Thank you very much for the video, this is the first laptop I partially disassembled, and while I could figure out the process on my own, sometimes when soomething is held with latches, and you need to use some force, its quite unnerving! So It was helpful to check out your video as a guide. That being said, I am left with two screws, and I have no idea whatsoever what these are for, haha. I thought that perhaps I forgot to bolt the screen, but all 4 screws are in place.

So it looks like to replace the touchpad palmrest you need to pretty much strip the entire laptop.

Hi @John Tucker, I recently had a M2 42mm 1TB SSD added to that extra slot for the SSD but when I check the storage, it is still showing the original 2,5 SATA installed in the system. please can you help explain what is going on there.Thanks

oh and I see it has wifi antennas in the top cover too... Are the cables soldered of do they have plug in connectors?
@johnatucker3
@johnatucker3 3 жыл бұрын
The wifi antennas are clipped to the wireless card and are removable. The wires are soldered to a small plate glued in place in the back cover.

@@johnatucker3 wonderful! Thank you alot for help! Seems like I can handle the repair with almost no tools, except for the borrowed screwdrivers! Do you think it will be a good idea to get a thin, double sided tape for glueing some of the cables to the top cover? And is it advisable to hold the screen cables in place with a bit of electrical tape, or is it better not to, just to give them more room? Do they get at all twisted at least a bit when you open and close the lid?
@johnatucker3
@johnatucker3 3 жыл бұрын
@@Verithiell Honestly you could just use scotch tape; that's what I do for the cables. If you have to remove the wireless antennae you could use some clear thin double-sided tape.

Hi John, thanks for the video. I have the Dell Latitude 5490. I checked Task Manager and found that I currently have a 8GB 2400MHz SODIMM RAM in one of the slots. If I would like to add another 8GB RAM to make it a total of 16GB, do I just buy the same exact 8GB 2400MHz SODIMM RAM stick and place it in the second slot? Would there be any configuration needed?
@johnatucker3
@johnatucker3 2 жыл бұрын
You should be able to occupy the second slot with 2666, 2400, or 2166 with no issue.

Are both laptop models (5480 and 5490) the same? if yes what is the main difference between the two to be given different number?

Aesthetically they are almost identical apart from a few ports. However, here's a comparison between the two: CPU: 5480: i5-7200U 2,5 GHz, i5-7300U 2,6 GHz or i7-7600U 2,8 GHz; 5490: i5-8250U 1.6 GHz or i7-8650U 1.9 GHz. Note that they are the basic speeds without overclocking. RAM: 5480: maximum 32 GB DDR4 at 2133 MHz; 5490: // // // // 2400 MHz. Storage: 5480: HDD 1 TB max or SSD 512 GB max; 5490: HDD and SSD 1 TB max. Display: 5480: HD 14" 1366x768 or FHD 1920x1080; 5490: FHD 14" 1920x1080. Graphics: 5480: Intel HD Graphics 620 or Nvidia GeForce 930MX; 5490: Intel UHD Graphics 620. Connectivity: 5480 and 5490: Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4.2, Ethernet, 4G LTE optional. Ports: 5480: 3 x USB 3.0, HDMI, VGA, RJ45, SD card reader, audio jack; 5490: 3 x USB 3.1 gen 1, same as above but missing VGA. Battery: 5480 and 5490: 4-cell 68 Whr battery or 6-cell 92 Whr battery. Weight: 5480 and 5490: 1,6 kg (3,3 lb) Hope this helps!

Hello ,good morning, is it possible to change the processor of this notebook?
@johnatucker3
@johnatucker3 3 жыл бұрын
A little late.. but no; they are what are referred to as BGA CPUs; meaning they are soldered onto the motherboard via baking process and cannot be removed (unless you are way more skilled than I am with a soldering iron).

does this series of laptops have a problem with top cover? Namely, is it common issue that the hinges get ripped out? My friend has this problem, and I am wondering if it would be better to invest in something the likes of a metal clip that would hold the corners together, or just get the new cover and frame instead. But if its going to get damaged with time anyway, there seems to be very little point, considering alltogether both pieces will cost almost 10% of what the laptop is currently worth

I haven't seen this issue with the newer latitudes 5000 and 7000 series. Definitely seen it with the 3000 series (and the lower end Inspirons).
