Liam Neeson and Freida Pinto present the Oscar® for Foreign Language Film to Japan for "Departures" at the 81st Academy Awards in 2009. Accepted by director Yojiro Takita; accompanied on stage by producer Yasuhiro Mase, actors Masahiro Motoki and Ryoko Hirosue, and translator. Hosted by Hugh Jackman.

I saw this film at Ebertfest in I think 2014. The director was there and said it was a genre known as “wet” films because they made you cry so much! I’ve never heard an audience sob with such joy and love for humanity. An amazing experience and a unique movie.

Same, I saw it today for a japanses film class and it took me 30 minutes to calm down from crying lol one of the only films I've seen that had such an impact.

I talk about this movie often, but it's the only movie I cried pretty much the entire time, only to absolutely be filled with joy at the last. A work of mastery.

Incredibly well-deserved. Departures is a stroke of cinematic wonder, bursting with soul and exhibiting every aspect of cinematic brilliance. Its message is timeless and its execution immaculate. A work of art in every sense of the word.

Japan had a few Oscars even ones that aren’t Best Foreign Language film like Miyoshi Umeki for Best Supportive Actress in Sayonara and Spirited Away for Best Animated Feature. And now Drive My Car. Maybe soon a documentary in Japanese will win an Oscar for Best Documentary Feature. Possibly one about Japan Ad Council

A academia, principalmente o departamento de melhor filme internacional, adora fazer surpresas entre os seus indicados ao Oscar em tal categoria! Se em 2008, o austríaco "Os Falsários" surpreendeu ao ganhar o Oscar de Melhor Filme Internacional , concorrendo com outros 4 filmes totalmente excelentes, porém quase desconhecidos do grande Público, no Oscar 2009 , tivemos um diferencial: o merecido vencedor, foi o excelente "A Partida", que concorreu com o francês "Entre os muros da escola", palma de ouro no festival de Cannes de 2008, o surpreende filme Alemão "O Grupo Baader Meinhof" , que foi o filme "lavador de alma" para os alemães, no ano de seu lançamento; o favorito da crítica, que era o israelense "Valsa com Bashir" e ... A "zebra mais listrada" dentre os indicados ao Oscar de Melhor Filme Internacional nos últimos anos anteriores ao Oscar 2009 , que foi o filme "Revanche", um drama austríaco sobre infidelidade e redenção. Um tema batido no cinema, mais em "Revanche", tal tema ganha contornos impressionantes, totalmente estilizado, num exercício de estilo edificante que, foi merecidamente reconhecido pelo Oscar 2009, que colocou "Revanche" entre os concorrentes ao Oscar de Melhor Filme Internacional, representando a Áustria. Sim, juntamente com os outros 3 filmes concorrentes, "perderam com Justiça", pelo menos na minha opinião, para o filme japonês "A Partida"... No entanto, nada tira o brilho do excelente filme "Revanche" que, caso não fosse indicado inesperadamente ao Oscar de Melhor Filme Internacional em 2009, dificilmente, tal filme chegaria ao conhecimento do Público brasileiro, para apreciação. DEPARTURES is the second best film ever made, my first being A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS. It is a relatively recent film since all of my other top ten films are much older. It is an extraordinary film going experience that I cannot begin to recommend more highly. www.ethansfilmreviews.com

I watched this Oscars and everyone was predicting Waltz with Bashir until the envelope was opened. It was a surprise win and you can hear the gasp and yell from the audience.
