As a Man who came from that way of life ( not entirely but enough), this scene legit makes me tear up because that young man has two choices in life, take the chance at a better life, “domestic responsibilities” aside, or ruin the life he has further, that world is truly Death and suffering for money respect, and when the dead won’t let you sleep, everything is in hindsight suddenly. My mentor growing up gave me a similar speech, told me to make a choice “ Live as a Man or Die as a statistic”. Well stated! Thanks for taking the time to share. I think the scene also shows, to great effect, why he would choose to join the gang. They offer you a sense of family, protection in a dangerous world, instruction, exhilaration, sex, connection, food and shelter… and an early grave or prison. The toughest issue for me- many, if not most, people born into that socioeconomic nightmare don’t have the ability to rise above their situation, regardless of their desires. It really does come down to survival in many cases. Heck, many of the young adults are so traumatized by the time they’re even able to make these choices, that they literally can’t see any other path forward than through criminality. Trauma effects how you see yourself and how you see, or don’t see at all, your future. I’ve been on the side where I didn’t see one at all, and I should be dead a few times over at this point. The only reason I’m not is bx I won the genetic lottery in some respects.
