The pixel art from this game is so nostalgic and gorgeous to me, that I've been painstakingly physically cross stitching them for the past two years. It's a long process, but they look incredible all put together and it just warms my heart looking at them

I always thought the Pokémon TCG GB game art was fantastic as a kid. Replaying the game as an adult, the amount of care and detail that went into recreating the original cards is ridiculous! It manages to be both faithful to the original art yet super readable on the GB/GBC. In my opinion, adding an outline to the Pokémon does a lot of the work and is the smartest decision they made. Thank you very much for going deep into this topic. Turns out, they went even further than I thought! This was a great video on a great game :'D

A little known fact: Pokémon Gold and Silver actually are compatible with the Super Game Boy. It works more like Pokémon Red and Blue did, with areas being given the same color palette rather than the more colorful Game Boy Color graphics. Also, at night, everything turns a dark shade of cyan/teal, which looks really unique. It's a really interesting and unique way to play, and I definitely recommend it to everyone. Edit: A lot of people are talking about how they want to see this for themselves, but they don't have a Super Game Boy to try it with. Most Game Boy emulators are able to emulate the Super Game Boy pallette, so you might want to try that.

The art and music of this game are insane and it's disappointing to see so little talk about them. I could literally notice which cards were illustrated by Mitsuhiro Arita even though I hadn't seen the original card before. They recreated the different styles of illustrators and 3D renders with impressive accuracy.

this was such an awesome video. i do a lot of pixel art myself, and being a fan of the TCG game for the gameboy made this all the more interesting. the way that the developers had such limited possibilities with making the artwork but still managed to pull it off amazingly is really fascinating to me. stuff like this is what keeps me motivated with making pixel art. thank you for making this, it's not only really informative but also super interesting as well to see this process be taken apart into all of it's steps!

Another fun feature of Card GB on the SGB is it uses the SGB border to track the medals you’ve earned. Every time you earn a new medal, the background is updated with that medal’s artwork. The amount of detail and care that went into Card GB makes it quite the underrated gem

At 9:40, I thought of Dark Golbat and how it has a similar issue as Charmeleon, where colors of the Pokemon actually 'bleed out' into the background. Dark Golbat is a worse offender though, because it's purple and blue are very apparent unlike the Charmeleon's small zone of red pixels. Although I don't know a single player that would use Dark Golbat. It's such a bad card, and I don't think the AI uses it either.

Wow, I played both the different GB games of Yugioh and both games of TGC pokémon so I found the whole video very interesting. Now I understand why I felt there was something off/different with the second game of Pokémon in regards to the art of the cards. Also, I cannot believe that was the reason behind the attacking cards being face down in Yugioh the whole time! For a limitation of the game, it was an extremely clever way to overcome it. I would have never notice, it looks very like an artistic choice mostly.

The Pokemon TCG had no right being brilliant as it was. I rebought it on the 3DS eShop and had just as much fun as I did when it first came out. And to think the soundtrack is somehow even more accomplished than the mainline games were is incredible in its own right. The final boss theme is like 4 minutes long and absolutely insane to hear coming out of the Game Boy sound processor. This video gave me even more of an appreciation than I already had- I knew the pixel art was supremely faithful, having indulged in the Pokemon card craze when it first kicked off, but to understand how it was made and unique it all is is just something else. Amazing study, and brilliant editing as well, well done. Love the abrupt ending too- that needs to be a regular thing, lol.

I am soooo glad this video hit the algorithm and was recommended to most of us here! This video and your tutorial video are extremely well-made and immensely helpful that it was the kick of motivation I needed to get over my mental block of not wanting to try to make my own TCG romhack. As someone else who doesn't consider themselves an artist, it was honestly not too hard to pick up to get something done that looks pretty decent that I'm content with, even with it not being perfect or anything. (Thanks for liking/RT'ing my first attempt as well 💚) Now, if I can somehow use my programming skills to get over the last mental block of figuring out how to make decent AI use the new "re-balanced" cards I'm planning on designing, then the gates are fully open to making my dream a reality. Hoping I can report back soon enough once I'm done or close, and best of luck with your own TCG/Mystery Dungeon game you're working on that I'm super curious about too! 👀
