In all honesty I think no one should really have any bad comments towards his videos,OF Course each to their own, but, personally, I have found them to be very helpful and to be a veterinarian to take time to make videos like this I think is pretty cool of him.

I totally appreciate your advice! We just tried the de-scaling on our standard poodle (10 years old) with huge success! All of the tartar came off (big chunks) and we only used that little dental tool to scrape it off. We were super reluctant to put him under anesthesia for a dental cleaning, so we are extremely thankful for your video. Our dog held still and was a good sport the whole time!

@@VeterinarySecrets Hi...Thank you so much for the education.... I just have a quick question... Are there scrapers sized especially for smaller dog's teeth or are they all basically the same? Also.... Where can I get that antiseptic? Or will it be also effective if I use a silver spray? I have sovereign silver.. would that okay to use?

I recently researched how to treat inflammation of gums for canines. Coconut oil, rubbed gently on gums 3 times a day. Well much to my suprise it only took one day, because I noticed a huge difference in the color and inflammation and her breath the very next day. Wow! Now I am using scaling tools and a polisher one tooth at a time. I also found that Manuka Honey has great bennifits for healty gums. I want to thank you for your videos, I wouldn't know how to go about doing these procedures if you han't taken the time to show people. Thank You!

I am so grateful for all your videos! I will definitely try the Monostat for my girl’s frito paws and her right ear. She has the prettiest white hair on her paws and it’s all discolored from licking due to the yeast infection. I have been using apple cider vinegar on her paws for months but the smell comes back and the discoloration has never gone away. My girl Bene’ has trouble every now and then with yeast in her right ear. Shes had medicine from her Veterenarian and it takes care of it but it might come back months later. I bought an ear rinse for dogs and it’s for fungus that I will use if needed. BUT I’m going to try the Monistat for both her ear and paws along with your concoction for her teeth and gums. Thank you so very much for taking your valuable time to make videos to help us dog parents at home. 🏆 ⭐️ ❤You’re the BEST! I will comment after several weeks to post our outcome..

Thank you. you are so kind to show us how to clean their teeth. My daughter found a small chihuahua someone dumped on the side of the road. She rescued her and I’m sure they threw her out cause her mouth was infected and some of the teeth were covered in tartar. We took her to the vet and now she is on antibiotics and the vet wants to clean the teeth next. This will help us in the future for sure. Thanks again.

My rescue who spent her entire first year in a crate in a rescue center did not want me to touch her mouth. I stared out using (Bright triple enzyme dog toothpaste) on my finger for many months to acclimate her to me being in her mouth. After 5-6 months of doing this, she now lets me use a gentle toothbrush on her teeth. This process along with chewing beef bones (she loved these) we have no teeth or gum issues at all. I am always into prevention whenever possible. I would also use CQ 10 if needed. Co Q 10 SAVED my gums!

Thank you so much for this!! My dog got a crappy, expensive cleaning at our last Veterinarian. I have been a "hooman" dental hygienist for 26yrs so I am very experienced. This is genius and no it doesn't hurt your dog unless they have teeth so bad they would need to be pulled. In that case you need to see a vet. I used a scaler for dogs, and it cleaned off the hard plaque and calculus. His teeth are super clean now. 👌

Thank you. I wish my veterinarian had showed me this. Obviously I know the ideal way is to bring your dog into the vet to get teeth cleaned, and I have. It cost me around $500. both times. Unfortunately, I am not always able to pay that amount ( please don't say if you can't afford to spend the money on your dog you shouldn't have him/her- there are multiple reasons that is wrong to think). Thus, my poor doggie has worse tartar than she should, but had I known what I could have done on my own her teeth would have been at least better than nothing. So, thank you, Doctor :)

Years ago I bought a pet scaling "kit". The main scaler looks more like a "hoe", which you gently put slightly above the gumline and "hook" onto the edge of the tartar and pull down, popping off the tartar. I find it works great on the dogs I've had, but cats are a bit more tricky! The kit also came with a hard plastic "bar" which rests between the teeth (on dogs, it's too big for cats) which keeps the mouth slightly open, making it a little easier to access those back teeth. I've never had to take a dog in for a dental, however, like I said, I find the cats harder to do and have had to do some dental work at the vet in the past. These days though, I can barely afford a plain vet visit, let alone any kind of treatment. 🙄

Louis looks like my dog, Hunter. Both Black Labs. I brush his teeth every day. I would brush twice, but once is pretty effective. Hunter is 16 now with great teeth that have absolutely zero gingivitis that so many dogs experience. He's had two pro cleanings before. He's also got a nice silver crown on the left canine tooth since he broke it when he was age 6 so, I found a dental vet to fix it. That was a root canal + crown. Scaling is easy if your dog is used to letting you brush teeth. Good way to avoid unnecessary anesthesia but, if the dog is not so cooperative, or the mouth is truly gunky, it's really necessary to get the pro cleaning done first then follow up with routine brushing + scaling if needed. If someone has a dog that is anesthesia sensitive, home cleaning is an option. It just takes time.

Fascinated to hear of DIY dental cleaning vs choosing between (my current) impotent neglect in lieu of anesthesia/profit scam only avoided from hearing honest assessments of the practice in animal rescue circles. Also, saw a comment on partial spay/vasectomy alternatives - it is the primary disturbing aspect of animal rescue/adoption with potential health fallout from anesthesia or kidney crystal victims. Please link if there is a video on this topic...may be another 'kept in the dark' pet topic.

How do you get the INSIDE surfaces, away from the cheek?

I think his video was good I ordered The tooth scaler‘s online. I have a small dog the vet said he has a little gingivitis. his gums are just a little red I had to hold my dog down because he didn’t like it LOL but I had them in a cup position and I was able to do one tooth I had the gauze and water ready. I will try to do one tooth a week not to stress the dog out! The cost of cleaning dogs teeth is ridiculous. And some don’t take payment plans The cost is between three and $700 but closer to 700 when you get there because they add on all this extra stuff just to make money, When are we want to do is care for pets the best we can. Thank you Dr. Jones!

Thank you very much for your advice. I just spent over two hundred on one dog for dental issues and just checked my other two dogs teeth. I really don't have any more money to take them into the vet. I will try this and see if it helps. One of the dogs has two teeth that look really bad. I watched one video too that said he used a fresh breath gel that helped to soften the target. Do you agree that this will help? Thank you very much. God Bless

Another great video- thanks for sharing. I was going to go to the vet but I am very hesitant since they have to put him under. He still has a baby tooth up against his canine. It looks a little brown around the tops of both of those. His gums are not very rad, maybe slightly so. Do you think this is something I could still go on my own? Like your dog, he is very patient and would allow me to do it.

Thanks for the instruction! I brush my dog's teeth nightly. He's 11, has great teeth. No more dental care under sedation, which isn't safe.

This is a great topic! Questions: The bones you mentioned, is it better cooked or raw? Whats your favorite hand scalers? Is there any way you could close up on the video? thank you!

Please tell us more about the scalars you are using. What are they called and where can we find them? The ones sold on Amazon are large and extremely sharp? What precautions should we take to avoid damaging the enamel?

Thank you so much. We were quoted 800 to 1200 dollars to get out older dog's teeth cleaned. We can't afford it so I'm going to spend some time desensitizing her to these tools.
