An incredibly lovely song written by Englishman, Cyril Tawney. This was the last song he wrote before he left the Royal Navy in 1959. (‘The Grey Funnel Line’ is the sailors' nickname for the Royal Navy). The three women's voices blend so perfectly it is a thrill to listen to this song! "The Grey Funnel Line" is from the second in a trilogy of cd's which were made from a BBC 5 part special on Irish music made in 1991. This cd, "Bring It All Back Home: The Influence of Irish Music Vol.2" was released in 1999. Enjoy! Great info on Cyril Tawney at www.goldilox.co.uk/engfolk/cyr...
GREY FUNNEL LINE LYRICS BY: Cyril Tawney
(transcription thanks to: shanty.rendance.org/lyrics/showlyric.php/greyfunnel). As sung by Keane, Black, & Harris...
Don't mind the rain or the rolling sea
The weary night never worries me
But the hardest time in a sailor's day
Is to watch the sun as it dies away
Here's one more day on the Grey Funnel Line
The finest ship that sails the sea
Is still a prison for the likes of me
But give me wings like Noah's dove
I'll fly up harbour to the one I love
Here's one more day on the Grey Funnel Line
Oh Lord if dreams were only real
I'd feel my hands on that wooden wheel
And with all my heart I'd turn her round
And tell the boys that we're homeward bound
Here's one more day on the Grey Funnel Line
I'll pass the time like some machine
Until the waters turn to green
Then I'll dance on down that walk ashore
And sail the Grey Funnel Line no more
And sail the Grey Funnel Line no more

@Rhinosince59 I am glad you like it and I appreciate that you took the time to let me know! I have heard other versions but this is my favorite. Their voices blend so much. ( I hadn't heard the song 6 months ago & now I see it popping up all over. It was new to me also!) Thanks for stopping by. My best, Moppet (Barbara)

@MyMoppet52 I Love Emmylou, always have done, Delores is new to me. I am from England but have lived in Spain for the last 17 years, I love Irish folk music, not much here though, fortunately I play guitar so I can entertain myself. I go to Dublin every couple of years to get my Irish Folk FIX! All the best Marshall/Javea Spain

The point of the special was about the spread of influence on Irish music to other places, such as the American south, hence the connection to and with country music, hence the inclusion of Emmylou Harris on this song.

+Dave Barclay I am just seeing your comment, and you gave me a smile. I can't help it that this came from an album called "Bring It All Back Home: The Influence of Irish Music Vol.2". I had no influence in naming the album. I DID get a bit testy with one person, after I had answered him a few times. (I might have deleted some of his comments, I can't remember). Thanks for the smile...It IS about the English navy and was written by an Englishman. I've added my favorite link on Cyril Tawney. If you know of a better one, I would be happy to change. www.goldilox.co.uk/engfolk/cyril_tawney.htm

Thank you for your info. I've been tracking the influence for years & long ago no one 'believed' me. I'm so glad it's gotten out. I grew up with bluegrass & mountain music. Noticed several exact repeats in Irish music & went from there. You have helped with this. Thanks. My best, Moppet

I'm glad you left your message & do NOT consider it nit-picking.It's hard to see some videos up year+ with nice views and NO comments! I love comments. I can only assume that the BBC must have made the program on Irish music due to the singers. I'm in the USA & really don't know. I do computer research & look at my liner notes for info I put up. Then again, Emmylou Harris is from the US. Definitely NOT Irish. Interesting comment! Guess this isn't much help, especially after I saw Emmylou listed!

@atbcoach Thank you! I have no idea at all why I spelled Cyril that way!!! I have NEVER seen it spelled anyway but Cyril. I can't even claim a "typo" since the letters aren't close together. :) I've corrected it and thanks. Thank you also for listening and taking the time to comment! My best to you, Moppet

Hi. You left a comment a long time ago & I couldn't help much. I just got a note & am passing it along since they didn't address it to you. It makes sense. I think it's more mountain-Appalachain, but right idea. Cyril Tawney was credited. It was in the song section with the lyrics and The Royal Navy was credited. Apparently many people are too lazy to hit the "Show More" button and read what has been posted. Numerous comments have been made by apparently upset English people who didn't read all the info. I have corrected this and posted the info ABOVE the Show More line for those in a hurry. I also list all artists and back up musicians from liner notes when possible. You have to click "Show More" to see this also. Thank you for listening and for leaving a comment. It helped me decide to "fix" my comments to make them more readily seen. I've missed comments for the last 2 years due to major illness. I had surgery in late July and am just now seeing comments for the past 2+ years. I'm sorry that so many appear to be upset by the fact that 2 Irish women and an American woman sang a song that the BBC labeled Irish music. The last I knew, the BBC originated in England. Perhaps the comments should have been addressed to them concerning a show they taped almost 20 years ago. I LABEL THINGS AS THEY ARE. Thanks for listening. My best to you, Barbara

Well, Dolores IS Irish, otherwise this song has no specific Irish connection. It does, however, fit the general theme of the program which discusses the influence of transatlantic migration on Irish and American culture. Speaking as one who has lived some 70% of his life "abroad", I contend "The Grey Funnel Line" was included to illustrate the desire of some to re-patriate (along with modified versions of the culture they, or their ancestors, exported).

There's plenty of good Irish music. The Irish do not need to misattribute a song written by an Englishman about the Royal Navy.

This was on a BBC special. I gave credit to Cyril Tawney down in the lyrics section, but I don't think many click on "Show More". I have added credit and the fact that this is about the Royal Navy ABOVE the "Show More" line so those who were too lazy to read what has been written can see ALL the info. This was on a BBC special about Irish music. You might want to address your comments to the BBC about a show they did almost twenty years ago. It is a lovely song. It is sung by 2 Irish women and an American woman. I don't understand the comments by people so upset. If you'd read the complete info, Tawney and The Royal Navy were mentioned and credited. Thanks for listening. I'm sorry that the BBC labeling (FROM ENGLAND) upset you. My best, Barbara p.s. In all my years on utube, I think this is the first rather blunt response I've made. Even to those who use vulgar language, I dealt with. I had nothing to do with the labeling. Someone in England did that years ago. The Irish or myself had nothing to do with it! Enjoy the music and lose the attitude.

Michael Neville Hello. I've forwarded a comment from a fellow Englishman who left it a year ago. There is much confusion over this song label. I label as it is sold though. Hope this helps a bit: Sean Mulholland 1 year ago in reply to James Gale Well, Dolores IS Irish, otherwise this song has no specific Irish connection. It does, however, fit the general theme of the program which discusses the influence of transatlantic migration on Irish and American culture.
