Class 205/6 (3T) DEMU cab from Southampton Central to Portsmouth Harbour, 1990. Filmed prior to the lines electrification throughout the camera is in the power car so lot of engine effects. No commentary just cab chat.

Often took this journey in the 80s/90s either from Southampton or Eastleigh. Thank you for sharing

Thanks for sharing, I grew up in Portsmouth and I believe this was filmed 1989 as there are class 156’s on the Portsmouth/Cardiffs that pass by which replaced the class 155’s temporarily from January 1989 due to door issues I believe, and from about May onwards the 155’s slowly returned back and don’t recall any in 1990, so ‘m picking summer 1989 as there is one class 155 arriving at Fratton. Also I reckon that was filmed around 3:30ish off Southampton as the 156 that overtook just after leaving Fratton ran right behind the stopper around that time (ran fast from Fareham to Portsmouth and Southsea) whereas other timings were further apart. Also it’s great to see the original stations as Bitterne, Sholing, Hamble, Portchester, Hilsea all lost their wooden/concrete shelters to 'bus shelter' types which you can see Bursledon had already succumbed to. Some lost their canopies too and Cosham lost all the up side canopy, ladies toilet, gentlemen’s toilet, plus waiting room to just a single plastic ‘bus shelter’ type. That all happened just prior to Electrification, the stations I listed all got a modernisation which I guess reduced maintenance costs.

I notice an offshoot after leaving fareham which i assume used to go towards gosport? Is this what has now become Henry Court Way, the bus lane?

What a great video, i love cab ride vids, i also like the in cab conversations , many people hate "cab chat" between the driver and colleague but i think it gives you an insite into railway knowledge . Dont get me wrong, commentry is ok with station details etc but i personally prefer crew chat as you get important info into the routes and stock working there. Im off on the Hastings Diesels unit on the upcoming trip to Guildford on the 6th January as i love the Hastings units, sister units to the "Hampshire "unit seen here.

Change at Fareham for Wickham, Droxford and stations to Alton. If only.

Ah those thumpers were rough old things, acceleration was no better than 3-car blue square power twins. Ear muffs required in the motor coach! Nice memories all the same.

This is a trip I've made many times, either as a journey or as part of a stretch, and quite enjoyed the video (other than, sorry, the somewhat relentless prattling of one of the men), I know the Southampton-Portsmouth line hadn't even been continuously welded as late as 1983 and beyond (or at least parts of it), but I was genuinely staggered to learn that the same stretch still hadn't been electrified as late as 1990. Couple of questions, one genuine and the other more out of curiosity. Why didn't the driver use the windscreen wiper at Fareham - did those units not have washer fluid? And the other is, do drivers acknowledge another driver coming in the opposite direction in a similar way bus drivers do?

No third rail between Southampton and portsmouth?

Not at that time,no. They were doing it early in the 90's.
