Hey man. Thanks for the great video. I used to own this amp and just recently traded it in for the 110th anniversary edition. Honestly, I believe it deserves more credit than what you give it! For one, the build quality is top notch, way higher than a $1600 unit. The tone controls are not on the remote? For sure, they are potentiometers. Did you want 3 more motors for the knobs? For the DAC, you need to be fair too. This is a $1600 amp; how much you expected to go in the DAC? I guess $50 to $100 is fair, and I personally found it on par with Schiit modi I own. For sure a $3000 DAC is superior! I cannot think of any other amp below $2000 that has tone control which I would pick/recommend over this model. The sound quality is really great. Very open and balance. It is Made in Japan which helps it keep the value too.

Thanks for you comments and for subscribing to help the channel. Its definitely a great unit for the price if it matches your speakers well. And you are right, it is built very well, and its heft shows how well it is built. But, it was too cold and analytical for my speakers, and the Gold Note PA10 was just a better, more musical amplifier for similar money (for my speakers specifically); but that unit isn't an integrated, so one does lose out on the features that you get in the case of the integrated Denon. I'll go back and watch the video again, but I think I was pretty fair actually, and I stand by my reviews, as I put a lot of thought and effort into them. I'd invite you to re-watch it as well with that, and the following information in mind. A Topping D30 and some other budget DAC models were MUCH better than the included DAC, and the tone controls were necessary with the included DAC for sure (but wouldn't be necessary if the DAC were better), and as you noted they do work well. I also am not a huge fan of the Schiit Modi either, as there are much better DACs for the price. And yes, I would have liked the tone controls to be motorized like the volume control, or digitally stepped... as I did wish to adjust them more than "set it and forget it." But like I also said, the phono section is great, and I did consider keeping it for both that feature, and its power. I'm not sure, how much more fair I could be than that? I really wasn't overly critical I don't think. Sorry if you felt I was. Hope you enjoy the unit you swapped it out for. I hear it's even better. I hope to check it out one day.

@@intoitreviews No worries. I am not trying to play the advocate for the unit (or any other model). My only worry was people thinking it is not good enough for the money. To me it really is. I have not heard every single model, and we do not all agree on different amps/speakers. Otherwise, who doesn't believe something better (for any of us) is always around the corner. And with regards to the A110, I really LOVE it! But hey, that one is more than double the price; it has to be much better ;)

I agree with Emil, this amp is a gem, I have been using the UK version of this amp with PCM 1795 DAC for about 8 Months now, it sounded unspectacular right out of the box and needed 2-3 days use before it gave it's best. Personally I find the DAC to be excellent, not thin and lacking in bass as you mention, but warm and full of life, with great stereo separation and well balanced across the frequency spectrum, the amp is super clean and airy, very Hi Res while being creamy smooth with low end and punch, it doesn't particularly play well at low volumes where the sound is a tad boring, but turn the wick up and WOW it really comes to life, punching you in the chest but still remaining composed no matter how loud you go (no nasty treble here even when at nearly full output unlike my last 3 amplifiers) it's easily capable of giving the neighbors a very bad day (I swear this thing is outputting way more than 70W per ch) Switching out the digital circuit makes it sound buttery smooth and even warmer, great for Vinyl and other analogue RCA inputs if you want it. Main niggle is the very sensitive volume control when using remote, and it's a shame the remote doesn't allow you to turn on and off source direct, that has to be done on the amp. A subwoofer out and pre line outs would have also been nice, but for a 1200 quid amp with a decent 32 bit DAC I am very happy with it. It's surprising heavy as well at just under 40lbs and I read somewhere it took on 3 or 4 other good amps like Hegel, Yamaha & NAD and come out on top and was the reviewers favorite. This in fact was the only amp I tried apart from an Arcam SA20 that tamed the tweeters on my Monitor Audio Silver 300's and made them integrate well with the music (tried Naim, Musical Fidelity, Audio Lab and Rega) It will be a keeper for a while yet.
@intoitreviews
@intoitreviews 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your paragraph. But, the UK versions of the Denon are often different, which is a possibility I alluded too in the video, and likely the case here. I hope you payed attention to the video, and understand that. Also, your ears may have adjusted, or it could be a difference with your particular speakers/setup. I test numerous speakers and combinations of particular gear for specific reasons and purpose, across a number of weeks, and generally I am talking about the performance envelope of a product in a review and not specific outcomes. And, I hate to say it, because I don't let other reviews influence mine, but if you do check out other reviews of this product, I am not the only one say the DAC has issues, and this is evidence of this before, and after, my review. So, in this particular case, there is actually some consistency there for other consumers to follow. Your experience may vary, but it doesn't mean a product performs a certain way, even if you "disagree," for whatever reason. Just "food for thought" for you, and everyone really. But, I'm glad you enjoy your amplifier, as that is what is most important, in the end; is it not?

I have the pma1600ne, and yes, this reviewer does not give the amp enough credit. About the DAC, in this amp the DAC takes a long time to break in and it is VERY GOOD! I can afford just about any DAC that I want to buy, and the internal DAC in the pma1600 is so good that I will not bother looking elsewhere.

What external dac would you recommend for this Denon? I was thinking of Gustard R26 or Gustard A26. What do you think?
@intoitreviews
@intoitreviews Жыл бұрын
Depends on price point. At that priçe it's hard to beat the RME Adi2. Gold Note DS-10 is my personal DAC of choice, but higher price. The Konus Audio Digitale series only does 16/44.1, but sounds amazing. If you want more of an analog flavor I really did enjoy the iFi neo streamer/DAC, close in price to the Gustard. If something else comes to mind, l will let you know. I'm using a FiiO R7 upstairs right now, it's ok... Better than the Denon, but I think one would need to get the power supply for it to get the most out of it. I likely won't recommend it without it... And I'm having a hard time sourcing one... It sounds pretty good... Almost there, but not quite. Power supply might fix it...?

@@intoitreviews thank you for such rapid answer. Generally speaking, this Denon should be paired with warmer sounding dac like Gustard R26 for example or just opposite ?
@intoitreviews
@intoitreviews Жыл бұрын
It's all gonna depend on your system as a whole, but yeah generally speaking, something with a touch of mellowness (amount of warmth needed will vary based on preference) that still extends well would be what I would look for. The ADI 2 will be the most neutral, followed by gold note, followed by konus, followed by the iFi. I don't tend to rec overly warm Dacs, but I also hear good things about the ef400 from HIFIMAN as a dac (it's limited somewhat and I don't like he headphone output as much). I also liked the iFi micro signature as a dac out and it was decently warm and beefy (might not have enough liquidity for the Denon though). The Diablo is kind of in between the iFi signature and the neo. Just so you know, my topping d30 which is around $100 outperformed the internal dac considerably.

I have no idea what u were doing with the dac in this amp, but the dac is outstanding. It does take a while to break the digital section in on this amp.
@intoitreviews
@intoitreviews 3 жыл бұрын
I had it for a number of months with hundreds of hours of burn in on the dac and the amp, but who knows... perhaps it needed more time. I'm also sure on a less revealing set of speakers it might also be fine. I tend to be more picky than most as well, but I'm also not the only one to point out the DAC as the deficit of this amp- if you look at other reviews there is a consensus. @intoitreviews
@intoitreviews 6 ай бұрын
There are lots of good options depending on price. My favorite DAC atm would the konus digitale series as great pricier options. Next step down might be looking at the RME ADI-2, but there also many other dacs that could work. I got better performance from a topping d30 than the integrated DAC, but I'd probably look next at a iFi micro idsd as an option if you are okay with single ended performance only (those are about $600ish, and have a muscle car like performance/would likely match well depending on your speakers). Hope that helps and thanks for supporting the channel by subscribing!

You'll have to use a high level input from your subwoofer from the Speaker B post. The Recorder out is a "fixed" output so it will not work as a "preout" to control the volume of the subwoofer. High level input is better for intergration anyways if your subwoofer has that connection.

I find your opinion of the built in DAC in the PMA1600NE a little puzzling, I have this unit, a UK edition, and I find the DAC very reasonable, not thin and piercing as you describe but full rich very sweet and quite airy. I've had a few amps with built in DAC's including Audiolab 6000 (Sabre ES9018) and Cambridge CX60 (Wolfson WM8740) the Wolfson in the Cambridge is a little more neutral and open sounding compared with the Denon but less smooth and less full, I found the Audiolab's implementation of the Sabre DAC nothing special and actually inferior to the Denon.
