it will be pretty good, not fantastic as his best films are ones that do not deal with sci fi. Chalamet in the lead and Zimmer on the keys is not too good of an omen. Not having Roger Deakins behind the camera is pretty worrying too, that mans style is built for stuff like dune.

'ARRIVAL' is the most important sci-fi film ever made. In a world where improvement in technology has only broken down communication among humans, this film is a gentle, philosophical reflection on where we have reached and how would be even respond if 'aliens' would ever come.

Controversially, I am not a fan of his Blade Runner film, though I don't think the fault is his per say. That said, I respect that he took the money and made the movie. It showed guts. The movie, though not as good as the original, was at least liked, but had it bombed, he would of had a hard time making a film that big for a while. The lessons he learned from BR will help him in Dune and I think he'll do something cool with this project.
@davidlean1060
@davidlean1060 4 жыл бұрын
@GiRayne Controversial because in this day and age of outrage culture, saying you dislike something considered a good piece (movie, music etc), people get mad! I gave the sequel 2 goes in the cinema and I felt underwhelmed both times. Other than the opening scene (which was written for the original by the way) I just did not like it as much as the first movie. I can't lie. I could go in to why I don't like the 2nd film, but I would only bore you. Not taking anything away from your enjoyment though, it's only this man's opinion. My point wasn't that though. Let's face it, the movie could of gone tits up, been a disaster and been considered as such. That would of been Villeneuve done with big budgets for a while. He still took the project on despite the expectation and hats off for having the stones to do that. It will of won him a few favors too and that can only be good for him in the future.

These videos are awesome. So much work and research damn. I think your videos would benefit from a stronger approach to your titles and thumbnails. A lot of video essayists are using the thumbnail as almost an alternate title, and I think it's really effective. Gives the viewer as much information as possible to draw you in. Most people aren't familiar with directors, they're familiar with titles and actors. I think that if, while you edit, finding some kind of motif to work around and then using that as a title, for example, if a large focus of Denis Villeneuve was being faithful to the screenplay, the title could be: "Arrival--Artistic Liberty and Staying True to the Screenplay" and then your thumbnail would be "How Villeneuve directed Arrival" or vice versa. But anyway. Great vid. Video essayists are my favorite youtube channels atm. Great work!
@Jilloms
@Jilloms 4 жыл бұрын
Firstly, thank you so much for watching the videos :) The work and research is 100% worth it. I do want to develop stronger thumbnails and titles to further set apart this channel from others. I also agree that the alternate thumbnail title can work extremely well and will continue to think on how to improve my own while still keeping them true to the content of the video. Since this channel is a bit different from a film essayist channel, I still want to keep a hard line between a more eye catching title and who the video is actually being narrated by, which may be helped by the alternate thumbnail. I will continue to think on this and see what works. I really appreciate you taking the time to offer advice. It definitely helps to see!

My fave 3 sci-fi would be Solaris, Arrival and Contact. I think there is some similarity between the last two.

I absolutely ADORE this movie. It’s stunning well-written, acted, and directed, and the VFX are pristine. I would even argue that it helped me get through the pandemic, as I watched it multiple times during that period. So it’s heartbreaking to hear a Director whom I DEEPLY respect, diminish the importance of the very kind of work that I, and many of my friends engage in, within the movie industry.

I hope this very talented director will not become the next Stephen Soderberg. One great film - PRISONERS - one flop - ENEMY - top: SICARIO - flop: ARRIVAL ... P. and S. are such great, realistic, gritty, intense movies. Please stay in this venue, Denis!

This movie is impossible without VFX artists. I wish Directors would stop badmouthing the entire post-production department. And FYI, “practical effects” are VFX. There is no movie out there, which fails to use both, in collaboration with each other. IDK what the heck is going on with the DGA and the studios, but they need to stop with this diminishment of more than HALF their staff. It typically takes THOUSANDS of visual effects artists to pull off these movies, and they deserve respect for having delivered 11 of the top 12 grossing films of all time, that could not have been achieved any other way.

The directing was amazing but understanding the alien language narrative was not developed enough. It was resolved in a quick montage. Such a shame...

Ryder E yeah but take a moment to read A topiary screenplay from Shane Carruth. There a group of people try all their lives to decrypt alien language. Now that is accurate, not like in Arrival- where it’s resolved in the middle of the movie...

After watching the video of the guy who wrote this movie, I feel like Denis is taking A LOT of the credit for some of the greatest aspects of this film. It’s discomforting.
