Part 13: • Deon Cole Doesn't Know...
Part 15: • Deon Cole Recalls Smok...
Part 1: • Deon Cole Responds to ...
--------
In this clip, Deon Cole weighed in on Ben Stiller saying he has no apologies for the film ‘Tropic Thunder’ which saw Robert Downey Jr. essentially perform in blackface. Deon explained from a pure comedic perspective that the sheer over-the-top nature of Downey Jr.’s performance didn’t come across as demeaning to black people. From there, Deon addressed the controversial meme he created to poke fun at the "slap heard around the world," involving Will Smith and Chris Rock. He expresses his regret because Chris Rock has been a mentor of his for years. He then shares some sound advice that Chris once gave him about being a comedian before he's anything else in life, which includes being Black, an American, a father, and so on. From there, DJ Vlad chimes in and states that what Will Smith did at the Oscar's was some "Punk Sh*t" because he never would have responded the same way if Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson cracked a similar joke on stage. Lastly, the two men turn their attention to Jada's "entanglement" with August Alsina before DJ Vlad shocks his Deon by informing him that August recently "came out of the closet."

First of all I'm a black man. And you are right that was the funniest line maybe ever in any comedy!😂 I love Robert Downey Junior's performance and I think he should have got an Oscar nomination for that performance. Furthermore I love that movie except for one thing. Why did they have to make the black guy the gay guy and why did it have to be any gay stuff in it period. Other than that I love that movie it was so funny. And just think Robert Downey Jr played a black guy, a Vietnamese guy, and an Australian guy! What a performance.

As a black woman, Tropic Thunder is one of my favorite movies. The movie was not about being black or making fun of blacks. It was about how crazy actors can be and the extremes they'll go to when method acting. The actors did a great job and I can watch the movie over and over.

Technically Tropic Thunder was making fun of how ridiculous it is when white folks portray black people. Outrageous stereotypes & just overdoing the accents & mannerisms in general. It didn’t perpetuate any negative stereotypes overall so I think that’s why it didn’t get too much backlash in the end.

They don't have to because A) that would be platforming and condoning it by giving it money B) the entire point was to make fun of self absorbed actors like a Leto or Carrey who abuse method as a way to see what they can get away with. As opposed to a Lewis who admits he stays in characters because he finds it the easiest. But he didn't halt production for half an hour during my left foot to be carried into the bathroom like Leto did on Morbious, or threatening the director that he would have to be giving a worse performance when asked if he could stop acting like a prick because Andy would have. Despite people who worked with Andy who are in the movie said he once pulled a prank by bringing escorts to taxi dressed as Tony Cliffton during a read through of a script. But would otherwise behave himself behind the scenes.

The whole point of tropic thunder was to use satire to showcase the ridiculousness of Hollywood and actors within. Rdj's whole character is based on stereotypes/tropes, which is why we have Brandon T. Jackson's character to point out, "wtf are you doing, you think that's how black people are? because it's not. I'm not black but Tropic Thunder was making fun of actors than making fun of being black or being mean-spirited at all. That movie still holds up which is very difficult for a comedy, much more for one that has blackface in it, and that's a big testament to how well it was written and ahead of its time. Tom Cruise is in a fat suit doing an obvious parody of Harvey Weinstein too.

Context and "intent" is everything - Tropic Thunder was taking the piss out the concept of black face, and was pretty much putting the "commentary" of it in a movie. It is NOT the same as, say casting Julia Roberts to play Harriet Tubman - which was a REAL SUGGESTION by a "REAL" Hollywood producer in the 90s

Great interview! I enjoyed Deon! Never saw him interviewed or serious. Great sense of humor and down to earth, I enjoyed this video. Lol exactly, it's more than an entanglement! 😂 So good of him to remove & apologize for the meme (I didn't see it). So many people have spoken on how good of a person Chris Rock is and always helpful. 😍

I love Tropic Thunder. It's all satire about the different Hollywood archetypes. RDJ was an immersive method actor who would forget who he was by the time filming, promo and the premiere wrapped, since he wouldn't break character until he "finishes the DVD commentary". Silly movie yet genius in its own way. I watch any time I see it on television. Good laughs from genuinely funny writers Edit: Also, I've never heard Vlad laugh that hard
