Well, Vince has never liked touring, and still doesn't. Andy Bell, the other half of Erasure, has kind of had to prod and drag him into it every time. Vince tried to be the guy in the background who worked with many singers, but that didn't work out logistically (couldn't find enough available and willing singers that he liked), so he had to become a band member and tour again so that he wouldn't go back to being poor!

And he was doing nearly all of the work while the others were mostly telling him that his new songs were rubbish and he needed to write them differently--how they liked their music to be, which was probably different between the three of them anyway. 🙄😄 Together with feeling overwhelmed at the time, Vince wanted out. He only went back to doing the same things, albeit with fewer people involved, which was an improvement for him, because it turned out to be his only path out of poverty.

@@rbrtckI think he said he was a control freak as well.

@@peternagy-im4be That is true, although it is something many people admit to being, especially artists. Martin was a control freak, too, in his own way, and so was Alan. However, I really don't think Vince would have minded if Martin had been willing to write more of the songs and actually worked hard at it. It was Martin and the others telling Vince how to write his songs that I think bugged Vince so much. Imagine anyone who does almost no work telling another who does nearly all of the work how to do it. Most people wouldn't appreciate that, or tolerate it, even those who aren't control freaks, but especially those who are. Now, Vince has worked very well with Andy Bell as a songwriting partner for nearly 40 years now (as Erasure, of course), so control freak or not, it's not as though he wanted to do everything. They work together on some things, divide the remaining work the way they both like, stay out of each other's way, and listen when the other says they don't like something (but do not tell the other how to do it, just to try something else). If Martin had been willing to work with Vince in that manner, then Vince *might* have been happy in Depeche Mode. Well, possibly. Who knows? Surprisingly, Martin and Vince did collaborate as VCMG about 10 years ago, and it worked out quite well. Vince still says that he's a control freak, but he has collaborated successfully with multiple artists, including Jean-Michel Jarre and Paul Hartnoll, in addition to Andy (Bell) and, belatedly, Martin, nonetheless. It was actually Martin who was absolutely against direct collaboration for many, many years. But VCMG worked out because they both contributed equally. This wasn't the case back when Vince was still in Depeche Mode. Vince was the servant who served three masters who had a lot of opinions and not a lot of work ethic (at the time). Well, Dave worked and contributed in his ways, but Martin only wrote a couple of songs, which was well below his potential, and Fletch (RIP) had no musical talent.

@@robertisham5279 Wilder was the sound guy (well, along with Miller, Flood and others who created DM), Clarke a songwriter. Different roles they played, you shouldn't compare them like that really.
