thanks for the detailed review. A note about multiple triggers - The Denon 4800h can independently turn on seperate amplifiers based on input. For inputs used for music, I only trigger my front stage amplifier. For video inputs I trigger all amplifiers. This is useful if you care about wasting energy and leaving your unused amplifier running. This cannot be achieved by a splitter.

I have an x4800h ordered but after watching a few reviews and this I’m going to get the x3800h instead. I never listen at levels where ASR posted SINAD issues so I don’t see the value spending the extra $. Great review mate, loved the format of the video and good sound and no background music 10/10.

I wanted to share my experience with various receivers that I ordered and reviewed: Test System: KEF LS 50 Meta's, B&W STM 72 Series 2 Center Channel, REL 1205 Subwoofer, Bass Transducer 300 watts Marantz NR1711: Initially, I had high hopes for this receiver as Marantz is known for its premium sound quality. However, I was disappointed with the muddied vocals and underwhelming performance. The small form factor was a plus, but the overall feel seemed dated and cheap. Moreover, it lacked dialog enhancement features, which affected the movie-watching experience. As a result, I returned it the very next day. Onkyo TX-NR 6050: The Theatre-Dimensional mode provided decent sound, but other modes felt underpowered. The receiver's build quality felt cheap, and the lack of pre-outs and integrated power cable raised concerns about its overall performance. While it was good for the price, it didn't do justice to my speakers, so I decided to return it. Pioneer VSX-LX 305: I spent considerable time with this receiver, setting up DIRAC and tweaking settings. The sound was good, but it lacked clarity in movie dialogues without the dialog enhancement feature turned on. Despite its strong bass performance, the warmth in the voices somewhat diminished the clarity. Moreover, the absence of pre-outs was a drawback. Nevertheless, I was almost inclined to keep it, especially considering the excellent price and the inclusion of DIRAC Live for free. Denon AVR-X3800H: This receiver impressed me right from the moment I held it-it felt substantial and well-built compared to the others. The sound quality was exceptional, even without running the Audyssey setup. Music playback, like Cold Play's "Viva La Vida," felt as if I were at a concert. The menu interface also appeared more modern compared to the others, though it still had some outdated elements. Audyssey, while not on par with DIRAC in terms of phase matching, is still impressive. While I miss the warmth of the Onkyo, I appreciate the Denon's treble emphasis, making the vocals come alive. However, I did notice that the bass lacked the punch that I could achieve with DIRAC using Harmon Curves. I plan to use the Audyssey mobile app to play around with the curves. The presence of pre-outs, greater power output, and overall better build quality led me to choose the Denon over the other receivers. I hope my experience and reviews help you make an informed decision on which receiver to buy. Each one has its strengths and weaknesses, so it ultimately depends on your preferences and priorities. Good luck with your decision!

Thanks a lot for sharing this information, it is very useful! I have been playing with the Audyssey PC app and now that you can import curves, it is REALLY getting interesting vs Dirac. I am working a lot between the two before I make a video so that it hopefully offers some valuable information for viewers :)

@@gabrieltechreviews8185great I used the phone app for audessey but while the curves match I think it’s the phase matching where Dirac excels. On a separate note I am not happy with either Pioneer/Onkyo or Denon it seems like both have their own problems. Pioneer/Onkyo sound warm but at the expense of details. My speakers sound easy to listen too with Pioneer/Onkyo but also feel more dead and less vibrant. The Denon on the other hand makes my speaker comes alive but vocals lack warmth and sound narrow/pointy. It has bass and treble but more like techno and is missing the mid bass. It has more features too for bass shakers, individual crossovers, pre outs, 4 subwoofers…. But listening to it gets fatigue if after a while. I wish Onkyo could provide both warmth/mid bass and clarity at top end like Denon. Now thinking of trying Onkyo Z50. Andrew in his review said LS 305 sounds exactly like Onkyo , but I am hoping he is wrong - which he often is!

I have also the X3800H , is a excellent receiver .For surround decoder I prefer Auro 3d over original Atmos signal , on AuRO 3D upmixer the bass is more alive and the sound stage is more precise in my opinion and own personal experience , and the reason here in America we feel Auro 3D is not presence in the market is because Dolby have a monopoly on this region , but this going to end in a near future , some big media companies are putting a lot of money in Auro 3d Technology which is way better than Dolby audio offer

Have you compared movies that have both auro and atmos like twister? I use Atmos for all Atmos native movies and auro3d to upmix non Atmos and both work great that way. Thanks for watching!

I have both, a Denon in living room (Kilpsch speakers) and an Onkyo in den (AR speakers). I find the Onkyo/AR combination gives a better sound stage, probably due to the smaller room. I find the exact opposite experience with calibration. Denon, if I use the calibration, I am constantly messing with the EQ, Onkyo I do not. Further, on the calibration system of both units, I use it to select speakers and set distance and sound level, not to EQ my system any more; I turn all that crap off after running the program when I connect different speakers or move them around. Of course I can do that manually on both units with a tape measure and sound level program. The room equalization on both units never sound good to my seasoned ears.

@AmmoDude
@AmmoDude 2 ай бұрын
@@jensdetmering7932 Um, that's a ridiculous statement (80%). Although room acoustics does play a smaller role. Quality of amplifier, speakers, placement and input quality play the major roles. I have many sets/manufacturer of speakers, 7 to be exact, ranging from JBL (3), Klipsch (1), AR (2) and Dana. I get different imaging in the same room with different speakers. In fact, my Dana 2F speakers with Seas tweeters give the best full sound stage. All this "difference" without changing room acoustics.

Great detail... however, I feel you are biased towards Denon due to multiple subwoofer and directional base managemen. Which is manageable with miniDSP 2X4HD.......onkyo providing lot of more than Denon since time when Denon not offering like All 8K HDMI, inbuilt Dirac, More power output, more control on remote button, Onkyo mobile app has great features, Great bluetooth connectivity than denon and more.......I have Denon x4700h, Marantz SR8015 and RZ50
@gabrieltechreviews8185
@gabrieltechreviews8185 Жыл бұрын
Hello. First thanks for watching and commenting. I actually do not even use the directional bass myself as I mentioned in the video but you cannot really do that with the MiniDSP and Onkyo so that is an intriguing feature that only the Denon can do vs the RZ50. I did also talk about the MiniDSP as an option for the Onkyo and multi subs but that still wont get me the clean LFE for my TR platforms which was one of the reasons I wanted to go with the Denon. I actually had the RZ50 longer than the 3800 and if you search AVSFORUM I was recommending it over the 3800 very often based on a few days testing the 3800 back when I got the Onkyo originally. But my needs have changed as well as the fact that Dirac is now a reality with the Denon not just an announcement as it was when I first tried it. Also, with the Denon you get the possibilities of Full bass control for Dirac and maybe even ART. None of those will be happening with the Onkyo. But I did mention and still mention that if you only need one sub output or dont mind using a MiniDSP for multi subs, the RZ50 is a great option still. Just need to also check on those claims of 4ohm speaker issues (I was using amps and my speakers are not 4 ohms so never had issues in that regard). Honestly I dont follow the rest of your message. The more power output well, the difference is minimal and if the 4ohms issues are true, that is some concern for some people. More control remote button? I have plenty of options with the Denon remote including 4 presets. Not sure what is better on the Onkyo remote aside that I liked the shape of the onkyo remote because the Denon feels like my Projector remote so I confuse them sometimes lol I have ZERO issues connecting with Bluetooth with the Denon and the app has many great features too. In fact, for music I prefer the HEOS app over the Onkyo one. I do like the Onkyo browser experience better than the Denon one. The Denon also allows you to set .6 atmos which you cannot do with the Onkyo or more options to manage the built in amps when doing a mix of internal and external amps. So they both have their pros and cons as with any piece of gear. For me, right now, the Denon is a better fit but of course, we are all different and is good to have options and find the one that works best for our needs :) Thanks again for commenting!!

@@gabrieltechreviews8185 just to add Denon lacks inbuilt Chromecast. I am one of the few that have KZfaq music and can’t stream to Denon with Google Home using Heos. I also feel Denon is brighter of the two, haven’t tried a Onkyo RZ50 yet, but compared to Pioneer LX 305, Senon is much brighter. It definitely is a different sound signature. I don’t know how good RZ 50 will sound but for me sound is more important then features. Can you cover sound quality a bit more.

@@michael-4k4000 I dont known if I can offer more help than my comments on the video. In some ways, the Onkyo is the better value since you dont have to buy Dirac BUT if you find a very good price on the 3800h, I like the extra subwoofer outputs and other things I mentioned. It depends on very specific needs and which prices you find for either. Also, if your speakers dig under 4ohms some people say the Onkyo may have issues.

@@michael-4k4000 Dirac is good to play with but it won’t make a bad receiver sound good. I tried Pioneer LX 305, Denon 3800H, Onkyo 6050 and Marantz SR 7015. Of all these, in pure features Denon is the best, but I found it harsh/bright compared to others in the list. The Marantz is what I have kept for now, but I don’t think it is my final choice. But of the four tested it was the most musical.

Thanks for taking the time to give an honest well-trialed video on the comparisons of each. I have the x1700H, and the sound is great, whether in 7.1 or 5.1.2. Denon makes great AVRs. They are well built and they have a tried and tested electronics base, which Onkyo can't match. I had an Onkyo RZ50, and I just ran into too many issues too many times. For value for money, RZ50 is probably the best, but for reliability and great all-round sound, Denons work well for me. If Onkyo can make better products where reliability is rock solid, Denon would be trouble for sure. Until then, I prefer the Denon all day long.

@@gabrieltechreviews8185 Hello Again. Here's the issue: I am only running a simple 5.1 setup with a new Denon X2800 - which pretty much functions like a 3800 - and the only source that's connected to the receiver is a Panasonic UHD Blu-ray player via HDMI. When we watch discs with 5.1 soundtracks, the Denon automatically engages either the Dolby Surround upmixer (for Dolby sources) or the DTS Neural:X upmixer (for DTS sources). Now, I could switch to the direct sound modes for those signals, such as Dolby Digital, Dolby TrueHD, DTS, DTS-HD, etc., but I leave them engaged so two channel soundtracks, whether mono or stereo, are automatically steered properly into the center and other appropriate channels. If I DON'T leave the upmixers on, I would have to press the green button on the remote every time I switch discs and need to use the upmixer for a stereo/2.0 channel track. Now, I'm concerned that the upmixers are doing something or changing something when I use them with regular 5.1 soundtracks - but I'm not sure because there's nothing to "upmix" when using a 5.1 channel system and listening to a 5.1 channel soundtrack. Do you see what I'm asking? Do these upmixers alter the sound of 5.1 tracks when engaged on a 5.1 system, or are they ignored because there are no speakers to "upmix" to? Also -- how does leaving the Speaker Virtualizer on in the setup menu affect the Dolby Surround/DTS Neutral X upmixers, if at all? I know this setting is for creating a pseudo Atmos effect with a 5.1 system, but does it directly affect the upmixers when engaged? We have in ceiling surround speakers (for normal 5.1 surround), so should I be using the Virtualizer at all?

I don't use zone 2 so not sure about that. I will check to see what I can find out I only use Auro3d for movies with Auro3d tracks or sometimes tor music. I don't usr it for Atmos because of what I explained in the video. I run 7.1.4 :) Thanks!!!

I have a 7.4.4 system today. 4 subs (actually 3 and 1 sofa kicker) and 4 Atmos ceiling speakers. Everything except for the kickers are from SVS. My "old" Anthem MRX 1120 was in an accident and has to be trashed. I wasn't ready to spend anything close to the current Anthem MRX 1140 so I started to look around. Apart from the receiver I have an external 3 channel power amp for the fronts and the center. So can you please confirm that the X3800H and the X4800H are able to give me a "full 7.4.4 experience" with the hardware I already have? Keep in mind I still want to use the 3 ch power amp for the front and the center speakers (large ones from SVS). Basically then I would need to be able to setup which channels to activate the built in amplifier in the Denons in. Is this possible?
@gabrieltechreviews8185
@gabrieltechreviews8185 2 ай бұрын
Yes you can set the 3channel amp for LCR and then assign the rest of internal amps to your other speakers. The flexibility of the 3800h is great in that regard. Also, since you have 3 subs and a kicker you can take advantage of making the 4th LFE channel a transducer output so if you like, for a clean signal to your shaker without any of the EQ applied to the subs. It should work great for you!

@@gabrieltechreviews8185 First of all, wow, that's a quick response!! Thanks a lot for putting time in responding. Also creds for your straight forward, authentic and very personal review and thoughts in your video. It is, without exaggerating, a very rare sight on KZfaq these days. Back to the topic... :) I've used Anthems "ARC" calibrating software which is very sophisticated and the setup itself is awesome with their PC Software. But I think the results have been pretty darn bad, atleast in my dedicated "cinema" room in the basement. With that said... 1) Do you think Audyssey will be able to calibrate down to the ~16hz that my SVS-SB16's are able to produce? Does it have the same functions as a dedicated external DSP has? Note: I've been using "Dspeaker" but have had issues with disturbances in those devices, and I cant recommend it. 2) Did you listen to the X3800H and X4800H back to back? No major difference in sound quality? I fully agree with you, I really dont want to spend that extra money if there is not very obvious advantage. They can say anything about their fancy signal processing etc, but it needs to be CLEARLY proven.

I bought Pioneer LSX 305 which has Dirac built in. Right now 3800h is on sale and I can return pioneer. Purely from sound qaility standpoint is it worth paying $300 more for the Denon?
@gabrieltechreviews8185
@gabrieltechreviews8185 Жыл бұрын
Well, from the perspective of only sound quality, I wouldn't expect anything noticeable, to be honest. I haven't played with thr Piooners though. Still for $300 I would love to have the extras like individually adjustable crossovers, 4 suboutput, etc. But if the features you have right now are working fine for you, then I would just save the $300 unless you have more than 2 Subs and no MiniDSP. Thanks for watching

@@gabrieltechreviews8185 I have 3 speakers and 1 sub and 1 bass transducer. I have the bass kicker attached to lFE out from the sub and it works pretty ok and I have a remote for it for volume adjust. The timing is a bit off. But nothing that bothers me. The thing is even though I spend $1500 on speakers KEF LS50 Meta and Bower and Wilkins Center Channel for $600, and $750 on reviver which is same as Onkyo 7100 and is essentially TX-RZ50 without pre outs. I am not wowed by the sound. It’s good but a $500 system can do similar quality, spending more then $2k I expect more. So was thinking would upgrading the AVR change the experience fundamentally?

I would say YES! I had the 305 and it was great but I then went with the Denon 3800 and it’s worth it. I paid way more so take advantage of the sales. I also purchased Dirac Live upgrade also so we are comparing apples to apples. I’m not a fan of Audyssey. Too much screwing around to get a result I’m not even all that excited about. Dirac Live just works much better to my ears and that’s specifically on the 3800 I’m referring to. The 3800 with preouts is ready to go to be paired with some external amplification which I think is a must upgrade to work towards if your receiver has preouts. With amplification it really improves dynamics and brings out a clarity I found lacking without amplification. I think the Denon 3800 is one of the best bangs for your buck now that it’s seeing significant discounts.

@@JonMoralesLA problem with Denon for me is that the sound is too bright. While it makes me hear instruments that I can’t hear with Pioneer 305, I still feel make voices lack mid bass and warmth to vocals. So for me it becomes fatigue listening to it. Now planning to buy Onkyo TX-Z50 to see if it fairs any better.

@ozguradam12 honestly that is an exaggeration from whoever is claiming that. Yes, klipsch is known to be on the bright side, specially older models but with audussey and adjusting your curves you can tame them if you feel they are too bright. If you wanted a "warmer" avr that would be a Marantz instead. I'm not a Klipsch fan myself, but I doubt you will have issues with the 3800 if you like the Klipsch sound to begin with

@libation14221 If you're talking about the X3800H vs the X4800H I don't think it's meant to be an apples to apples comparison. I think the question to be asked is "Is the Denon X4800H worth 60% more money than the X3800H?". I would love the X4800H (I'm upgrading from the X1600H bought new for $400 in 2020), but I'm not sure the X4800H brings enough to the table for $2.200 vs the $1.300 for the X3800H (these are the prices in Romania). If the X4800H would have had 13 processed channels, I would go with the X4800H, no doubt. Taking into account I'm thinking of using external amplification at some point, I guess the X4800H doesn't make sense for my use case. From what I read the benefit of the X4800H is that "each amplifier module is on a separate board and uses more components which are also higher quality" so the "new monolithic amplifier design in the X4800H can result in better dynamics and better separation (or lack of crosstalk) between the channels. It can ultimately lead to a cleaner sound in favor of the X4800H." Also the X4800H has a bit more power (125W vs 105W), but again, if you're thinking of using external amps, this doesn't matter. I'm sure there are other differences as well. I have to keep investigating before I buy in a month or two, but that's why I'm watching videos like this.
