I might be alone here, but I think this is the best song of the album. It's mysterious, and I just love the synth elements. Gore and Clarke must have known they were onto something. It's cool that Clarke was sporting a light beard in 1981....an era that clean shaven was the look.
@stevenwright83882 жыл бұрын
You are not alone! I've never been a fan of early DM but this was "head and shoulders" above all on this album. Funnily enough, I'm just looking at my DM collection from 1980- to 1993; I only collected 12"s but counted 210 so far (marbeled, limited et.al.... .)

Hmmm, were you even around in the 80's?.. Vince Clark was only inspired to get into electronic music after hearing OMD.. I only just discovered that and it makes perfect sense as I couldn't help but notice the similarity between the "Bright light/Dark room" in this and OMD's 'Red Frame/White Light'.. The early 80's was full of synth hits and DM were only a part of that - New Order's anthem 'Blue Monday' was the biggest synth hit of the day by far..
@Acoustic-Rabbit-Hole2 жыл бұрын
Depeche Mode went far with synths, and while everybody has different tastes, it was only Vince Clark, even from this early album, who created almost every sound from scratch using analog synthesis. All patches, wires and cables. Which he still uses with Erasure. He is highly respected in the recording industry (in general), and he technically might actually be The King Synthesizers. (Maybe D-Mode takes second!).
@synthesizerrevolution5525 Жыл бұрын
Depeche Mode were actually more into samplers, and less into synths, they sampled sounds from anything and everything, and played them on the keyboard. They used a sampler called "Emulator Emax" and others. The sampling of natural sounds is called "Musique Concrete". This is really what made the DM sound so distinctive from other New Wave bands. The synths came later, but samplers were really their sound source.

There will never be a period of excellence like the 80s for DM. Photographic belongs to the Pantheon of Synthpop's eternal beauty. What a brilliant beginning for Depeche Mode. The innocence, the atmospheres, the energy, the exquisite timbres make not only this piece, but Speak & Spell entirely one of the best Synthpop LPs of all time. Special praise goes to Photographic itself, as well as Tora! Tora! Tora!, Big Muff, and of course the emotive Ice Machine. If you only know Just Can't Get Enough, go have a serious listen to this long play, for Speak & Spell will leave you floating among the clouds.

After this album Vince Clark left Depeche Mode. He wrote all the songs. The magazines were saying Depeche Mode was finished. Then Martin Gore stepped up and began writing the songs. The rest is history.
@orgonkothewildlyuntamed63018 жыл бұрын
+terry2315 yes Vince formed Erasure & Yaz one of the rare cases when the person leaving & the band he left both got better afterwards(Genesis another example)
@rbrtck7 жыл бұрын
+terry2315 Martin actually wrote two songs, "Tora! Tora! Tora!" and "Big Muff", but Vince did write the rest and all of the hits back then. I don't blame the magazines for assuming that DM were doomed because aside from Dave singing (but not writing) the songs, the rest of the band didn't do much creative work--it was (almost) all Vince and Dave at the time. These two were also the promoters who sought deals with record labels and such--Martin and Fletch didn't take the band 100% seriously early on since they both had decent day jobs. One possible reason that Vince left was that Martin, whom Vince really wanted in the band, was always "shy" about writing songs and even shier about collaborating on them. Since Vince did most of the work anyway, he thought he might as well work with a variety of singers anyway, and as a "power" producer he wouldn't have to go on tour and things like that (didn't enjoy that or performing live). He still planned to write songs for DM, too, if they'd have this, but his leaving and all of the negative press about DM's future lit a fire under the band, especially Martin who obviously decided to start cranking out songs. He's still shy about collaborating, though--he has never collaborated on songs within DM (he writes alone and Dave collaborates with others), and only in the last few years has he started to collaborate with Vince (of all people) as VCMG. Vince, on the other hand, prefers to collaborate, so for this and other reasons he wasn't a good fit for DM. He also left Yazoo since they wrote separately and couldn't stand each other personally, but has stuck with Erasure for decades because he and Andy Bell collaborate closely and get along well.
@rbrtck7 жыл бұрын
+orgonko the wildly untamed There was just so much talent to start with and they were just getting started, which is why things turned out this way, and yes it is rare, especially since talent unfortunately doesn't always translate into success (if we're counting the latter at all). Additionally, I think that Vince leaving DM really gave Martin the motivation and ironically the confidence that he had been lacking previously.

I heard this song when I was about 11 but never knew it was dm. I would wait ready to press record on my tape deck on KROQ radio station back in Southern California...those were my happy and innocent days!

The darkest, spookiest song on Speak and Spell and the most mysterious Depeche Mode track ever recorded.

Pepe Gomez It's a matter of taste, for me this pure electronic era of DM is the best.

AORCrazy Pepe Gomez Well, guess what, I agree with you two. However this song is genuinelly naïf, just like early techno used to be. For more complex, ellaborated and professional DM techno you need to start at Violator. And yes, Walking in my shoes is just a master piece, as this one is (+ice machine in this same album and many others)

Santiago i respect your opinion but i must disagree, for me it's not naive and i don't believe that music just because it's made with more complex machinery and newer is better, i like that older sound, 'techno' i don't even want to comment, it's enough you call Violator which is pure electro/synth album a 'techno' music.

AOR, I read many things about tags and definitions, etc. I decided they were all a bit arbitrary when I read Prodigy was breakbeat and Björk lolly pop. (I promise I read that, I am not inventing it!) Now, this said, yes, Violator is electro/synth, I think so too. But I have two doubts: who decides these terms and definitions and whether it is ok to use them on a wide audience (say a group of god knows who that comment a video). Anyway, to the point: it is all a matter of opinions, but this song could be played with a limited number of basic instruments and uses a very limited number of musical notes. Evolution is also there for music and if I think this is naive is because of its simplicity and how far it is from, say, "Wrong" (from DM too). This song is simply early techno. No evolution. A bit uneducated. Simple and naive. It is to me and I respect if it is not so to you, no probs.

AORCrazy this is by FAR the best album in my opinion - and this track, the best track. Best lyrics anyhow by far IMO. i'm confused about something though- I looked up the lyrics for this song and the song was written by someone named Melanie and Sapka or something (?) Anyone know who that is?

I remember the first time i heard this song. It was 1987 I was in the the 7th grade a relatively new fan of DM at the time. I had this mail order catalog you know the ones that sold all the cool band t-shirts and posters the only place you could buy stuff like that if you didn't live in a big city. I forgot the name of the store they were based out of LA or NY, but they had a cassette of a live depeche mode concert and i ordered it. I waited anxiously at least a couple of weeks before i received that cassette. What i received didn't look like a legit cassette instead it was a bootleg recording on a maxell cassette and it had a very poorly xeroxed picture of depeche mode on yellow paper for the cassette sleeve. I remember i kinda felt like i got screwed but when i played the tape i was not disappointed, On that tape was photographic I instantly fell in love with this song and haven't stopped listening to it since.

I am 44, listen to them since I am 6 years old. My older brother- fortuned me- brought DM so early in my life. Back then I had no clue how much they would have a meaning in my life. I sure will listen to them till the last day of my life. When I look at both numbers- 6 when I listened first time and now I am 44...it brings two thoughts into my mind: First: Oh my god, I got old. How did this time fly by so fast? And second: Oh my god, DM are legends since so many years....Its crazy. Bands in the time of now dont really stay long, they come and go. I love the 80´s, because it brought up legends. I loved every concert I have seen DM in so much. It was magic every single time. Thank you DM. Greetings from Germany to every one of you.
