Thanks for this as I just stumbled across it. I've just returned a benq monitor I bought to go with my new mac-mini setup precisely because of usb-c connection issues you mentioned with mac - it worked fine with hdmi but needed the usb-c to connect to my macbook pro. When you are using FCPX, are your video scopes properly defined? I have the 2k Pro-art and I find the compositing on my M1 Mac Mini causes the scope info to be blown out white and unusable unless I stretch the scopes window to the full screen width. It is particularly if you set the waveforms to luma.

Thank you for the quick follow up video, it was very helpful. On the Dell calibration report you mentioned, does it say what the Delta value is? Also, thanks for showing Lightroom at those scaling options - it was very useful to see. And for the light bleeding comment you received, it's best to play that all black video at night when the room is dark. If you do, let us know if any is noticed - it's not a concern for me but i did hear one comment say for them it was at the bottom left, so likely why another commented on it.
@sturousephoto

No problem! There are bar charts covering delta for 32 colours and the delta is given for each. The highest delta on my reports for sRGB and Rec 709 is less than 1, the highest delta for P3 is a single red colour which is about 3 - and a couple of peaks just under 2. I couldn't see any light leakage in the dark when I checked. It's certainly not noticeable anyway. Hope that helps.

Thank's an awful lot, Stuart for your proper review! I got mine this week. I am under the impression that there is a little vignetting on the lower edge. Probably because my eyes are on the upper half height which gives me more angle when looking down. Again makes you awe at how very good these apple panels are: no such vignetting whatsoever. (i have a macbook air m1 standing below the monitor with the lid open, thus using the macbook screen in combination with the dells screen). Thanks for this video and the Q&A session. I have some additional questions? 1) Is the build quality satisfying? From your tubes, it looks solid... do the monitors wiggle easily, maybe too easily? Do you have a solid impression wrt. the durability of the stand and occasional changes in height, angle and even portrait mode? 2) Does the portrait mode work with the Mac studio? 3) I guess you don't happen to have a PS4 or PS5 laying around to be tested? ;-)

Hello, I am currently in the process of selecting a monitor for my MacBook Air M2. At the moment, I am considering two models: the Dell Ultrasharp U2723QE and the Asus ProArt PA279CRV. Unfortunately, I do not have the opportunity to visit a physical store and directly compare these two monitors. Currently, I am leaning towards the Dell due to my preference for its design. I have two questions: Is it possible to use a USB-C cable to simultaneously transfer video from a Mac and charge it? If so, what is the charging power? Have you had the chance to compare these two monitors? I've come across online reviews mentioning that black tones do not appear truly black on the Dell. Have you experienced this issue? Additionally, which monitor do you believe offers better color reproduction? I would greatly appreciate your insights.

Thank you for the great review! How is the color calibration with Mac screens? I’ve been set on getting the BenQ PD3220U for its specs and it having a “m-book” mode which is a color setting to match Mac screens/devices. However, I just came across this Dell monitor and it’s higher brightness and contrast compared to the BenQ has me really intrigued. If the Dell matches Mac screens well, I’d definitely would go with the Dell. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Colour calibration works well with an X-rite dongle. Regardless of how the Dell or BenQ comes from the factory, I’d calibrate it anyway. And I’d calibrate the MacBook so they should produce the same results regardless of M-book setting or not.

I also own this monitor, I bought it after yours first review :) - but I had this one researched a lot. Do you have coil whine when in sleep mode? I have this. I am also using the USB-C and use LAN with PC. What I like is: screen, anti-glare coating, ports, and Dell software - seriously I need sheduled brightness and contrast from app it changes automatically. Now days in Poland are still short, a bit to bright at the morning and sunset at 3:00 PM ehh. Software form Dell manages that quite well, I can complain that shedule has just two time-slots 'so to speak'.

Hi Stuart, thank you for the awesome and deep review! I’m upgrading from an old (2014) Apple Thunderbolt Display 27”, using with Macbook Pro 2019 (aways closed-display on dock). I would like to ask two questions: 1) with the thundebolt monitor I can connect my macbook closed-display and it recognizes normally. With this Dell is this possible too, or for the monitor to recognize the MB is it necessary for it to be open when plug usb-c cable? 2) Do the smart keyboard volume and brightness key commands work with this monitor? Thank you in advance.

Hi Jose, I’m afraid I can’t help with your first question - I’ve only connected this monitor to my Mac Studio. Hopefully somebody else can answer that for you!? As for your second question the brightness keys do not work like they would with an Apple display or as on an iMac or MacBook. The brightness can be easily changed if you use the Dell display software. The volume keys do work, but keep in mind the Dell does not have internal speakers, so the volume keys change the volume of your external speakers as you would expect. Hope that helps.

There’s a lot of comments on here about scaling and personally I don’t get it - you just go into the Mac’s settings and adjust the zoom setting to how big you want your image, text and icons to appear. I see or experience no issues with performance etc in doing this. It’s a great display for the Mac Studio, I have zero complaints!

@@sturousephoto brilliant. Thanks. Mine arrived last week. It’s very good. No probs at all with scaling and revolution. Couple of things I don’t like though - the matt screen (reflections are pretty bad compared to gloss, the USB A ports don’t have enough power to charge an iPad and other devices, it’s not very bright, it feels cheap. And there are just way too many settings. But I am comparing it to the Studio Display. 7/10 over all.

Nice looking monitor I may get one of these used in future. I'm an amateur photographer and for several years I've been using Lenovo T450 with a Dell U2412M via displayport and been happy. My new Lenovo X390 has no display port (whilst the U2412M has no HDMI connections) so I've been forced up upgrade my monitor too. I did not to much research as I was very happy with Dell, so I got a cheap used Dell U2715H which seems pretty nice for £120. Is the HDMI connection the best option for connecting laptop & monitor? I have a couple of USB-C sockets on the X390 too.

Anyone know if it supports 3008x1692 resolution when connected to a MacBook? My 4k LG monitor supports 3008x1692 and it's ideal. When using 2560x1440 I find apps too big, and when using 3840x2160 apps are too small. The goldilocks resolution for me is 3008x1692, which is basically 3k (or half of 6k).

@@sturousephoto I wanted to upgrade to three quality panels that were closely matched from the factory, do not have backlight bleed problems, good black uniformity and DP 1.4. I usually work at night in a dark room. Sometimes I connect input sources that can't be calibrated (thus care about the factory calibration). I don't need a monitor with a hardware LUT. I tried 7 PD2700U monitors at the store and all had visibly off white balances, anti-glare coating blemishes and bad black uniformity. The three that I did take home, one developed a backlight flickering issue when left powered on longer than 24 hours. I'm lucky that the store manager had the same monitors and agreed that their batch must have been defective and that his were perfect, unlike the ones I had tried. I'm happy to try these UltraSharps! The new panel "IPS Black" panel tech seems promising!

the problem with 4k 27'' displays is that they dont have the required 220PPI needed for native scaling. If you scale using the middle 3 options you are using the GPU to scale the display which is using system resources. Basically why you either go 5K or the other way to HD or 1440 so you can use native 110PPI scaling.

This is not as simple as you think, There is also a high price performance wise for pushing out 5K content 60 frames a second over pushing out 4k content 60 frames a second. Check reviews on youtube for the technical results on this, but basically the computer needs to process 25% more pixels. It's the same reason gaming monitors are low res.

I think MacBooks are currently using P3, so I suppose the P3 setting should be closest. However, if you care that much about colour then you should really think about calibrating your display every 4-6 weeks using something like an i1 Display, Spider or Colormunki - Xrite, Datacolor or Calibrite tools.

I can not remember but one of the laptops dell, MSI, or Samsung galaxy pro has that additional setting, which allows you to connect via thunderbolt 4 to your 4k monitor, on a monitor in settings put full 4k resolution but same time to have a very normal big size icon and top bar

I believe this is a drawback of macOS rather than the display. Some displays may work better with the os unlocking this feature but it really is Apple's issue rather than an additional setting on the monitor
@EnterSpacebar
@EnterSpacebar 2 жыл бұрын
This is a MacOS issue. And has been so for nearly a decade. Apple are adamant about being lazy with the scaling mechanism and only doing integer vales of 110 ppi "Retina". So, 4k at 24", 5K at 27" and 6K at 32" will get you "native" (integer multiple) scaling on MacOS, anything else and you have to compromise with either interpolation (which has a quality and performance hit) or weirdly small/large UI elements.

I like your view on scaling. I have to admit I CAN tell the difference between the naive perfect 2:1 pixel scaling on 4K, but I also agree 2560x1440 is the sweet-spot and the slight loss in sharpness is no biggie and easily worth the trade-off.
