This is a gem! Back in those days, when you had a daytime and a nighttime version of the same show hosted by two different people, if your daytime host couldn't make it to the taping, then you called your nighttime host to pinch hit for him. Dennis was as great a host as Bob! Nice pants, too! By the way, Bob missed this taping with a strained back, so Dennis substituted here.

James was a regular substitute host for Monty Hall on Let's Make a Deal beginning in January 1972, when he caught the attention of Mark Goodson and Bill Todman , who were putting together The New Price Is Right for syndication; the new format would incorporate the original format from 1956-1965 with elements from Let's Make a Deal. James and Goodson co-hosted a promotional film, selling stations on the 1972 revival of the show, which was originally hosted by James's fellow TV pioneer Bill Cullen. CBS (at the time re-entering the game show market after four years without any) agreed to pick up a daytime version of the show, but insisted on Truth or Consequences host Bob Barker as host. Barker took the daytime show, which he hosted until 2007, while James hosted a weekly version for the syndicated market, which aired in the "access period" leading into prime time and was thus known as "the nighttime Price Is Right". James hosted the weekly show from 1972-77, and also filled in for Barker during four daytime episodes in December 1974, becoming the first substitute host of the CBS version. James's departure from the nighttime show in 1977 marked the end of his game show career.

As I recall Bob Barker took over hosting The Nighttime Price Is Right after Dennis James left and continued hosting that until it was canceled in 1980. But why did James leave and why didn't he host anymore shows afterwards?

At the time of this episode of the daytime "Price Is Right" in December 1974, Bob Barker had a bad back, so Dennis James filled in as host. James was the host of the nighttime "Price Is Right". James had a claim to infamy as emcee. On one show while playing Cliff Hangers, he referred to the mountain climber as "Hans" . Janice Pennington was upset over this; her husband was lost in a mountain climbing accident.

Was Dennis James still subbing for Monty Hall on LMAD in March 1972. If so, that's another way that Dennis James and Tom Kennedy would be compatible. Dennis subbing on Let's Make a Deal would then coincide with Tom doing Split Second. It also happened Dennis hosted 1974 daytime Name That Tune and Tom doing syndicated/nighttime Name That Tune. There was Dennis hosting the UCP Telethon and Tom doing the Arthritis Telethon. That might have been the factors that contributed to Tom being selected for the 1985 syndicated/nighttime TPIR.

nickellodeon55 Bill Cullen was unavailable because at the time he was hosting THREE ON A MATCH for NBC...the revived version was originally only going to be a once-a-week nighttime show for syndication, which Goodson and Todman had James already committed to host. At the last minute CBS wanted a version for its daytime schedule and decided to have Barker.
@ajk5 жыл бұрын
Well there was also the issue that Bill couldn't walk as much like this show required/requires since he had Polio. Don't forget that. It's amazing to consider BTW that Price was not meant to be a daytime show at first. You wonder if it'd still exist today if it didn't, especially without Barker in the beginning.
