Denmark & Korea Battle For Olympic Handball Gold - Athens 2004 Olympics

Korea and Denmark have a great Olympic history in women's handball and the two teams met again to battle for the gold medal at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games.
The previous gold medal match encounter at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games had been decided in the extra-time by 37-33. Not surprisingly, once again it was the case.
This time, after both teams alternating the leading position on the scoreboard, Korea had the lead at 34-33 with only 15 seconds left to go. Still the Danes would not give up, and with a last chance vital goal, now Denmark and Korea would decide on a penalty shoot-out.
The Danish team kept its nerves and with a 4x2 shootout victory, Denmark was once again the women's handball Olympic gold medalist

Without doubt one of the most epic finals in Olympics. I compare to the finals of Soviet Union and United States in men's basketball Munich/1972 and Soviet Union X Peru in women's volleyball in Seoul/ 1988. For me those are the top 3 finals in Olympic history

The description is wrong: The previous Olympic gold medal match between Denmark and South Korea that also went into overtime was in Atlanta 1996, not Sydney 2000.

I tip my hat to all handball players. What a difficult sport. The goalie has to be extra flexible to block shots. Bravo. I've not seen this sport before but WOW.

In this Final was the fantastic South Korea Team 3-4 goals better as the fantastic Denmark Team. I am an european handball fan, but I am sorry for this match from the south-korean fans. This goldmedal won the Refererees for Danmark.

In fact, the current baseball world champions are the Netherlands. USA only came in 4th. Other than that, baseball isn't even close to being popular in the Netherlands either..

"How is handball an Olympic sport but baseball isn't?" Because baseball is extremely borrrring? ;-) And baseball is mostly played (at top level) in the US and just a few places more, whereas handball is played in many countries and the number is quickly increasing.

baseball gold medal match in beijing olympic was quite interesting. the 9th inning with 1 out, base loaded, and korea ending game with double play.... it was quite good

Way too easy to score and there isnt much of defense to play, game has a lot of flaws, should at least make the nets smaller.

@@zeddy4253 It has been Olympic 6 times. Cuba has 5 medals ( 3 gold+ 2 silver ), and USA has 4 ( 1 gold+ 1 silver + 2 bronze and Dominican Republic has 1 bronze. That seems to validate calling it an "american sport". I was in Yucatan ( southern Mexico ) in 1979-1980, and I remember seeing various baseball fields there. I have not seen that anywhere else I visited! since then.

The Referee was too tilted to the Denish's side. Korea should have won. It was so unfair when Korea made a goal and the referee did not count as a point. It was a unfair game. So disappointed.

I watched this game. The referee was a complete Danish. There were too many nonsense verdicts. South Korea were robbed Gold medals.
