Explore if the Dell WD19TB dock will work with Ubuntu or Linux distro with dual(two)/triple(three) monitor setup when connected to the Dell Latitude 5401 laptop. Yes! I just bought this for Ubuntu 20.04 on my Dell Precision 5550 and it works right out of the box. Three monitors confirmed. Just had to enable Thunderbolt in the BIOS as suggested. Thanks!

Great video just got a third monitor and trying to figure out how to make that work. Was going from hdmi to VGA and that was not working so now buy display port to hdmi.

In addition to the 3/4 displays If you're using an igpu you should look up how many screens it supports The intel uhd 620 in my i7 8550u caps at 3 screens

I have a new Inspiron 16 Plus and this dock doesn't show bootmanager on anything but the laptop screen. Also, you cannot even boot with the screen closed because it will throw exceptions that stop the boot process. I have updated the firmware and also talked to Dell support and no luck. Otherwise great dock.

Interesting. I'm currently facing an issue with a Latitude 5700 and this dock being unable to drive two external displays on DP at QHD (2560x1440) on arch linux. I notice you were running at 1920x1080 which is the max I can run them at as pair (just running one at a time I'm able to get QHD). The dock manual claims it should be able to run them both at QHD, but so far I've failed to get it working.

What about the CPU load ? Have you tested this with some technical SW such as Matlab, Android Studio, PyCharm and similar ?

4 displays is not the dock's problem. it is the intel graphics limitation which supports up to 3 monitors, at least on linux

Hi I use WD19TB in my laptop Dell Inspiron 13-7378. it charges the laptop, but the dock LED power light is off and could not switch off or turn on my computer. All software and drivers have been updated. I am wondering whether the dock is not suitable for this computer. Thank you!

Thanks BsianDad :) - I have a Lenovo Yogo 910 (without thunderbolt) that I plugged up to the WD19TB through the display USB-C and it's working for multiple displays.... Could I daisy chain an EGPU after the WD19TB to improve graphics to the monitors? Thanks!

I've encountered issues in the past in linux when extending screens where there is a total width limitation. Could you be hitting those issues? Does 2 external screens + laptop screen work ?

Hi, great review! I also want to buy the Dell 5401 and run it with Ubuntu. I also want to use the Dell wd19tb to use my 3 monitors. The only difference is that I have the 25" 2k monitors. Do you have any experience if my 3 monitors will work on full 2k resolution? Thanks and keep on!

Hi Daniel Fucks, yes I have tried this setup of Dell 5401 with Ubuntu and 2x 27" 2k monitors plus 1x 24" FHD monitor and was able to drive all three monitors without extra driver support =). Thank you very much for your feedback too =).

If your MacBook Pro is between 2017 to 2020 the non-M1 MacBook then yes this dock will do extended monitor mode, the second monitor via displayport needs a convertor to usb-c to plug into the thunderbolt port at the back of the WD19TB. Again yes for 3 extended monitor if it's non-M1 MacBook/pro.

Is this for Ubuntu? Make sure the power is connected I know it sounds silly but I have done this a few times not turn on the power for the dock.

Hi Otis B, I had to test this out myself on how it goes with 4 monitors. The Dell 5401 without the discrete GPU and WD19TB, the results are it was able to detect the forth monitor but unable to extend to 4th monitor it. If you try to push display to it, it would disconnect one of the other three monitors. So with the onboard graphics the max is 3 external monitors. I used both DP ports, HDMI and the thunderbolt port with an adapter to change to HDMI for the 4th monitor. If I ever get a discrete GPU version I will try again.

Otis B you’re very welcome, the Dell 5401 paired with the WD19TB is fantastic. Remember to do the BIOS update first thing when you get the 5401.

I used a splitter and it duplicates image onto the third screen I can't get it to extend. What did you use?
