️

I don't recall but the vast majority of my laptop repairs only involve two Phillips screwdriver sizes: #1 (almost all screws) and #0. There are rare occasions that I have to go all the way down to a #00 Phillips though, and a few laptops (older HP business laptops, mainly) use Torx screwdrivers instead of Phillips.

Jody, Can you source a higher capacity battery that would give you longer periods between charges and a longer life? What was the capacity of the battery you took out and the battery you replaced it with?

I honestly don't know. It may be impossible to find a higher capacity for this type of battery because there's no additional space to put more cells. Old batteries that slid into the rear could add more cells by extending downward or backward, but these flat batteries can't extend in any direction.

Did the hinge break because you prised the keyboard section from the side instead of the front? perhaps if you had persevered with the edge that was apparently sticking it would have lifted forward and the hinge would have remained intact.

The hinge won't break just because I pry on the machine. It's the open-and-close motion being repeated hundreds or thousands of times by the customer, often in conjunction with opening by only one side of the lid, that causes the plastic to fatigue and eventually crumble.
