Depakote saved my life when I was having a seizure. Thank god for modern medicine

Thanks for this review. I just started my first dose today and knowing what to expect reduces my anxiety a LOT. I notice this is a 7 year old video so I hope you are still doing well.

I was on soduim Valoprate for over six years, came off it now. The medication made me eat alot drowsiness etc..... Weight gain. I've lost alot of weight. I had alot of side effects on this drugs. Poison Drug. I hated it, ruined my life. I would never take it again. I only take 1 tablet Amsulpride, one side effect tablet and my asthma inhalers. At night 1 in half tablet 300mg Amsulpride again, also one side effect tablet, and my inhalers that's all I take for my schizoaffective disorder. No side effects anymore and I have alot more energy because I lost weight and I hate Sodium Valoprate and all bipolar medications, tried them all, didn't work for me, it made me feel worse. Xxxxxx. My daughter was prescribed Depakote for seizures, when in fact it caused her to have seizures, weight gain, fatigue, and many female problems ending in a total hysterectomy. Then finally it killed her with pancreatitis...She was only 41, she had wanted to have children, and we were never warned that this medication could effect her pancreas...but now she is dead...PLEASE DO NOT TAKE DEPAKOTE, PLEASE...

In my experience Depakote works the best. I have had the least amount of side effects, and the ones I notice are managable (weight gain). I am an artist and was worried that without the mania and creativity I was going to have no reason t live. Although I do miss the mania sometimes, I am actually WAY more creative. My thoughts may not be as "advanced" or "philosophical" but I can manage my symptoms and actually focus on something long enough to create it.

I switched to Valproic from Lithium and I feel much better, been on it two weeks now and I’ve been stable and sleeping like a baby with no side effects. I guess everyone has different side effects and reactions.

I took the Depakote Sprinkles and I had no side effects AND I had no mood swings. I was switched to another brand of Depakote and the side effects have been horrible. I almost had a car accident on the expressway due to dizziness and fatigue. I have chills. My throat is always dry. My chest feels congested. Feels like I can't breathe. etc. Im trying to get back on the Depakote Sprinkles because they worked well for me. I do not recommend anyone take Depakote if it is not the Sprinkles brand.

I take 250 mg at night. it's been a week now and my racing thoughts or imbalanced feelings feel more in control. i take Adderall during the day. it's the perfect combo. from what I've read seems I'm taking a low dose of depakote but it's really worked well.

My partner is BP1. Was unmedicated and stable for 7 years till this past winter he lost control and went thru a manic episode. Was prescribed respirdone and it eventually helped him come out of the manic. Well he crashed and now dealing with a depression episode. He’s in the hospital right now as he’s very emotional and depressed. It’s been 2 days of taking depakote and I hope this works to help him.

Just work out I do and haven't gained weight. As far as the liver medication my Dr said it's rare for it to mess up your liver. I've been on it a year so for so good.

Yeah.. about 2 weeks.. more like 2 months and sleeping 10-18 hours a day . Waking up drained asf ,by the time you actually wake up itll be time to sleep.. so then take another dose and try to sleep doesn't always workout.. then you stay up for a day.. and then another one and if you dont sleep you dont take your medication ? Am I doing it wrong ?.. fml

Hi Jeffrey, Thanks for this video. I had taken Sodium Valporate when I was 12 years old and continued it for 3 years along with carbamezapine. I am now in my mid thirties and I think this might have sort of given me a long term anxiety, GI effects etc. Maybe something to do with how it regulates hormones? I saw some papers where it mentioned this acts as an Aromatase inhibitor and an androgen antagonist which means it could pretty much wreck all hormones. Also, this increases GABA is what I have heard. Maybe post withdrawal the brain cannot produce GABA and serotonin without the simulation of valporic acid at least in the required levels. Your thoughts on this? I have been trying to get to the root cause of issues and any help would be appreciated.

It’s also used for EPILEPSY. I have been on a dosage of 3000mg a day for over a decade. Still have my liver but yes tremors. Thank Jesus for Apples sensitivities and responsive keyboards on the iPhones 👍👍

I agree with a lot of your symptoms. I have bipolar mania and intermediate rage disorder. I’ve been on the Depakote for about a month I have been less violent and I come down a lot quicker but I still have issues with becoming irritated fairly quickly so she upped me to 375 mg 3 times a day. I take topamax with the depakote as well because with rage disorder I do get headaches. I do feel sleepy all the time too and I have gained weight just 2-3 pound here and there but the topamax is suppose to help me loose weight so I’m okay with it. I’m naturally skinny anyway. I start cognitive behavioral therapy next month so fingers crossed 🤞🏻 I hope your doing well now and you found happiness in your life. 🙏

I took depakote for several years for bipolar, which it controlled, but at a very high price. I was always exhausted and drowsy, I slept so much. Over the years I put on a ridiculous amount of weight, and no, I was not overeating. My remembrance of my years on depakote is certainly there, but lost in a thick fog of vagueness. In a group therapy, a young lady was.prescribed depakote. In two months, she put on.so much weight that outside of therapy, she would not go out, and she refused to see her friends. My.dude effects never disappeared. This medication was a.disaster for me, please try and stay away from it

Third day of taking 250 mg, bumping my dosage up to 500 mg after the first week. This is the first medication I have ever been on but have dealt with some of the side affects described in your video due to prior mental issues. I am specifically taking this medication for petite-mal seizures, migraines, and anxiety.

I am Bipolar, take Depakote twice daily. Only drawback, shaking hand, real bad shakes just in one hand, bloody annoying!

My son had the severe adverse side effects. He got agressive and extreme agitación. Hitting walls. You could see the change inmediately after he took it. He doesn't take it at all anymore. It is on his Medical records to not give it to him.

I took depakote it made my brain swell up it made the show up and have diarrhea and afterwards I flushed them down the toilet, doctors made me take it again until 2019 after I stopped taking them I started to get moodswings from the depakote. After they went away I started getting a sticky itching and burning feeling in my brain and when ever I try to take my sleeping meds they won't desolve in my brain because of the depakote. It made me stop enjoying music like the music does not sound good after I took the depakote. I think it's my limbic system the depakote defected I feel like I have a brain infection after taking it I think the side of my brain has no connection what so ever. Do not ever take depakote it will mess you up really bad. I also had thoughts of suicide after taking the medication I still do a little bit because my brain is messed up.

I was about to take my perscribed dose until you said it causes liver damage. I already drink. So, I don't need anything else causing my liver to go bad. I may try it once I am supposed to take 125mg twice a day. I already take seroquel or the generic version. 😐

I gained 75 pounds and became diabetic, got a fatty liver, and metabolic syndrome. I started at 130# and went to 205. I was never given blood tests

After I had a stroke I was given valproic acid I had a negative reaction to the drug it attacked my pancreas and it gave me severe pancreatitis that I'm still suffering with today

It looks like people are drastically one way or the other with this medication. I just started it yesterday, I am on 1000 mg daily for seizures. What really scares me is that I have an eating disorder and if I gain weight I know I won’t stick with it. Is it just an increase in appetite or does it do something to your metabolism? I’m giving it a shot but if anyone has any suggestions or advice, I would be SO thankful.

Thanks for the review, i just started it last night. I used to use seroquel but it was def way too sedating to hold a job or school work, and for me at least the whole point was to be productive and not a vegetable. Have you tried Lamotrigine? If so how was that?

I took this medication in the 1990's and It did not work for me. I am taking now Geodon , Citalopram, and Vraylar for my bipolar disorder and they work for me, but I worry about my weight. I am in my first week and I was prescribed because I was in a mixed episode, went from sleeping 2-3hours a night to 6-8 but If I do not sleep I feel dead...which I am not used to but I guess it is good for my body to rest...I gained 80lbs on seroquel and have lost 35 but am worried I will gain weight again but I cannot manage my anger, frustration, or overactive brain...I am very active now and I do not eat processed sugar or wheat...but I always eat large portions so I guess I will try to eat over half my diet of vegetables and that will help? Here's hoping, just with fibromyalgia the extra weight makes my chronic pain worse...I am female but still appreciate the review after one week I already notice a difference...I do miss the mania a bit

On depakote for 2nd time 6 months in on 1750 mg for bi polar weight gain sucks kinda wanna get off but it does help idk its scary to try and not be on meds God help me

Im a female. I use it for both seizures and depression and anxiety. Number one side effect thats drivi g me crazy is the tremors. I get dry mouth, sleeping alot. It works for my seizure disorder and Im afraid to try somthing new. But as a cashier at a wholesale warehouse I cant handle the shaky hands. Everyone notices. they tell me to relax. "Are you OK?" Everyday. Sooo annoying.

I was not euphoric or creative AT ALL for 2 years. I also have a seizure condition. I was on Keppra, then got an anxiety and was on a bunch of other stuff. Went on then off Depakote and was confused about which was helping which condition. Anyway, the quick report is that I'm using a calendar and my gut feeling as to when to take the med. My dr is going to have a meltdown if I tell him, but I'm also trying Charoletes Web. I've been on Depakote for about 10 days now, and it feels like my life has change 100% for the better. I'm out of bet, normal, functional, creative, productive, but not manic. The one big problem is aches and tingling in my hands - very bad actually. I also had a highly complex dream this afternoon that was mostly a nightmare. It involved vivid images, levels, dimensions and seemed very hard to wake up from.

I was prescribed this for anxiety. It fucked with me so badly. I was out of it all day. I'd hallucinate when trying to sleep. I'd get stuck in this lucid state of being awake mentally but my body would be asleep. Would not recommend.

Depakote is also used to treat epilepsy

I'm on 1000mg Depakote and my brain feels like mush! I swear, I feel so stupid on this drug! I can talk fine online, but I'm very quiet around people in person, even around friends and family! And my emotions are so flat! Well, my boyfriend gets me to smile, but in general I don't laugh or cry and I'm usually pretty bored with life. I'm going to talk to my doctor about lowering my dose because I definitely think I'm overmedicated. Also, my 18 year old son is on 500mg and he is doing great on it. He's very social and happy and has good relationships with his girlfriend, friends, and family. I'm also on 15mg Abilify, so that could be affecting my brain in a negative way, as well.

I've been taking it for awhile. You get used it. Your body adapts and becomes tolerant. Exercise helps enormously, but cannot cure the hair loss. I keep my haircut short like Jason Statham. It conceals the balding.

how long do you have to be taking depakote for before they sent you for blood work and what is the blood work checking on you said liver do you reach a certain level of depakote in your system is what there cheking for and how long does it take to reach that level if your on 1500 mg a day thanks

I have bipolar and anxiety which leads me to manic episodes pretty much not wanting to live or wanting to hurt people around me. I heard you say you take it at night. is there a reason you take it at night or does any time matter? I'll be starting this medication tonight or tomorrow morning.

Have been on 1000mg nightly since 1994.it is supposed to help you sleep so dont complain. It is the lack of sleep that gets you in trouble. you must find your driven self in life. Even taking thus I only sleep 5 hours. Excercse will be your friend. Lst year at 71 I excercised 700 minutes per month most days included 1 hour hard mountain biking. learn to love it, it will be your friend.

The doctors administered Depakote to my Dad for mood / Manic episodes, he has Alzheimer's and was having bad irritable / anger mood issues. He is 82 years senior. He also takes Desyrel . I'm wondering is there anyone who's family members has Alzheimers and loved ones have been administered Depakote?

Has anyone experienced excessive watery mouth while taking Depakote? I took it for a year and it worked as it should but I noticed I was spitting a lot while talking which actually caused anxiety when taking with people. I got off it for a 8 months and started back up last week and noticed my mouth was watering again. Not sure if it's psychosomatic or actually causing my saliva glands to produce more. I did read that some anticonvulsants can cause watery mouth. Any feedback would be great!

I had Google this, the long list of side effects are scary...but most psych meds I see advertised on tv also have long list of side effects...are you still taking Depakote, and how are you responding to this med, side effects.

Update: I commented on this video two months ago and now I'm back because boyyyy are these side effects killing me. Especially how SLEEPY i get. Im an architecture student and it's gotten so damn hard keeping up with school to thw point where I don't know if I'll pass all my classes. I used to be a great student :-( Now I struggle to stay awake and stay focused. My brain is so muddy. I also just recently started taking Zoloft. Is there anything I can do to combat those side effects? I just want to get my degree and get the hell out of there :-(

The reason I came here is mainly due to Nausia. I will mention it to my Dr but I will also keep in mind what you said about giving it a month.

hated this med!!!!! ruined my life for 10 years fatigue, huge weight gain, altered liver function lowered metabolism was used to treat seizures did nothing at all for it!! nothing and i was seen by a top doctor at a well named hospital it just shows you how messed up healthcare is in the US was misdiagnosed turned out to be high blood pressure!!!!! good god

I simply can't initiate sleep and if I do I wake up 2 hours later full of energy. I could take seroquel but it gives me spinning nightmares and dont sleep enough, I enjoy the way zyprexa calms me down but the weight gain is almost instant and it's hard to walk straight in the morning. I worry about losing my kidneys or liver because then I won't be able to metabolize medication. I wish I knew the healthiest option for my insomnia.

That is a very low dose you take of Depakote ER for bipolar. Are you taking anything else? Are you bipolar 1 or 2, hypomania or full mania?

3 years using this depakote 500 er , and goes 5 years without epilepsy(3 years drug+2 years without drug) but on 2022 i got seizure epilepsy again , im going to use the drug again
