I always find it weird that people are shocked Giyu didn't recognize Tanjiro immediately. Giyu literally met Tanjiro and Nezuko once and it was two years ago. I guess the time skip is easily forgotten.

While i enjoyed the reaction overall, there are some things that bugged me. You guys seem to forget that: 1. Demons lose most or all of their memories upon being turned into a demon, and only regain them right before death. Part of what makes Nezuko a special demon is that she remembers her brother. No matter how cruel they are, every demon was once human. The backstories are not there to make you forgive all the evil they have done, but to help people understand why they are like that. All of them add to the story, and Rui's one is quite important, as it shows why Muzan is the worst- He exploits people's weaknesses to coerce them into becoming demons, and controls them through power or fear. 2. Demons HAVE to eat humans. If they go without it for too long, they become starved, feral and weak. With little to no memories of their human life, it would be easy to see humans as food. 3. Demon Slayer is a shonen, but the story is not repetitive because not every fight is handled the same way.

Okay figured I'd put in my two cents on this. Since the beginning of the series Tanjiro has fought over ten demons. Out of all of the demons that he has fought so far we have only gotten 'sob' origin stories from 3 demons. Three. I can see how things feel repetitive to you guys though. Because how the last two 'boss battles' have ended in the same fashion but it hasnt been every fight that this formula has been executed. But I have to say I feel like the major point is being missed here. The first demon in the final selection, his backstory was necessary to allow us to look at demons in a different light to suddenly rethink our views on the idea that these demons are souless blood thirsty creatures. That was his purpose. But the other two? Rui and the guy with drums (sorry cant remember the name) ? Their backstories arent just to get us to 'sympathize/empathize with demons'. If that was the case then they would have done that with the first demon Tanjiro and Nezuko fought. But these arent regular demons. They are members of the twelve moons. But why are they members of the twelve moons? Out of all the people in the world why were these people chosen? Understand? These backstories aren't looking for a pity party. They are to give us a sense of just what kind of person MUZAN is. He's the kind of person to manipulate a child down on their luck. To take advantage of a man who feels forsaken and torn down. This man thrives on helplessness because these people are the most easiest to take advantage of. He takes advantage and throws in temptation. He really is like the DEVIL himself. I do hope in the future some of you guys won't feel like the show is being as repetitive but I also hope you continue to watch. You'll be glad you did.

Those flashbacks of demons being human/how they turned into a demon isn't supposed to watcher feel bad for them. In my opinion, it's supposed to show how Muzan is horrifying. He manipulates, that's why demons wholeheartedly believe him. Words have a great power, haven't they?

I'm late to this party but I just wanted to say that there is purpose with every demon backstory. We find out the expanse of Muzan's power, that Muzan and Tanjiro's dad have a connection, and the very first big demon Tanjiro slayed was connected to his master, etc. A good story needs a good build up or else there is no payoff.

I feel like sometimes people look for any reason to nit pick demon slayer. There are so many other Shonen that use the rinse and repeat formula as a method to progress the protagonists growth and ideals particularly when the overarching strength of the antagonist has already been established. If anything, its needed to make that progression more realistic than having just random unwarranted power ups etc. Hopefully in the future Demon Slayer does things a little bit differently but I do think each battle has been unique to the point that's it's not completely rinse and repeat too

You guys had the option to not feel bad for any demon. It's entirely up to you, Tanjiro mostly see these demons as mere victims, Tanjiro didn't know who they are, yet he still kills them. You can already seen alot of these demons were either abused, hurt and or victims of someone or something. The drawbacks of them being a demon and such is having to feed on humans, as time passes they've only focused entirely on their living and feeding. Memories become more hazy, the pretend family for example. Rui may have seemed like a bad demon, but he was a victim entirely all of them were victims. This anime doesn't make you feel sad and such that's for you to choose and react. Tanjiro is who stands out from the rest of the demon corps, he doesn't kill demons for how bad they are. The flash backs are for you to understand how the demons or said people's got to where they are. Whether or not they were a victim, but that some things can change a person into what they are.

It’s almost like every demon used to be human, and has a story of their own for how they ended up here. Would you rather they just be faceless enemies who are just there to be the big bad monster? (Though, since the main complainer likes DBZ, I guess he would)

On why they can't mass produce Shinobu's venom, the demon Slayer Co. is in the quite early industrialization of Japan, and the Demon Slayers wouldn't be able to easily do so with the number of venom skilled people they have (pretty much only the butterfly girls know much about venom and medicine)

I have to hard disagree with the formulaic take; though multiple battles are similar, the way the show approaches the portrayal of the demon backstories is unique. I don't think I've ever felt for enemies in quite the same way before. Given I've not encountered that in other shows, I didn't get tired of it after only the number of times it's happened so far in Demon Slayer. Also Rui is one of the most interesting villains ever. I love his character and backstory, even separated from the whole "sympathetic demon" aspect.

I think Mickey and Chris especially are missing the point that Muzan's blood corrupts the people he transforms - Rui was a child who Muzan took advantage of, he wasn't "evil" per se, but he committed evil acts as a demon. That's the whole reason Tanjiro feels sympathy for them, even if he understands they need to die.

This isn't some binary choice you have to make. Unlike the vast majority of shonen anime out there, this one sticks out because it tries to portray the fact that sympathy for evildoers doesn't equate to justifying their actions, nor mitigating their consequences. However, it does mean that we should still treat all people with empathy. A powerful message for this age. To Chris' point: We're literally 21 episodes in and have seen more plot advance than the vast majority of the anime you all have reacted to on the channel. But I understand how you feel vis-a-vis AoT, etc. That said, I feel like a perfect anime for you all then would be Vinland Saga (mine and a lot of other peoples' favorite anime last year).

Their takes are understandable. I can't fault people for getting tired of a pattern even if that pattern is what many people are specifically hoping for. Some do seem to be confusing sympathy for forgiveness, which is particularly poor form given that almost every horrible act is performed after losing control of themselves, not to mention guided and ENFORCED by Muzan. A child that is too sickly to ever do anything desperately wanting to be strong enough to just.. live, is a completely sympathetic figure pretty much no matter what. He had no idea the cost because how could he? That doesn't mean you have to forgive the demon he became. As Tanjirou pointed out early on in the series, only Muzan is truly irredeemable.

I just realized some of them thought every human turned demon was a good person in life. Only a few of them were shown to be. They did not show the back story of most of the demons. They only showed the backstory of it was tragic. Some of the demons you saw killed were not good people in life, they’d didn’t get their backstories shown.

some of you guys are trying too hard to be criticizing on this show lol and it’s not even the “constructive” type bc A LOT of shonen type anime follow a similar formula and i can’t believe you’re barely seeing that now with demon slayer. this show has taken some unique moves such as not taking the training period into a whole 5-10 episodes. we are now getting more into the main plot since episode 19 was the defining moment while the previous episodes have shown us that tanjiro and the gang still need a lot more training after all since this was their first MAJOR fight against a LOWER moon. we have yet to see what a HIGHER moon is capable of so pls be patient

Actually, I feel that both opinions of the show are correct. Much like Marvel movies, Demon Slayer seems to have a formulaic story-telling that can feel repetitive after enough exposure. However, the formulaic structure is also a useful tool to establish small arcs, big plot twists, or huge climaxes. It's a necessary evil in the same way exposition is. While not the exciting part of a story, they often add much more value to that excitement and help to establish a motif or theme, especially for viewers who - relatively and ironically - may be normies to the genre. Also, this may be a destination-vs.-journey kind of issue. Like Pat mentioned, watching Demon Slayer after watching Death Note may skew expectations. Shows like Death Note have plenty of mystery going on, giving the audience major suspense about what's going to happen. IMO, Demon Slayer should be viewed somewhat like My Hero Academia - rather than a mysterious plot, both shows seem to highlight their world building and character designs with character arcs portioned here and there. Based especially on this episode's reaction discussion, I feel that the show wants you to be immersed in each scene rather than be analyzing for potential plot points.

Gonna probably get hate for this but I really only come here for Suraj and Nahid who, in my opinion, are the only people who genuinely absorb and react to the whole show. And Rana too actually.

i mean the whole point of this whole show is to show tanjiro's journey to becoming a demon slayer and his life as one too... obviously since he's a rookie he's going to come close to death more than a couple times and he's obviously gonna improve and learn tons in the middle of his fights because he's still young and learning(not to mention that these are his first fights ever). and with the thing about demons and the formality of the show, this world is completely different from ours and the concept and even humanization of the demons themselves is 100% original. it's unfair to see a couple demons at the beginning of the show and deduce that all of the demons are the characteristically the same or that there is no significant message that can be taken away from each of the fights. imo, this show focuses on the concept of humaneness, as it can be extremely debatable wether demons can be classified as "good" or not(seen in ep 22). the demons we see in this show are really interesting and all have tragic stories as they are "tragic creatures"-like rui, who was a sick little boy, unable to experience his childhood, but still longing for love, or even the demon from the final selection, who was trapped for several lifetimes and killed children to seek revenge against his captor(urokodaki--note how WE view him as inherently good).

One of the backstories was about one sister betraying the other to garner more favor. Don't think we're supposed to sympathize with that.

I really like it when this show give us the demon's back story as it tell us the whole profile of that demon, and yes it may be repetitive but it doesn't really bothered me at all. The demons back story are not only there for us to sympathize with the demon but it is also there for the closure of that character. Knowing what's his/her life before he became a demon, how did he/she turned into a demon by Muzan, and did he/she have any regrets after getting slayed. All of these questions are answered at the back story and I'm really glad for the authors for adding those back stories.

I'm glad you guys are discussing how repatitive it is. Because it stops being that from this point on :P

Are you watching this series with your eyes open Lol missing on many points and not even understanding many aspects of the story and characters you are blaming the show and writing It wud have been okay if yur assumptions had some logic and stronghold But I can see where you are coming from and what kind of mentality level some of you(guy in the left with yellow shirt and the guys in the right panel) have.

A lot of the time we learn the demons backstory as the demons remember them because most demons eventually forget their origins over time. Also I'm not saying it isn't repetitive right now, but if you wanna compare it to other animes I would say you guys are watching Naruto and how shounen handle backstory is fairly similar across series.

This discussion is interesting to watch. Basically if you dislike or tepid on a series you'll nit pick things that you enjoyed in another series i.e chris complaining about 4 episode long fights while simultaneously enjoying other shonens (attack on titan) that do the same thing as suraj pointed out. Similary If you really like a series you'll jump to the defence of the apparent flaws that you might criticise if done in another series you dont enjoy as much.

I think in a sense I agree to Tanjiro, he's gonna give justice to demons that have hurt human beings, that does not mean he can understand the tragedy that is to be a demon in some level. Demons were once human, some of then does not even want to be the monster they're now, they have to pay the wrongs of their choices, but that does not mean the demon slayers have to be senseless killing machines.

The backstories are one of my fav parts of the anime... their arguments r so so bad wth.... the mc is a sympathetic character so the point is to make up our mind if demons r bad like Giyu says or feel sorry for them like Tanjiro. “Desensitised” 🤦🏽‍♂️ just remove the 2 on the left and the 2 on the right. They just ruin the reaction. They’re complaining about every single shounen. There will obv be a fight arc where they then move forward after. So ignorant bruh. I think we're missing the point. The writers are not trying to make us feels bad for the demon per se but the human behind the demon. Remember they were turned as in zombified and some demons like Rui or 'Mother' Spider-demon are written in a way that tells us that they're not themselves anymore by showing us how they've lost their humanity to the point where they've completely forgot who they were and what their real names are. That's why if we paid attention, especially after the end of season 2, the idea of killing demons is to free the person inside whose lives had been robbed. The writers wanted us to hate the demons and feels bad for the person imprisoned inside.

eh, i would not equate demons to 'serial killers or child pedophiles' that is a completely different thing altogether. meanwhile, this is fiction. i would definitely equate being a demon to joining the dark side. being selfless vs being selfish. once you become a demon, it's constant internal suffering, until you are able to find the light and want forgiveness, just like rui.

The main point of the demons' backstories is that it shows you how evil Muzan is (by constantly taking advantage of humans that are in bad situations) and that by becoming a demon the first thing that they kill is their own humanity. Many of them literally lose their memories of when they were humans and many almost involuntarily kill their human side by feeding once they turn into a demon.
