Where did FH said that Paul was a hero? If anything the entirety of the Dune series is a cautionary tale against putting all of our faith/eggs under A LEADER/MESSIAH/etc. Edit: To everyone replying to this comment. Make sure to first read what I wrote underneath. Goddammit!

@@igunashiodesu ill be honest, I haven't read all the Dune books so I'm not sure the whole story. But I know Paul is supposedly the Messiah but he turns out to be more of a villain or maybe anti-hero. I don't know the full story. I basically meant, I know some previously attached people have been more like "Paul is the Messiah" in one way or another, so at least seeing someone acknowledge "Paul is problematic" is a step in the right direction. But again, I don't know a ton about the books or the adaptations, it just seems to me like this guy is going in the right direction based on what I know, but I could be wrong.

​@@wolfegaming36My bad. I completely misheard/misunderstood what Villeneuve said. I thought that he said that Frank Herbert saw the character of Paul Atreides as some sort of hero. What he claims is a more correct appreciation of the character being more of an “anti-hero”. In the end, Paul is more of a tragic character who has redeeming qualities and benevolent intentions, but as the old adage goes: “hell is paved with good intentions.”

Denis Villeneuve is one of the most passionate and proficient directors nowadays, I highly recommend watching arrival, sicario, blade runner 2047 and most of all: prisoners, from him

Ive read the book and MANNN dune messiah is the best part for the paul atreides arc... cant wait for dune messiah and maybe in 10 years from now, Children of dune.

I want it now but it'll be end of the decade for sure. The characters are older and significant time passes between the books. It'll also be nice to see Denis tackle a new project inbetween, the man is too good to keep working under one franchise. Who knows - if we're lucky, it might be another scifi.

So many epic shots in this film. The one you described, the Harkonenn soldiers levitating up the rocks, the emperor's ship descending over Arakeen, "LONG LIVE THE FIGHTERS"... my personal favorite might be the overhead shot of Paul walking through the Fremen though

I’ve seen it twice in imax (Thursday and yesterday) and I cannot stop thinking about it!

I may go and see it a second time. At a time when movies have been horrible and cinemas are full of reboots that nobody asked for, Dune is such a breath of fresh air.

@@GlasgowMick50the irony is that Dune is both a reboot of Lynch's 1984 version (and a couple of miniseries on SyFy) and a book adaptation. super hilarious to me that in a world of remakes, reboots, sequels, content based off of comics and games, Dune is so good that its considered none of those things.

It took multiple readings for me to get it. Each time I read it at various times in my life, and varying levels of maturity, I took something different from it.

The first half of the book is coaxing you into think he really is the good guy. Dune Messiah is about Paul being a false prophet. He still has to convey that in the third movie. Everyone who didn’t read the books thinks Dune 2 is a great hero story. I had to tell my brother the truth 😂 shit gets dark

He is in a way a tragic figure: he saw the future and knew he had to do all these horrible things to safe humanity - and even then the chance was slim. If he wouldn't have started the Jihad it would have ended worse for humanity. It's all revealed when his son Leto II becomes god-emperor and follows the Golden Path.

Denis will not do a Dune project that is not anchored in Herbert’s own writings. “Dune: Messiah” will be the final Dune project for Denis.

HBO has the show coming out too tho so we will see where it starts n leads to finish. It may be decent but nothing will touch how amazing this part 2 was. It was absolutely insane in Dbox and AVx and I can only image in IMax. Which I’m stoked to see this week.

@@RisastoleM2314 He said in an interview at some point that as the books go on, they start to get increasingly esoteric and difficult to follow, which is absolutely true. I think Messiah is a perfect stopping point; audiences need a main character to follow, and Paul makes his exit at the end of Messiah.

It will be too weird because these films are quite realistic imagine having god worms and spice addicted navigators and stuff would be a strange jump and not fit very well for the films

That's a really good point!

If he picks the bad ending just to give people a lesson and change history in a way the audience isnt expecting is INSANE, and if it has to do with trasncendece it also show how an inhuman thing would think. That's brilliant, i think might especially work as a plot twist. It's also certainly a thing a villain with good intentions would do.

Paul doesn't do anything for the greater good. He uses the Fremen to get revenge despite knowing the Jihad that will result for it. Then he rules like a despot, genocides 61 billion people, then nopes out because he isn't willing to go all in and save humanity. Paul was a human. He did bad things for good reasons, and good things for bad reasons.

I liked parts of messiah it was very good and interesting. But hated the ending for Paul. I respect it and understand why. But disliked that ending. Just felt it could have been better.

I completely agree with you, the girl who played her friend totally should have been cast in this role. She didn’t even modify her voice. She sounds like she’s from California. Everybody else worked hard and it seems like she showed up and thought “you guys are just lucky to have me I’m Zendaya”. They cast her because she’s Hollywood’s it girl right now. Timothée Chalamet proved himself as Paul in this movie but Zendaya just proved she’s terrible. it’s just such a glaringly poor casting in an otherwise beautifully crafted movie.

In all fairness Timothee didn’t do an accent same as zendaya, but at least he changed the entire way he spoke before and after drinking the water of life. Zendaya felt like a carbon copy of MJ in the spider man movies ngl, from her expressions to her attitude to her speaking etc

@@K-3619 Exactly. To her credit, her friend did not have a strong accent either, but she was still more believable as a Fremen. But yeah carbon copy MJ. Seeing her took me out of the moment. I was thinking “please show me Stilgar”. It’s not like seeing him made me think of Anton Chigur. Dude had me cracking up.

This is gonna sound really nitpicky but I remember two scenes in particular where she said something along the lines of “you tell them a messiah will come, then they’ll wait, for centuries” and the “you come from a land of dukes and barons…” which both made me cringe rather than side with her regarding the dangers of religious fervor and fremen culture

Like she made him a bigger hero than he was actually supposed to be. Which goes against the point of the story

They completely changed Chani which will probably completely change the third movie, they changed Paul quite a lot, they completely left out multiple important power groups, the emperor is basically some random dude that just happens to be there, they pretty much completely changed Alia, they didn't really explore Feyd and so on.

It's a nonsense. You could leave Chani out completely and the point about Paul would still come across. It's just a lazy appeal to certain people. Once again making the typical strong young female character with masculine characteristics. And that's while having source material where there are plenty of strong female characters and the fricking bene Gesserit. But in my opinion Jessica was done well.

@martinsoukup562 Jessica was ok, but I didn't like the fixation on vilifying her character so much. She was conflicted, but ultimately, her beni geserate training kicked in, and even that was ultimately overshadowed at points for the love of her son. I didn't like how her and Chani were butting heads. At the very end of Dune in the books, she even comforted Chani, and I was really looking forward to their dynamics. Instead, it's just Jessica controlling even Chani when, in truth, she relied on her to help Paul, SMH.
