Dennis Perrin gives an oil painting demonstration. Dennis has a long history of painting botanicals and uses this universal subject to teach many aspects of painting. This live painting demonstration is sure to inspire.
About painting floral subjects, Dennis says;
"When we gaze deeply into a rose with the expectation of capturing its beauty in paint, we are treading on ground that no other has ever been or will ever go. We form a poignant bond with this demure creature. And if our minds are quiet and our hearts are soft, it’s secrets will be revealed."

Many painting demonstrations rightly point out the importance of values in colour. However his demonstration goes further and succinctly describes the importance of temperature as a crucial element of painting extracted from just 5 base colours.. Another crucial aspect of the painters technique not mentioned but observed, is the constant cleaning of his brushes with paper towels to ensure that his values and temperatures remain constant with every carefully considered brush stroke, this ensures that the painting won't get "muddy", a constant problem for many beginners. Also note that Dennis barely mentioned "roses" or " petals" in his vocabulary , this is because he is not painting roses or petals, he is painting shapes and relationships. this state of mind is summed up at 1:13:00 when a member of the audience tried to point out that a variety of one rose was harder to paint, his reply was priceless : "..only if you think of them as roses....it will intimidate you...stay in the abstract world where there are no names, no definitions or beauty, it's just there ... when you are in the abstract world everything is the same and it's just easier to paint from that place". This video was captivating to watch.

I found one of his paintings in a thrift store a couple of months ago….I loved the pink roses set against the taupe background….I just looked his name up this evening and saw this. I am dumbfounded that it was at the thrift store. I am sorry to hear he passed away.

Wonderfull process to watch - and I am excited that you show that Winsor Newton water soluble paint and water soluble painting medium - can be so beautifull to work with - and a wonderfull palet that is shown in a phantastic way showing the importance of values, temperature - and the power of brushstrokes -

I wish we could also see the subject he was painting, so we get a better idea of how he is tackling things on the fly. To only see the stages of progress (without a finished idea of what it's going to look like), I get that syndrome where I can only see the strokes, not the whole picture of what it's aiming for. Just a tip!

I found it disgusting that a demonstration by a great artist was disrupted by noise in the audience, indifferent and disrespectful people with no understanding of the value of what they were watching, it was so disappointing that this artist wasn’t honoured for his valuable teaching, I hope to see him again in a better setting.

This is the great value of a live demonstration- that being to be able to interact with the instructor. He was honored with a large audience in close quarters and did not seem to mind any noises in the audience. In fact, he invited and warmly answered questions. Sorry you were dissapointed this time

Do you think he made this video for you? For gods sake, these people who were so 'disruptive' probably paid money to attend this event, and the artist did not seem annoyed whatsoever by the audience.
@amysbees6686

Anyone who hasn't attended an artist live demonstration has no idea what it's like. Certainly there is respectful quiet as the artist gets going, as they may be describing their materials/supplies and setup. Once things get rolling the artist encourages questions. It develops into a wonderful give and take between the artist and the attendees. This may not translate well when watches after, but I can assure you it is a very impactful experience!
