We look at The Cost of Inheritance, a new documentary that examines the growing movement for reparations for Black American descendants of people who were enslaved and addressing the historical injustices they have faced. While some of this is being done by city and state commissions tasked with studying reparations, others are attempting to address systemic racism at the local and personal level, as detailed in the film. "It's pretty incredible, the pace in which we see reparations moving," says filmmaker Yoruba Richen, who is hopeful that this work will eventually push the federal government into action. We also hear from Lotte Lieb Dula, a descendant of an enslaver in the Mississippi Delta, and Randy Quarterman, whose ancestor Zeike Quarterman was held in bondage, about how they are addressing the legacy of slavery in their personal lives.

Its weird to me because if they want to make this a race issue, Africans in Africa still have slavery today in 2023, as well as many other horrors like FGM, child marriage, child labor, witchcraft, poor treatment of women and there are dozens of tribal, religious and ethnic conflicts and wars. The other thing is, The US and Europe already pays reparations. They have been doing it for decades. They pay billions every year to most African countries and most poor countries around the world. Many poor countries rely on western aid to survive and eat because most African countries dont produce enough food 80% of all infrastructure and investments in Africa come from the west. More than 50% of African hospitals are still run by western NGO's and church groups like the catholic church. The west funds most of the health programs for things like malaria, HIV, and vaccination programs. You can look up online how much poor countries get in western aid, and its billions every year.

@@tubester4567 The U.S. and European countries do not pay "reparations" to African countries. They are bribing their way to Africa's resources. I understand that one could be under the impression that it actually is charity or reparations but it is absolutely not. Even when the money actually benefits the people, it's just to make their theft of resources look more acceptable.

No offence but Screw your FEELINGS !!! Deal with reality not your feelings !! So will they start asking the African tribes who enslaved Africans and sold them to others into slavery ?? Will they also ask the relatives of Blacks who owned slaves in America to also pay reparations ?? Will America be able to end affirmative action when reparations are paid, and end the reverse racist action towards whites that has gone on far too long now ???? I'm sick of the Race and Victim card being pulled everyday !! If people of color can't make it today there is something wrong with them, Not the system !!!! The system caters to people of color far more than whites !! And who in the hell are you people, asking whites of today's generations to pay for things that happened LONG ago in another generation ?? Start with the tribes in Africa FIRST !! They are the key to slavery then, and are still doing it today !! And Stop voting for the Liberal illusion of Freedom and reality of peaceful enslavement every election !! Enough with this Liberal circus and clown show that keeps races divided and fighting with each other, We All bleed red !! It's the Democrats who backed slavery, founded the KKK, enforced Jim Crow laws and allowed lynchings, the Democrats !! But people of color keep voting Democrat ???? WTF is wrong with you people, Wake Up for Christ sake !!!!!!!!! Open your eyes, Democrat States are the worst states in the Union, poverty, homelessness, crime and filth are rampant in Democrat States, Far more than Republican States !! Note: This is my opinion, it's not intended to offend anyone in any way.

Descendants of enslavers can be the most helpful by lobbying Congress to pay reparations instead of placing the debt of slavery on their own inheritances. The debt belongs to the federal government, the Treasury, some central banks in Europe. It's too massive to be handled locally or by enslaver descendants unless they're in Congress. In that case many are in Congress or are local lawmakers. Maybe that's why there's been no progress.

1000% wrong. The government does not have any money. The government has no assets. You are asking people who had nothing to do with slavery to pay people who were never enslaved. @@frederiqueleno5415 I am not putting the suffering down, but I am neither allowing it to perpetuate and pave the way for a ruined future. In the end, one must acknowledge that the battle is won and slavery doesn’t exist like it used too. If it wasn’t the case, one would understand the urge for resistance and accountability. Now tell me, who is gonna pay? Who is going to be held responsible? No one. So what will any complaint cause now? Nothing, except spreading awareness. But why be angry? Why hurt yourself more, when it’s clearly over? All of Balkans were slaves and vassals to the ottomans for 400 years up to 1900, do you hear them complaining? In the end of the day, we are all consciousness; not a colour, a body, a mind, or a name. You are conscious of it. You are inside the body. You are formless, nameless, colourless, and beautiful. Many economic efforts were made to lift poor working class whites out of poverty. Affirmative Action doubled household incomes of white families, which is 1 out of 1000's of policies and practices. Benign neglect (1960's) is a policy currently in effect that prohibits helping those whose ancestors were enslaved and used as currency. US Reparations for Slavery is about profit sharing. Millions of enslaved Americans built wealth that's controlled the globe 3 centuries+. Wealth created for US and European elites and governments (taxes). 1776 US/Europe banned ("to end slavery")bringing African POW labor into the colonies due to insurrections. 1808 termination date meant the 'domestic breeding' industry had 32 years to produce the next line of laborers. Girls as young as 8 were captured for that industry. Class-based reparations does not address crime against humanity. Repair is mandated. The US continues unfair treatment towards that American lineage. In order to get it to stop, protections are needed. Only monetary repair can change that. 4 quadrillion+ in labor cost was saved using enslaved labor. Imagine if those people were paid and those dollars were circulating amongst laborers. Maybe more than 1% of us would be sharing the wealth.
@Will_Moffett
@Will_Moffett 5 ай бұрын
@@anpdm1 The unfair treatment of the lineage is also expressed in hiring practices and in media. Most of the black actors that get put on in major productions are not from the enslaved lineage. The production companies seem to go to the ends of the earth to avoid ADOS (American Descendents of Slaves) and hire black people of other origins. Most of the slots at the Ivy League filled by black students are African nationals, not ADOS. It's almost as if there is an implicit agreement to target ADOS and deny them any opportunity whatsoever. It's not just a passive continual denial of the importance and fairness of inheritance for ADOS but some kind of active targeting and disdain.

At the height of slavery 1.6% of the population owned slaves. The very idea, the demand that people alive today who had absolutely nothing to do with slavery take their hard earned money and give it to people who never experienced slavery is absolutely abhorrent. This is the rich and corporations passing off their debt to the poor and others who have zero responsibility for those acts. America inherited slavery from European countries and ended the practice within 1 generation. Seek your money, your reparations from the corporations that still exist today that benefited from slavery. Banks, insurance companies, all the Universities. Seek your reparations from the actual enslavers in Africa. In Europe. Citizens alive today have zero responsibility or guilt for those actions and owe nothing.
