My late husband was a big Depeche Mode fan and I still treasure the vinyls he left behind . I still see him over 30 years ago dancing to this song in his baby blue sweater his grandmother made him, his cheeky grin and his messy hair. Life changed so much, but music takes us back to some very dear places and memories. 🥰

Also I love Depeche Mode and Dave a lot, but his voice wasn’t his strongest in this performance. I saw them live ones, so I know he must have had just “a moment “ 😜. I know, I’m spoiled when it come to live performances 😇

This track was released in 87 & has forever since been a live favourite. They had their first hit in 81 but are still making great new music today & have had nearly 50 hits in the UK. You really need to see them live & enjoy the live experience. They have a huge fanbase who know all the words to all their songs so by the time of this concert they all sing along & show how brilliant the band are.

I don't believe this song is about Herion since this song came out in 87 and Dave's drug problem was in the early -mid 90's. I believe it is about a relationship being in love and never wanting it to end. Barrel Of A Gun by DM i believe is about Herion since it was recorded during Dave's dark days also Martin was going through his drinking problems. It was also the album that almost didn't happen because all the internal problems

I just love how DM has been doing this with this song for YEARS. It's become a routine. So.. when you are at a concert there is this anticipation and when this song hits, it's feeling part of a big whole who all love DM. And that is coming from an individual who hates groups. BUT.. when in the right crowd, with the right people.. I am more willing to let go of the 'errr this is weird'. I was at the concert in Antwerp in May, very first concert ever that I went to (remember I hate groups), and when that song hit I knew what would happen, I had seen it on KZfaq... I started swinging my arms thinking "oh shit my armflabs... .... girl NOBODY cares about your armflabs". *snort and then I just enjoyed that feeling of "we all love this, we all wanna do this, this is fun!" It's one of the best parts of their concert, to be honest. :)

The first big concert that I went to was in Copenhagen, 1990. Depeche Mode, on their "Violation tour". I was in my teens and my parents barely let me go on that show. I live in southern Sweden and it was 1,5-2 hour drive to Copenhagen (no bridge back then). Me and my friend got together with a bunch of fans from our home town and got there in a rental bus... It was a blast!! This band was huge at the time.

I wish I had done something like that back then to see them live! I live in central Arkansas, and unless the tour came to Little Rock, I wasn’t going. I didn’t have the type of parents who were going to drive me three hours to Memphis or 5+ hours to Dallas for a concert. Then after I turned 18 in 1993 it seemed like every time I’ve been on tour there’s been something that’s kept me from being able to go make a trip to Dallas, The nearest they come. Until finally at the beginning of April I saw them in San Antonio which is a 9 hour drive, but I’m so freaking glad I did! Holy crap they were every bit as awesome as ever!

DM has sold over 100 million records. Most of any synt-pop band in history. They are pioneers of this sound, along with Kraftwerk & The Cure. DM songs have been covered more than any other band. They are absolute legends - now in the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame. Their tour after Songs of Faith & Devotion beat Michael Jackson's Thriller tour & became the highest grossing tour off all time at that time. One of their most underrated songs is one you should totally react to. The song "HALO." Incredible song. But was over-shawdowed because it was on Violator with the singles - "World in My Eyes," - "Personal Jesus," - "Enjoy the Silence," (which was the #1 song in America in 1993 & "Policy of Truth." - The song HALO is a hidden gem!

I've been a fan for 43 years and every time I see them in concert I turn around in the stadium and look at the crowd waving their arms. It's a thing of being. I'm thinking this is where the wave began during a concert setting. I suggest, Stripped from the Devotional tour or the music video, Shake the Disease, Wrong, World in My Eyes.

Yes, you are right. If you have a repetition in music, the music starts to cirkulate around you in the hall - especcialy if the hall is round. It works as a tibetan bowle. Linkián Parku used to do the same in their song. And U2 or Muse and some other bands. Only 30 seconds to Mars bring real tibetan bowle to use it. It was so powerfull that I wanted to back through to back wall to escape it. That´s why Depeche Mode wrote the song Black Celebration because their concert is just like a mass in church of music. For Depeche Mode concert is good to go somewhere upside just to watch and enjoy the participation of audience.

i’ve certainly heavily commented on your initial song reaction from the album, but i have 2 comment notes in my brain: 1st, i’ve never heard/seen this version/performance (thank you) & i realized it really emphasized my 1 point: David’s singing was recorded as “practically almost” monotone - varying between 3 half steps(tones) delivering an incredible “almost-monotone” lyrical delivery.. well, damn! this live performance shows his extreme effort to deliver his vocals in almost consistently the same note (giving a deviation of a half note down) in his lyrical delivery throughout - impressive!! 2nd: the idea of group think (vs group motion, in my opinion): it reminds me of the 1988 (song copyright) parallel/connectivity precursor to the early 90s raves: groups of people subtly getting into a groove, a rhythm, to dance together in a interconnected way which acted like a feedback loop - certainly helping the rave/trance explorations in music that spanned from 5-20 minutes “movements” to which created a crowd seemingly in sync movement-wise in an uninhibited space which created a “communal flow”.. hence the art of DJ mixing became essential in not interrupting that group movement from 1 song/artist into another w/o interruption in the group flow… ahhh, those were the days that even i, as an isolationist, suddenly lost my inhibition (innate desire to avoid social interaction) to suddenly be sonically hearing, interpreting, & expressing through reactive movements along w/fellow strangers in a positive musical input/output reactive release… the good ol days! thanks for the revisitation!

Depeche Mode were not nearly as good in the 2000s (live) as they were in the early 90s. I would recommend the studio version or Depeche Mode 101 if the main purpose is to listen to the song, this is great crown interaction, but from a vocal point of view, this rendition is not nearly as good as when it was performed a decade earlier.
