An incredibly lovely song written by Englishman, Cyril Tawney. This was the last song he wrote before he left the Royal Navy in 1959. (‘The Grey Funnel Line’ is the sailors' nickname for the Royal Navy). The three women's voices blend so perfectly it is a thrill to listen to this song! "The Grey Funnel Line" is from the second in a trilogy of cd's which were made from a BBC 5 part special on Irish music made in 1991. This cd, "Bring It All Back Home: The Influence of Irish Music Vol.2" was released in 1999. Enjoy! Great info on Cyril Tawney at www.goldilox.co.uk/engfolk/cyr...
GREY FUNNEL LINE LYRICS BY: Cyril Tawney
(transcription thanks to: shanty.rendance.org/lyrics/showlyric.php/greyfunnel). As sung by Keane, Black, & Harris...
Don't mind the rain or the rolling sea
The weary night never worries me
But the hardest time in a sailor's day
Is to watch the sun as it dies away
Here's one more day on the Grey Funnel Line
The finest ship that sails the sea
Is still a prison for the likes of me
But give me wings like Noah's dove
I'll fly up harbour to the one I love
Here's one more day on the Grey Funnel Line
Oh Lord if dreams were only real
I'd feel my hands on that wooden wheel
And with all my heart I'd turn her round
And tell the boys that we're homeward bound
Here's one more day on the Grey Funnel Line
I'll pass the time like some machine
Until the waters turn to green
Then I'll dance on down that walk ashore
And sail the Grey Funnel Line no more
And sail the Grey Funnel Line no more
