Bio: Deniss Makena (Dennis McKenna) ir amerikāņu etnofarmakologs, pētnieciskais farmakologs, domātājs, lektors, autors un Dabas filozofijas akadēmijas dibinātājs. Vairāk nekā četrdesmit gadus viņa zinātnisko pētījumu, interešu un aktivitāšu fokusā ir halucinogēnie augi. Kā arī sinerģijas meklējumi - starp Rietumu zinātni un senajām pirmtautu zināšanām; zinātni un misticismu. Deniss Makena ir pārliecināts, ka cilvēces nākotne iespējama tikai simbiozē - starp cilvēku un dabu.
Kopā ar brāli - leģendāro un nu jau aizsaulē esošo psihedēlijas bardu Terensu Makenu - Deniss Makena pieder visu laiku uzticīgākajiem un zinošākajiem psihedēlijas advokātiem. Sākot no tās “ziedu laikiem” 20. gadsimta 70. gados, kā arī aizlieguma laikā un šobrīd - tā dēvētās psihedēlijas renesanses periodā, kuru iezīmē daudzviet pasaulē aizsāktais halucinogēno augu dekriminalizācijas process.
Denisam Makenam ir Britu Kolumbijas Universitātes doktora grāds botāniskajās zinātnēs (1984). Viņš ir arī Heftera izpētes institūta līdzdibinātājs, valdes loceklis un etnofarmakoloģijas vadītājs.
2018. gadā Deniss Makena nodibināja Makenas dabas filozofijas akadēmiju (The McKenna Academy of Natural Philosophy), kas kā savu mērķi definējusi “sekmēt simbiotisku un evolucionāru partnerību ar visas planētas sentiento sugu kopību.”

Dr. Dennis McKenna in conversation with Una Meistere at the international on-line conference “Psychedelics: the game-changer in mental health and medical science.” The conference organised by NGO “Veselīga Latvija” (Healthy Latvia) and cultural and humanities portal Arterritory.com/Spiriterritory.com took place on May 17, 2023 in Riga, Latvia.
Bio: Dennis McKenna is an American ethnopharmacologist, research pharmacognosist, lecturer, author, and Founder of the McKenna Academy of Natural Philosophy (www.mckenna.academy) dedicated to the study of plant medicines, consciousness, preservation of indigenous knowledge, and a re-visioning of humanity’s relationship with Nature.
Dennis McKenna is a founding board member and the director of ethnopharmacology at the Heffter Research Institute, a non-profit organization concerned with the investigation of the potential therapeutic uses of psychedelic medicines, and was a key organizer and participant in the Hoasca Project, the first biomedical investigation of ayahuasca used by the UDV, a Brazilian religious group. He also serves on the Advisory Board of the American Botanical Council; as Founder and Executive Director for the Institute for Natural Products Research; as an Independent Research Consultant to the Phytomedicine and Nutraceutical Industry; was formerly on the Editorial Board of Phytomedicine, International Journal of Phytotherapy and Phytopharmacology; and is an Assistant Professor in the Center for Spirituality and Healing at the University of Minnesota.
Dennis McKenna received his Master’s Degree in Botany from the University of Hawaii in 1979, his Ph.D. in Botanical Sciences from the University of British Columbia in 1984, and continued into post-doctoral research fellowships in the Laboratory of Clinical Pharmacology, National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), and in the Department of Neurology, Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dennis McKenna’s research led to the development of natural products for the Aveda Corporation, as well as greater awareness of natural products and medicines. He has authored or co-authored over 50 peer-reviewed scientific papers and written multiple books, including “The Brotherhood of the Screaming Abyss: My Life with Terence McKenna”, co-author of “The Invisible Landscape” with his brother Terence, and co-author of a widely recognized reference work on herbal medicines, titled “Botanical Medicines: the Desk Reference for Major Herbal Supplements”. Dennis McKenna's publications have appeared in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology, European Journal of Pharmacology, Brain Research, Journal of Neuroscience, Journal of Neurochemistry, Economic Botany, Alternative and Complementary Therapies, and elsewhere.
