Dennis Franz is guest on 'The Late Late show with Tom Snyder' in this full 1997 interview. Dennis talks about his father; Franz's character Andy Sipowicz on the series NYPD Blues; his experience/service in the Vietnam War; co-star Nick Turturro and Franz's shares some family memories.
Dennis Franz (b.1944), is a retired American actor best known for his role as Detective Andy Sipowicz in the ABC television series NYPD Blue (1993-2005), a role that earned him a Golden Globe Award, three Screen Actors Guild Awards and four Primetime Emmy Awards. He also portrayed Lt. Norman Buntz in the similar NBC series Hill Street Blues (1985-1987) and its short-lived spinoff, Beverly Hills Buntz (1987-1988).
Tom Snyder (1936 - 2007) was an American pioneering television personality and figure in broadcast journalism who brought a no non-sense attitude to broadcast television news. He was best known for his late nigh talk shows Tomorrow (NBC) and The Late Late Show with Tom Snyder (CBS). His engaging style combined with his irascible attitude, made him one of the best known journalists of his time, back when having a nationally televised and thought provoking late night talk show actually meant something. It was a totally different time in television, as the news was delivered as information with no spin or opinion of the newsman. He marked the end of an era.

I`ve just started watching NYPD Blue from the start again, on season 4 now and after not watching it for many years I now totally appreciate just how good it was, Dennis Franz`s acting is stellar! To watch the character develop into what he was when it ended is a fascinating journey...

The Heroes & Icons cable network (H&I) runs 4 episodes Mon-Fri starting at midnite. Using my DVR I've been able to record them all and then watch at my convenience with some great binge watching. I've been able to watch all 12 years of the show in 3 and a half months. Probably my favorite series of all time.

One of the better - and most enjoyable - interviews I’ve seen. I loved that Dennis said, of Vietnam: “... I’m not sure about course, but I’d like to see the country in peacetime. It’s an enchanting, beautiful country.” I was living in VN at the time of this interview, and I’m so pleased he said that. He’s a mensch.

Man lucky for you! I watched it starting in 94, second season and followed it loyally every week as it aired til the last episode. And I've watched it several times since then online. Sipowicz is in my Top 3 Favorite Characters Ever and Franz played him beautifully. Terrific cop show and great drama. When you get to the final couple of seasons, you'll notice that the nudity and profanity ramps up in order to compete with networks and shows like FX and The Shield and Rescue Me.

Even as a kid I was night owl, and I spent many a wee hour with Tom watching him have conversation with interesting people. I think he was a fantastic interviewer and had a infectious horse laugh, that always made me smile. Seems like his talents were underrated. My teenage eyes saw Tom as a really really old guy and the show’s set-up seemed kinda borning - Not exactly like Johnny…. But I more often than not found myself becoming engrossed in the show, getting a real-life take on the luminaries of the day. If you never saw it, I think you might like viewing some Snyder on KZfaq - you’ll probably see what I mean.
