Today I examine a Dell Laptop that went toe to toe with ThinkPads like the X240. The bottom line is, there is a lot to like, especially the higher spec'd machines.

Much as I love Thinkpad, I have to admit that this laptop seems to be a the better competitor than X240: it has more ports, easier to open up, easier to remove keyboard, better trackpad and 2 RAM slots, the hinges look more sturdy too. I still like my X240 with touch screen a lot though.

People who are ThinkPad fanboys don't seem to realize that Dell have been releasing absolute bangers for years and are often overlooked. Dell not only has a direct competitor for almost every model of ThinkPad but also do the semi-rugged and rugged lines that IBM/Lenovo hasn't ever ventured into.

I'm still super happy with my X240, especially since it has the 1080P touchscreen and pretty much all the bells and whistles, BUT the Latitude E7240 would definitely have been the better choice if I needed 16GB RAM! By the way, BattDepot only had the 24Wh internal battery and the 48Wh external battery in stock when I was shopping for a new battery; with shipping fees, it would've cost $105 (pick-up fee would've been $8 vs $15 shipping, but I would've spent the difference in gas) for both. Lenovo was running a sale plus I had a promo code that got me the 72Wh external battery for only $130, free shipping. (I checked eBay, but that was a no-go because most sellers were based in China or Hong Kong.) When I got the X240, I did a battery gauge reset on both batteries -- the original internal battery still had 18Wh capacity and the original external battery still had 16Wh capacity -- so it made sense to spend the extra $25 to buy the 72Wh 6-cell battery directly from Lenovo and keep the original internal battery, because that meant an overall capacity of 90Wh. Now I get upwards of 12 hours, depending on what I'm doing :-) Thanks again for the rec -- I love my X240!!
@LaptopRetrospective
@LaptopRetrospective 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah the Latitude doesn't have the battery system the X240 does, that's one of a few areas it still comes out on top. Both were expensive at the time but ThinkPad had the advantage of brand I think and people didn't judge it as harshly, much akin to say some MacBooks. Glad to hear your battery adventure ended well and you scored an awesome X240 specimen. I should have a video in the next little bit you might find interesting.

I just bought one from the scrapyard. Not bad except it was a pain to take apart to replace both fan and power jack. Both were damaged or not working.Took me over an hour to dismantle everything. After putting everything together, I left with 2 extra screws.😋 Added dual MSATA 128GB. The 'dead' battery came back to life after installing Windows 10. Bumped the RAM to 16GB. Unfortunately, this is one very hot laptop. Temps hitting over 80C when installing apps. Some like Windows Defender will keep the CPU hitting over 87C. Once done, it will settle at 58C. At the same time, I found the dock together with the monitor and stand. A complete set for very little money.

I have two of these, both run Linux perfectly. I have the i7 with a 1366x6768 screne. This has been my daily driver for the last two years, currently run LMDE 4 on it. I also have the 15 version with 1920x180 touchscreen running OpenSUSE TW. The i7 is noticeably faster and lighter than the i5 which maintains its position as my daily. Just got my hands on a m03p I've eben using while int he office and I am thinking of harvesting the i5 for parts for it. Love the mSATA drives - I have many lying around the house, and this machine is among the easiest I ever had to get to the ungradeable parts. I've never HAD to remove keyboard to upgrade sdd, ram or wifi.

Hi there, love your channel. You were one of the channels that go me into used Thinkpads. Anyway, do you feel that the 12.5 screen is too small along with the smaller keyboard? I currently have a beat up T430s which is starting to show its age a bit. From this video I have found this Lattitude series and can't decide between the 12 or 14 inch(potentially the 7280 vs 7480, potentially go back a generation pending price). Typically do the normal browsing, streaming, light games(prefer old school games). Just having a hard time deciding since I have never had a 12.5 ultrabook before. I know you and other tech channels get these questions all the time, but any advice you could give is much appreciated. Cheers from a fellow Canadian.

These where not really designed for gaming in mind. It'sa light and thin office computer. A very nice one at that. But seriously.. It's light and thin.. even the XPS 15 with it's core Xeon cpu, and 1050ti video throttles under gaming. Something the XPS was kind of designed for. I mean I think Dell engineers just thought people would render 4k video.. but light to mid gaming.. sure. Just not as well as the thicker "G" series for sure. Right tools for the right job.

Yeah, anything non-touch has the Silver painted finish. Otherwise, these units are ok although are prone to a couple issues. 1, these batteries age poorly and are prone issues (I've seen several explode, mind you out of hundreds of used unit). 2, occasionally there is an issue of a short causing a CPU limiter (on the I7 being stuck at 30% maximum CPU output) and this is remedied by insulating between the keyboard and motherboard. 3, used touch models are prone to 'white spots' but this is consistent with many touch models Dell used at the time. Having said that, they are rather versatile and if having to choose between an unmodified X240, I would probably opt for one of these.
