I agree that those classic Dell Latitude laptops worked great for Windows XP. It looks like the one in this video still rocks to this day! Cool restoration process!

The D610 was a great work laptop. At my first job, my company had both the D600 and the D610. I had the pleasure of using both models and both were overall reliable and fast when they were new although Dell had to replace the keyboard on the D600 twice. The D600 had better legacy support since I used it to troubleshoot a couple of old IBM machines running Win98 that my company still had. The main laptop was the D610 which is what I used for the, at the time, modern Dell Optiplex machines running XP. The D610 had a much better quality keyboard then the D600 since it never had to be replaced in my experience.

The Dell Latitude D610 is still my main laptop. I just got a new battery for it and upgraded it to an IDE SSD (really an MSATA enclosure) a few months ago. It originally belonged to my elementary school, and I used it through the 4th and 5th grade, when they "upgraded" their systems from XP to 7 in 2014, I refused to give it up, so the IT lady took it and installed a clean copy of XP on it, and told me on the last day of school to stick it in my bag and not say anything. I used it all through middle school, and all through high school, and I just finished a 2 year college program (electrical systems technology) which I used it through as well; after that I rewarded it with the new battery and SSD, and it runs quite well with it. It has the MAX CPU, 2.26 GHz Pentium M, 2GB RAM, and the ATI graphics. That machine went through hell and back (me as a kid was not nice to anything,) and only one screen and 2 keyboards later it is still a very solid machine.

Dell was on a roll with their Latitudes back then. I had a D510 and it was a great machine overall. Even ran Windows 7 very well.

I had one of these back in the day, it would cold boot to the XP desktop in 40 seconds and play HQ (640x480) videos in KZfaq no problem, I loved that laptop.

IIRC, the ATI video means that this was a higher-spec version of the D610. Base version would have been an Intel 915 or thereabouts. I think that you may also have the higher resolution screen.

My cousin, Opa had that same Dell laptop since the 2000s and later gave it to my mom for a few years until it stops working. Needless to say, it was a great computer!

Try reseating the battery. Even a dead one should get you blinking yellow battery light.

These aren't exciting, but they are quite dependable and still usable for some less demanding tasks. I got a D420 for very cheap, put Linux on it and use it for Raspberry Pi and Arduino projects.

I remember these from middle school, then in high school i remember using a newer Dell Latitude and they had Windows 7 x64 but only 1 gig of ram.

The one I have is next to my bed against the wall and is used as a desktop unit. It currently has an uptime going on two years next month. It has everything on it. You can literally make a chart album on it. Better. ;) My point is that it gets used. It isn't just for show. heh heh - Win 7, I upgraded the memory to 4GB years ago. It rocks hard for what it is.

I have one of these, they're pretty good honestly, only issue is the little plastic thingy at the top of the bottom half that pushes down to let the computer know the lid is closed only works sometimes.

there are still ebay sellers selling the battery for dell d610 if you're looking for one.

I picked up the same model last year. The battery is fine Unfortunately the processor does'nt support SSE3 which means a lot of newer XP software does'nt support it, the top is scratched up, screen has a line going through it that comes and goes The The intel wifi card can be an issue with modern routers. It also gets very hot.

The D6xx series were very good machines which were easily serviceable. The E6420 and E6430 were nice as well. Their later offering I am not as fond of.

I agree! The Exx30 Latitudes were the last good laptops from Dell in my opinion. I had an E6420 that was built like a tank but still looked good as well as solid performance. I sold it and got an E5470 which turned out to be a disappointment. The E5470 was still a good laptop but it felt much more fragile compared to my E6420.

My work has the exact same computer. Has XP as we still have to go back to it as some software and hardware is just not compatible with the modern day Operating Systems.

Hey! I got a Latitude D400 myself! Intel Pentium M, 2GB RAM, 160GB Samsung drive. yours is better though as it has DVD drive, mine does not! I think the D400 was low end for the time.
@OverTallman4 күн бұрын
Nah it's just the D4x0 series is the 12" ultraportable/sub-notebook lineup similar to ThinkPad X series. D400/D410 are quite a bit smaller than D600/D610 so there's not enough space for an optical drive. The low end Latitude lineup is the D5x0 series, which later becomes E5xx0 series (up to E5430/E5530).

I think Centrino, is "Intel Evo" in that era 😅. I said this, as seems similar with today's Evo. Or previously "Project Athena". Correct me if wrong. That's what I can say, btw

It's been a long time since I've ever done an OS update on any of the computers I've ever owned. They just stay on one OS and never upgrade to another unless I really need to. Besides, what other OS can match the charm of 98 or XP?
