We speak with Lily Greenberg Call, the first known Jewish appointee to resign from the Biden administration over the war in Gaza. Greenberg Call was a special assistant to the chief of staff at the Interior Department after being named to the post by President Joe Biden in early 2023, but she quit on May 15 in a four-page letter that slammed Biden’s “disastrous, continued support for Israel’s genocide in Gaza.” Greenberg Call is at least the fifth high-profile resignation from the Biden administration since October 7. She says her resignation was motivated by her Jewish values. “I feel that I am really living in my Jewishness, in the essence of what I was raised with, by standing up for Palestinians and by demanding their freedom,” Greenberg Call tells Democracy Now!, criticizing Biden and others for pitting Jewish safety against Palestinian rights. “I am so angry at the president that he is using my community as justification for this slaughter, making us the face of the American war machine.”

With your logic no case no Genocide would ever be credible, since the people accusing a government of genocide are either being exterminated or "have never been there". Maybe you are worried that actually looking at it might change your mind. If on some days 0 on some days 50 aid trucks reach a population of 2 Million, it doesn't take a genius to figure out that they are being starved intentionally. Btw Israel calculated their caloric intake has let in just enough to not starve the - for years. Now they get a fraction of the already insufficient amount. There is an organization called "forensic architecture" doing phenomenal work while not being necessarily physically present on scene they are reporting on, using technology and video footage from different angles and metadata to determine facts about scenes. Proximity is not always as relevant anymore. The UN's special rapporteur has spent years there, she came to the same conclusion. I will never forget celebrating with my Jewish Egyptian neighbours in the fifties and sixties during their Barmidzfahs. Badmidzvahs, Sabbath dinners and true fraternity. We had such fun, we prayed together and shared meals together. We can do this in the Holy Land and start building community based action programs geared towards a rich future for all.

The same thing happen to me as a Dominican with our neighbors from Haiti. In our country, we are "superior" to haitians. History taught in school is always about how they hurt us, and we kicked them out. But after meeting several haitians, listening to their side of the story (the TRUTH), I totally opened my eyes to a different world. I never hated them, but to me, they were the enemy (according to the education provided to me). I think Haitians are amazing people who have had terrible people leading them. Some religious people actually read and get it. I am touched by her real values, intellectual curiosity, and empathy. Jewish history does obviously teach about occupation and oppression (Roman occupation), racism, displacement, etc.
