Just a side note, if you wanted to forego resting it for a year in order to get a better bloom display, it is possible to trick it. If you can give it consistently warm temps (day and night), not shorten the day length (keep it 11 hours or more) and continue to feed and water, it will happily grow through the winter and on through the following year. In doing so, you can triple or quadruple the number of available canes for blooming. Growers will often do this for show display/judging, where they can have a giant, leafed out plant in full bloom. The one caveat of doing this, as soon as the buds have formed you must start feed and water or the plant can literally bloom itself to death. This technique can be applied to some other winter resting types, such as amethystoglossum but don't try this with an annually deciduous species like anosmum or aphyllum, it doesn't work.

Thanks so much Shirley! Let me know if you decide to give them a try! They have a reputation for being difficult, but I think if you separate your collection with resting an not resting orchids, it's just fine and makes it easier to remember not to water / feed. Appreciate you always dropping by

On a orchid forum someone noted a well known grower gets decent results with orchids that need a cool rest, but can't be given one, with ice cubes. Along with the standard no fertilizer/reduced watering/reduced light period, every second night for two weeks they put an ice cube/s on top of the media. I haven't tried it yet but plan to. Would be nice if it's that easy. I plan to try it with my orchid and thanksgiving cactus too.

I have learned that 8f you change den.nobilies environment a lot,they tend to throw away their roots. I have a dendrobium nobile that was indors and I took it outside not so long ago. I didn't overwatter and today I foumd out that a lot of new roots rotted.
@NicoleDeanna

That's unfortunate. I hope it pulls through! You only want to change the environment during the change of season.

Hi Nicole, thank you for this video! I transferred all of my orchids into moss this year. I'm getting good at it. My question is this, I keep my orchids that can be in full sun under a covered deck because I'm afraid of what will happen. I'm scared if, for example, I went out for the day and there was a downpour, that something disastrous would happen. What do you do about plants in mostly or all moss that have no protection from rain?
@NicoleDeanna
@NicoleDeanna 11 ай бұрын
You have to bring it in to make sure they dry. In nature they aren't in pots so it's nbd, but pots accumulate a ton of water. Thanks for watching!

Quick question! I just got a nobile from Carmela’s orchids and it lost some leaves but it’s summer for me and I think something might be wrong
@NicoleDeanna
@NicoleDeanna 2 жыл бұрын
Leaf drop can happen with a change in environment. It's probably shocked between the change in the greenhouse at Carmela's orchids and your conditions. Water and feed it well and all should pull through it and get used to your conditions if you got a healthy orchid. Orchids are resilient! If you notice it keeps declining in a few weeks I'd contact Carmela and get their feedback!

Hi Ron! I'm so glad you were able to find one. I adore mine! It's got such a lovely little subtle fragrance and it's cute as a button. It does have nobile in it, but it's got other hybrids in it. According to orchids dot org: Den. moniliforme (33%) + Den. nobile (28%) + Den. heterocarpum (13%) + Den. findleyanum (11%) are the top parents. I don't give it a full on winter rest with lower temps, but I reduce the fertilizer. It's so hybridized that I don't think it needs the same exact care as a nobile. You could stop fertilizing in the winter if you see it's not pushing canes, and resume in the spring, but you can continue to water and all should be ok. :)
@woowooone
@woowooone 11 ай бұрын
And you said that it is potted in coconut husk and sphagnum moss. Would you say that most dendrobiums, if you are wanting to transition them into moss, should be having something like that added into the moss so that it will dry quicker? I know that there are lots of variables. I live in Virginia and want to keep my dens, and catts in more full sun conditions. The moss on the ones with no cover and full sun dries out quickly, but since I don't live in paradise, I only get to keep my plants outside for 3 - 4 months a year. When they come inside, that's a whole new ballgame. So I'm curious as to what you think.
@NicoleDeanna
@NicoleDeanna 11 ай бұрын
Either works you just need to get the watering right. Moss will need to be watered less whereas bark needs to be watered very often, it really depends on how often you can dedicate to watering them. I like moss bc it can retain more moisture because I can't water as much

Why is the stem on my plant going wrinkly.my niece had it before me and I think she overwatered it too much.
@NicoleDeanna
@NicoleDeanna 2 ай бұрын
Could be that the roots rotted. Could also be that it's an old growth that's dying off which is normal. If you have new growths coming in that aren't wrinkly you're ok, if they are all wrinkly, i'd inspect the roots and repot.
