Tried this out with Word Bearers, and it worked amazing. I used the following paint layers. Stipple Gal-Vorbak red base -> Stipple 1-1 mix Gal Vorbak red/Word Bearers red over the base similar to how you did your zamesi desert layer -> Word Bearers Red -> Contrast Then glazed back up in a similar manner, only difference was adding an even brighter layer of VERY thinned down Wazdakka red on top for a final bolder highlight on the extremes of the model. Fantastic method of painting you've shown and even though they look good on camera this effect looks even better in person.

Amazing stuff and aweseome results! Now, to all people who say they deliberately won't use any oils or enamels or airbrushes: That's fair, but if you can, do yourselves a favour and get these materials. Otherwise, you actively and consciously make work harder and more time-consuming for yourselves without any real benefit. This one is worth stepping out of your comfort zones. The first step may be scary, granted, but once you've got the first little bit of the hang of it, you'll realise that not using those tools and materials is like consciously tying one arm behind your back, with respect to both time and quality. Experiment, take the plunge, and learn. If you can and your finances allow for a half-decent airbrush, do it.

Very thorough and approachable tutorial, great work! I struggle with stuff like consistent light indication, so the useful tidbits throughout the video are really valuable. I recently finished a (slightly converted) heresy chaplain, really proud of it, first time i tried NMM (using the Sotek Green actually), to middling degrees of success. For the plume I found a gradient from Screamer Pink up to Evil Sunz Scarlet with some Carroburg Crimson for the inbetween steps works really nicely, especially since I tend to go quite muted with my overall tones and finish. The shading on the yellow armor looks really good, and boy, that Bolter is something else... kinda makes me wanna try ImpFists myself... Once I finish all my other WIPs...
@schemeinggeneral
@schemeinggeneral Жыл бұрын
As well as using matte varnish to seal the weathering powder, you can also use a squirt of isopropyl alcohol. It's super important not to touch the model afterwards, as it will strip paint, but a light spray will soak into the pigment, dries fast, and kinda 'soaks into' the paint below helping adhere it.

I have also used Tamiya clear over a metallic zenithal and that works a treat. Richard - have you ever tried using Tamiya panel lining inks on marines? I find they work REALLY well for a super crisp and clean finish if you apply over a layer of varnish.

Little bit of threadomancy here, but if you were going to paint a large chunk of models at a time (whole army 40-50, maybe 5-10 at a time) how would you alter your recipe? Would you spend the same amount of time on each guy? or would you cut some corners? Lovely work and I am tempted to go with your color choice for contrast wash (darkoath flesh) over the one I picked up (gharagak's sewer) because the darkoath seems to have a warmer tone to the colder gharagak. Well done boss, lovely paint job!

I'm using the Forge World decals rather than the ones that come in the box. A few coats of Micro Set should sort them out, but if you are still getting creases, then before the decals are dry but after an hour or so of sticking them on, roll over them with a cotton bud (not rub, roll!). It will remove any air bubbles and flatten them down.

@Bodkin_Ye_Pointy

So, as promised I watched all the way through. 1. Technically this is a very very good video. Sound levels are steady and even. Lighting is good. Camera work always in focus and your presentation must have gone by script because you did not waffle or wonder from the subject. People do not realise how much attention to detail is required to do this. 2. Art work sucked. You chose the most labour intensive painting style that required hours to complete and then whinged it was not as good as an airbrush or as quick. Anyone could take that colour scheme and, using a paint brush, do it in one third of the time. And then you use an undiluted contrast paint to work it in the same fashion as an oil paint and whinge again that the oil paint would have been easier. 3. Look up the definition of a glaze and a wash. Because undiluted contrast paint is not and never was meant to be a wash. You could have used Agrax Earthshade or Griffin Sepia for washes and taken your time in their use and application. The whole point of the video as I gleaned it from the title was how to paint without airbrush and oils. Not how to substitute them. Your yellow glaze was not even close. It was opaque going onto the armour and opaque on the mixing palette. 4. Finally, and I do acknowledge that this part is to taste, but your secondary work like highlight and chipping is flawed. How is it that the highest point of the model, the crest on the helmet does not get light highlights on the flat. It is the highest most exposed part of the model to the light source. In the mean time, why rhinox hide for the chipping. It is getting tiring watching artists decide that battle wear is appropriate on the armour and then show chipping that would suggest rust. Well no, read the lore. The suits are ceramic in nature and the colour of the suit is not painted on but impregnated throughout the suit. There is no metal to rust. Further, this is an elite unit and so their weaponry gets attention daily and after a battle. There is no rust on the barrel because they don't want the weapon to disintegrate in their hand from use. If a modern infantry soldier is used to cleaning and caring for his weapon then monastic monks would be fanatical about it. p.s. The sergeant is not equipped properly. He would not be carrying a heavy bolter. They would be issued to the troopers as it is the sergeant's job to direct their fire and control the balance of the troops. Also he gets to look good with bolt pistol, sword and Marvin the Martian head crest.

Hahahaha, amazing! This is a brilliant troll post, either that or you're a bit stupid. The confidence you give to your ignorance is beautiful. This did not require hours to do, you don't understand what a wash or a glaze is, everything you commented is wrong! That includes the sergeant weapons!

Seriously dude? You run a tutorial demonstrating painting techniques that do not require an airbrush where you stipple on heavily watered down paint and lament in the first four minutes at least five times it is not as fast as an airbrush? If you are worried about speed then you could have simply done two parts water to the paint and simply layered the paint onto the model choosing how much of the shade you left. Further you would probably have achieved a smoother finish and more quickly than an airbrush. The point at which I stopped the play was 4:03 and you had just begun to stipple on the yellow. I will watch through because it is as important to see the bad styles as the good ones. But based on the finish from the undercoats I don't hold much hope for the balance of the work.
