Seeing this on the 40th anniversary of the event. I just missed out on all this being only 5 at the time and grew up with the 125s, but love everything about Deltics! Great stuff.

+James T The 91s are a different era,plus they are electric traction,the Deltics were in a different league,the glorious 22 brought the ECML into the diesel era with a bang.

I was at York that day! I'd travelled from Leeds with a couple of mates, to witness what would be a sombre day. I must've only just started spotting at that time, as I recall a 56 appearing, and I was amazed that other people could tell what it was by just looking! I was stood at the Dringhouses end of the station, and I still remember there was a bit of fog, and as the tour appeared out if the murk, the headboard on the bottom brackets made it look as though the loco was not happy! Great vid

22 to be exact. The first “production” unit entered service in 1960. They will ride the rails until this day the recording was taken (2nd of January 1982)

Thank you so much for sharing this footage. I have a still photo taken of Alycidon which almost matches one of the images on this video. It's just incredible to be able to go back and see that moment again, I never imagined it would be possible to do that. Fantastic work.

All of us have seen the ITN footage and then out of the blue this gem appears. I'd heard about Alycidon leading Tulyar, but to actually see it! Utter magic in motion of a very very special day. The cheers from the train say it all - British Engineering at its very best.

exellent vid, i remember being at nwcastle in the late 70s early 80s, and used to watch these commin through all day, took it for granted guess i thought the deltics would never end, how wrong i was, saddest day ever when these were scrapped, the ones on this vid are all preserved, and i was at newcastle again on sept 11th 2010 when royal scots grey pulled in , the memories came bounding back, magnificent loco we will never see the likes of a class like this again, , boring railways now

How can anyone not like these superb machines? I worked at BHM New Street 1989-2001 and was usually booked to work the platform from where 55022 and the 1O99 to Ramsgate departed at 06.58 on Summer Saturdays in the mid 90s. I also saw her work other specials through New St. Brilliant memories. If anyone has a copy of Oakwood video 'Perpetual Motion' I can be seen about 35 mins in, walking past the loco and rubbing the nameplate (my one claim to stardom) lol!

Well to all the deltic haters think about this. All these young people in the film are now in their 40s now add some of the young people who love proper British locos and bang you have a sizeable audience. Thats why most deltic tours are selling out on 22. As to this footage its a class moment in history, one which i missed when i was younger, and thanks to auroel I now see.

@video1recorder You know I think you may be wrong. I think deltics are actually getting more popular, a number of new books are out and wherever RSG goes she gets photographed more and more, not to mention the packed tours she goes on. Look at the 100K raised for 55016 when she had problems a couple of years ago,i think times are a changing.

@craignicklin4573
@craignicklin4573 9 жыл бұрын
yes thats why more people follow these machines than steam which is more polluting, so do you really want to go down this road? (by the way I'm a Chemist).
@PreservationEnthusiast
@PreservationEnthusiast 9 жыл бұрын
Yes steam is also very polluting too. Coal smoke is full of arsenic, cyanide, and carcinogens as well as carbon monoxide. I don't need a chemist to tell me that thanks very much. I'm also proposing all remaining steam engines are cut into small pieces and sent to the blast furnaces to be melted down into more useful objects.

@stevewhosnotsteve. Thanks. I don't normally get involved with morons, but his negative and fallacious views about the Deltic really annoyed me. It smacks of someone who was once involved with them in some way and was sacked/booted out/blackballed for being an bona fide idiot and he's very bitter about it. Screw him, we'll still enjoy them no matter and continue to have respect for the guys working on the preserved 6 and the prototype. Peace
