In a way, yes. On the other hand: it is kind of sad there are people in high places that would actually want this kind of world unironically. And even worse that among them are people that actually believe that is for the best rather than it being a good way to extend control.

demolition man is a sad commentary on the real tyranny of communist states such as russian/ soviet union and china in which people have no self expression or individuality. that is why the price for freedom is constant vigilance. we must always be on guard. because villains who twirl their mustasches are easy to spot. but those who cloth their evil in good deeds are harder to spot.

Oddly enough Maryland, and I would presume the other original 12 states are the same, has just such a law on the books. English law was transplanted to here and it including a statute called The Profane Swearing Act. I don't know how well it was enforced back then, but a state that could do so just for three days would likely not have any money problems afterwards.

It's also a role that Jean Claude Van Damme and Jackie Chan both rejected. Even Wesley Snipes turned down the role several times, so the co-writter Joel Silver and director Marco Brambilla went to the set of the film Rising Sun to try and convince him in person. I feel a lot of that was because of how Snipes portrayed Phoenix as "evil with standards". He was nuts by normal metrics, sure, but he wasn't an unhinged maniac. If you weren't a direct threat, he generally left people alone unless he was trying to make a point. That's not to say he wouldn't just kill you, but he tended to not be indiscriminate. He also HATED Cacteau (can't spell his name) for how he was a lying hypocritical manipulator. Phoenix was open about who he was, which is why it's shown (at least in my opinion) that he doesn't have anything against John Spartan personally other than they're two opposite forces working against one another.

If you had told me 15 years ago that we would get to choose between Idiocracy or Demolition Man for our future, I'd have laughed in your face. Now I weep on your shoulder. Hollywood has been telling us where to go and how to get there for years.

I live in NSW Australia and, right now, the state's premier is very much going for a San Angeles of Demolition Man style society. In the state of Victoria to the south, the state premier's world is reminiscent of the distant future in the old story/movie The Time Machine.

yeah, back in the early 2000s I was a young kid and the world and people seemed so normal, even if some nasty shit happened from time to time. Now being 25, I am surrounded by exactly such snowflakes who see everything as racist, sexist, discriminating, hurting, violent, homophobe, trasnphobe, whatever and being all p.c and "woke". I can't take this anymore and I feel sick thinking about that it is just the beginning and that I have to share the next 60 years of my life with those nutcases creating a snowflake society where everything you do might be a "hate crime". And since "hurting" people is "bad", your opinion will be of course censored if not fit to those lunatics. Wish I could travel back in time :/
